Brussels Accessible Art Fair: A wide range of works of art on displayThe Brussels Accessible Art Fair will be back at the Conrad Brussels Hotel’s Ballroom from 21 to 23 September, displaying the work of over 50 international emerging and established artists. A personal art shopper service and a young talent contest are two key features of the Fair, which has been run since 2007.

The aim of the event is to bring together artists and art lovers face to face. This personal contact gives the art buyer the opportunity to gain more insight into the work that he or she is buying.

“The Brussels Accessible Art Fair attracts first time buyers as well as art collectors in an accessible and casual setting. We try to make the luxury of buying original works of art more accessible,” says an official press release.

The Brussels Accessible Art Fair team will also be present to offer their highly personalised art consultancy service called Personal Art Shop-per. Through this service, visitors who need to see the works of art in their surroundings before buying them can do so after the event. Readers can email personalartshopper@accessibleart-fair.com and the team will fix an appointment to come and see them.

There will also be a special young talent contest whereby three artists aged under 30 will be cho-sen by a jury to exhibit their work.

The brains behind the FairStephanie Manasseh is the Founder and CEO of Accessible Art Fairs Stephanie moved to Brussels in 2005 from Montreal, Canada after having lived in Prague and Milan.

She set up the Accessible Art Fair because, in her opinion, there was too much distance between artists and art lovers. Her goal was to bring the two together and in 2007 the Accessible Art Fair was born. Since then, 11 editions of the Acces-sible Art Fair have been organised in Brussels, Antwerp, Tel Aviv and Vienna.

One of my favourite artists is Jorge Colomina, who was born in Spain in 1953. At the age of 30, he decided to dedicate his career exclusively to his art.

From as far back as he can remember, Colomina admired Picasso, Miro, Cézanne and Matisse. He studied their works and constantly looked to find his own unique style. Colomina’s pain-ting, if it had to be defined, could be considered ‘Figurative-Abstract’.

His Spanish origins are clearly brought out wit-hin his works, covering themes such as the his-tory of different cultures, bullfighting and fla-menco. Women also have a prominent place in his paintings.

Another of my favourites is Wim Wessling, who makes realistic oil paintings inspired by the beauty of the human (male or female) body. His work is produced on linen with oil, mostly in black and white and sometimes in colour.

In his words, he is “inspired by the beauty of the human body, in particular, the curves of the body with the correct exposure and a sharp contrast”.

The pictures are certainly striking and really bring out the most beautiful aspects of the human body and are well worth a look and a chat with the painter. On his website (http://www.wimwessling.eu/), readers can see all his pictures and find his contact details if they are interested in commissioning a painting or tal-king about any ideas.

Welsh born artist Rachel Stewart has worked as an artist in the Netherlands for the past nine

years. Her work is largely inspired by life in the Benelux countries. For Rachel, colour, movement and texture are key buzz words.

Her work looks in a fresh and humorous way at some of the iconic images of the region – be it lar-ger than life tulips or one of her vibrant cityscapes which burst with life and energy. For the past two years, she has exhibited her work at the fabulous tulip garden the Keukenhof as part of the Henk Veen Kunstplein, which involved live action pain-ting as well as exhibiting.

The layout and interior designer for the venue is by Michiel van der Bos, an architect and project manager who combines interior design with conceptual architecture for shops, retail, private residences and other businesses. He has carried out a number of worldwide design projects for brands such as Del-vaux, Godiva, Liu.Jo, Pinko and Inbev. Van der Bos is also a painter and his paintings will be on show at the Fair too.

A few of the other exhibitorsGordon Hopkins is an American artist who was born in 1965. He currently lives and works in Brussels and gathers new ideas and images for his paintings during his travels throughout Europe.

“In my work as an artist it is very important for me to explore the use of bold colours with many layers, repetition and larger than life format. I like to accentuate or exaggerate a sometimes ordinary object or image. The composition often breaks down into an imaginary world of outlines and colourful backgrounds creating depth and movement. It is often just the simple form that can have a great impact and become very important in my work,” he writes.

Charline Lancel is a decorative art expert focusing on abstract compositions. She describes herself as an artist, photographer, filmmaker and desi-gner. She was born in Namur in 1976 and is now based in Brussels.

“Since my early childhood I have had an eye for the beauty of colours and harmony of shapes. After a career in film set design, I have decided to focus on my own artistic output. I hope you like the minimalist and geometrical aspect of my work, informed by the art of Vasarely and

Mondrian, but also by Op’Art, Pop Art and sci-fi universes,” she writes.

Her compositions are made of tiling, diasec and printed aluminum. Her work can be used to build cupboards, doors, walls, furniture, partition walls, handle, doorknob, lateral walls, reception desks, murals and frescoes.

Jacqueline Horler was born in the UK and stu-died Fine Art at the Chelsea School of Art in Lon-don. She has lived and worked in France and Italy since 1990 and cur-rently lives in Paris.

Her paintings are mostly abstract and she thinks of them as a series of ‘imagi-native landscapes’ often inspired by places, literature and poetry. Process is a very important part in what she does. Everything is mutable and fluid. Nothing is fixed. Her paintings are built up over a period of time, layer upon layer, one thing leading into another by way of accident, serendipity and oblique association. Themes emerge as though by chance and certain symbols take on a language of their own.

As she puts it, her work “radiates a certain energy or ‘life force’”. Her paintings can be found in pri-vate collections in France, Italy, UK, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

Magic glimpse‘Visions’ is an invitation to discover the work of three international pho-tographers. With ‘Por-traits - Shadows and Desire’ Stephen L Feld-man searches to be chal-lenged by the images. He sculpts his subjects with light and shadow, provi-ding them a great sense of sensitivity. ‘Urban Vibra-tions’ by Dalia Nosrata-badi is inspired by ‘Soleil levant’ by Monet. Nosra-tabadi invites the visitor to re-discover differently well-known places. She mirrors the landscape by taking pictures of water puddles when she can catch the right moment with the sky and the sun. The result provides ama-zing colorful reflection of townscapes. Whilst ‘Urban landscapes’, by Dan Zollmann, witnesses the daily life of the Jewish orthodox community in Antwerpen. The pho-tographer catches inte-resting moments of that community. With their own special eye, each photographer succeeds to share a part of their sensitivities. M.S.

EU, a patchwork of identities‘Sense of Place’ analyses our relationship with the environ-ment in the context of European photography. The exhibi-tion presents some 160 works of 40 photographers from every member country of the European Union. Brussels’ extraordinary green lungWith a forest accessible by tram and a 120-hectare park right at the end of one of the city’s most central arteries, Brussels is known as the greenest city in Europe.

The Sonian forest, or Forêt de Soignes, stretches across nearly 5000 hectares in Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels-Capital Region. Human activi-ties have long been shaping the ecological lands-cape of this unique haven of silence and space, literally infiltrated into a city of one million inha-bitants. Today more than ever, the Sonian Forest carries a high social, educative and ecological

value for Brussels and its outskirts. Unfortuna-tely the « lungs of Brussels », this magnificent, 200 years ols beech « cathedral forest », suffers from ageing and climate change.

The most popular park of Brussels, is a natural extension of the Sonian forest. Generations of Brusselians have enjoyed the sun on its lawns,

sled on its slopes, skated on its ring, explored its cave and island or danced the night away in – or outside - the city’s most select club housed in one of the park’s picturesque buildings. Today, the Bois de la Cambre is at the center of the struggle for a better mobility in Brussels.

saving the sonian forest The Sonian forest consists mainly of European beeches massively planted by the Austrians two centuries ago to reforest and exploit an immense territory devastated by wars in the XVI and XVIIth centuries. After 1830, when the Belgian state was created, three fifths of the forest (7000 hectares) were sold as private property and cleared by the new owners. Today, the 5000 remaining hectares belong to the Belgian state and have jointly been managed by its three regions for nearly 20 years, sometimes with diverging views and ambitions.

In 2008 however, the responsible authorities wit-hin the three Regions were forced to give a coor-dinated response to the signs of alarm sent by the environmental associations and confirmed by numerous studies : the Sonian forest, with its homogenous population of beeches, suffers from ageing and climate change. The rising tempera-tures in the summer and lower precipitations during the winter are a true ordeal to the forest’s two-hundred-year-old trees, greatly in need of our traditional humidity level. Beeches having a life expectancy of 250 years, a huge part of these 40m tall trees could have disappeared from the « cathedral forest » by 2040.

The three competent regional ministers decided to create a joint roadmap for the preservation of the forest, committing to work hand in hand towards the implementation of coherent preservation and exploitation policies. In May 2012, when a final agreement was found and signed, Evelyne Huy-tebroek, Brussels Minister for the Environment, declared that « the management of such a heritage can be envisaged only in the longer term, taking into account the immutable laws of nature

In the next decade, ecoducts will reconnect between them the parts of the forest which are now split by the Brussels Ring and the E411. Part of the forest will be regenerated with different species of trees in order to improve biodiversity while in other parts, the specificity of the forest will be maintai-ned: beeches will be replanted to preserve its his-torical aspect. Finally, the attractivity of the Sonian forest should be reinforced through the creation, equipment and clear marking of recreational areas to welcome its million of annual visitors.

Today indeed, the social value of the Sonian forest has clearly overtaken the economic value that marked its landscape two hundred years ago. The Brussels-Capital Region maintains 1657 hectares

of the forest situated only 10 km away from the Grand Place. They represent 38% of the entire Sonian forest, 10% of the total surface of the Region and 60% of Brussels’ green public spaces.

The forest lies in the municipalities of Uccle, Watermael-Boitsfort, Auderghem and Woluwe-Saint-Pierre in the Brussels-Capital Region, in

the Walloon towns of La Hulpe and Waterloo and in the Flemish municipalities of Sint-Genesius-Rode, Hoeilaart, Overijse and Tervuren.

Naturally, the Sonian forest is the main leisure spot for Brusselians. Human activities do not come without heavy consequences on biodiver-sity. In some places however, rare and particular habitats are being preserved while they remain open to the public: the « Rouge-Cloître », « Trois Fontaines », « Vuylbeek », « Enfants noyés » and « Pinnebeek » natural reserves are well-known amongst the population.

The Rouge-Cloître Abbey, founded in 1367, gave its name to the luxurious natural site surroun-ding it. Its five ponds, natural reserve, archaeolo-gical remains, restored abbey gardens and buil-dings make of the Rouge-Cloître a true landmark in Brussels’ natural, historical and architectural

heritage. The site notably houses an Art Centre and an information center featuring a permanent exhibition on the forest.

Simultaneously, the site and the forest in general are a refuge for many common and endangered species of bats. Colonies of bats find a home in the forest’s old and hollow trees, and a rich hunting

ground above its many ponds and clearings: bats eat half of their weight in insects every night.

The protection of the species depend on the pre-servation of its habitat, and is one of the main reasons why the Sonian forest was designated as a Special Areo of Conservation under the EU Habi-tats Directive. This implies notably that 10% of the Brussels-Capital Region is part of the Natura 2000 network, a rich ensemble of areas of conser-vation across the EU contributing to the preser-vation of biological diversity on its territory.

Natura 2000 does not prohibit human use of land or resources within the sites proposed, nor does the Habitats Directive require them to have a particular legal protection status, which allows Brusselians to fully enjoy the beauty of the Sonian forest, today and for the years to come.

Bois de la cambre: Brussels’ green artery

Childhood memories, youth adventures or mature tranquility, the project to create a park from a bit of forest and a prestigious avenue lea-ding to it certainly lived up to the expectations of its initiators. In 1860, the government accepted to convert 100 hectares of the Sonian forest into a park and promenade for the citizens of Brussels. Edouard Keilig, an unknown German architect, was commissioned to lay out the park. His project had the merit of scrupulously respecting the ori-ginal topography of the place. The parks, named « Bois de la Cambre », is still composed of 57% of the original forest, and 16% of lawns, among which the « Pelouse de Anglais », where legend has that English soldiers played a HYPERLINK «http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket»cricket match on the eve of the HYPERLINK «http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Waterloo»Battle of Waterloo in 1815. A bronze plaque commemorates the

150th anniversary of this sporting and historical event in these words: « On this field since called Pelouse des Anglais a cricket match was played on the eve of battle by members of British Regiments which fought at Waterloo ».

Today’s Bois de la Cambre has recently been the scene of a political battle between the City of Brussels, which owns and manages the park, and the surrounding municipalities of Uccle and Ixelles. On one side, an ambitious project to generalise the current weekend mobility scheme inside the park, with most of its roads reserved to pedestrians and cyclists. On the other side, two municipalities struggling with the daily traffic of millions of commuters heading towards the city centre through the main entries to Brussels in Delta and Drogenbos notably.

The project of the City of Brussels exasperated its neighbours, leading to yet another « border » issue in Belgium : « the City should mind its neighbours. We could for example manage the Bois de la Cambre jointly. We are suffering King Leopold II’s heritage: the limits of our munici-palities should be revised. Ixelles could include the Avenue Louise and not be split into two by it » declared the mayor (bourgemestre) of Ixelles. The three municipalities finally decided to leave the park open to circulation, and collaborate on improving mobility and hospitality in and around the Bois de la Cambre.

Particularly dear to every Brusselian’s heart is the well known « Chalet Robinson ». Built in 1877 on the small island of the same name in the middle of the Bois de la Cambre pond, it was accessible thanks to a platform-type romantic ferry which stayed operational until the chalet went down to flames in 1991. The Robinson Island, its cha-let and ferry went to sleep for 15 years, during which the City of Brussels received and reviewed quantities of projects for the resumption of the island’s exploitation rights. An agreement nee-ded to be found between the City of Brussels, the “Monuments and Sites” division, the fire depart-ment, the local residents and potential investors. Discussions took place from 1998 to 2002, when all the parties involved were convinced that a reworked version of the original chalet would gain unanimous backing. The reconstruction of a new chalet imagined by architects Marc A. Poons, Yves De Windt and Pierre Cnops began in January 2007. To the joy of many Brusselians, the ferry is intact and operational again.

A deux pas de BruxellesQuatre heures au pas du Shire, pour oublier la ville...Une promenade en calèche, ça n’est pas juste une petite balade kitsch dans un parc : Meteoron organise des randonnées dans la campagne brabançonne tiré par les chevaux les plus grands du monde : une après-midi entière pour se ressourcer dans un décor de rêve...

A droite, Maybelle, 1420 kg. A gauche Joyce, à peine quelques kilos en moins. Deux juments énormes et hautes, à l’air paisible. Elles appartiennent à la race des Shires, les plus grand chevaux du monde, avec en moyenne 1,80 m au garrot ! Ces chevaux de trait puissants et beaux furent la principale source d’énergie de l’agriculture pendant des centaines d’années. Doués pour le trait oui, mais aussi bons pour la monte : ce sont eux aussi qui emmenaient les chevaliers en armure à la guerre. Au galop, ils peuvent monter jusque 50 km/h !

Désormais, cette race anglaise est en voie de dis-parition, il resterait environ 3 000 Shires dans le monde, dont certains en Russie depuis quelques années. Pourquoi là-bas ? Parce que la puissance et la taille de ces chevaux hors-normes corres-pondent parfaitement à l’apparat des défilés mili-taires nombreux dans ce pays.

Outre leur histoire étonnante et leur physique extraordinaire, les Shires ont un caractère calme et une grosse envie de se dépenser : le travail ne leur fait pas peur et trotter en côte est un jeu d’en-fants ! Tout ça donne envie de voir en vrai de quoi il retourne, non ?

Un groupe d’amoureux de ce cheval organise jus-tement des randonnées en calèche, et ce, non loin de Bruxelles ! Un parcours qui fait des vagues…Une dizaine de terrains à l’abandon ont été subtilement transformés dans la zone du canal et sont désormais accessibles au public.

Alors que la Région compte un nombre impres-sionnant d’espaces verts, les quartiers qui longent le canal en sont paradoxalement presque entiè-rement dépourvus. Pour prouver qu’il est tout à fait possible de remédier à ce déséquilibre, une dizaine de terrains à l’abandon ou en passe d’être réaménagés ont été transformés et sont ouverts au public jusqu’au 14 octobre, dans le cadre de l’action “Parckdesign”, initiée par Bruxelles-Environnement et la ministre de l’Environ-nement, Evelyne Huytebroeck. Par le biais de

subtiles interventions paysagères et artistiques qui tiennent compte de la spécificité de chaque site, l’édition 2012 de cette biennale nous invite à réinterpréter le rôle des terrains en friche qui pullulent à Bruxelles. Comment se réapproprier ces espaces ? Pour en faire quoi ? L’objectif est de mettre en évidence leur énorme potentiel, ainsi que la biodiversité présente sur le territoire.

Le point de départ de ce parcours de jardins vagues se situe dans la cour de la maison de la cohésion

sociale “Curo-Hall”, à Anderlecht, qui dispose désormais d’une série de nouveaux aménage-ments permanents : un potager, une grande struc-ture en bois, du mobilier… Les visiteurs pourront ensuite aller d’un jardin à l’autre à vélo – une sta-tion Villo ! est établie à deux pas de là – ou à bord du “Trash Taxi”, une voiture spécialement affrétée pour l’occasion dans laquelle sont diffusés toutes sortes de témoignages. Enfin, pour pénétrer sur les sites, ils devront “oser” passer une barrière de fils “métallico-élastiques”, petit clin d’œil à la transgression qu’ils sont en train de commettre… Réflexion et participation sont définitivement les maîtres-mots de cette édition de “Parckdesign” : plusieurs comités et associations de quartiers ont pris part à l’aventure, encadrés par des équipes pluridisciplinaires composées d’artistes, de desi-gners, d’architectes et de paysagistes.

The house-sharing boomThis is still a typically Brussels phenomenon which can be explained by the significant increase in the rents for small properties, studios, and one-bedroom apartments.

PEOPLE DO NOT MERELY DECIDE TO SHARE A PROPERTY AND THE RENT FOR FINANCIAL REASONS. They also choose to do this for senti-mental reasons (a young couple, for example) or because they are friends: some prefer to put off the transition to adult life for a while in order to extend their rather more carefree student life, when they used to share student digs. Others like the idea of sharing (friends and acquain-tances, discussions and activities and even... household chores); and some believe that house sharing is the improved and less homebound version of the «Tanguy» case, a first name – that of the hero of a film made by Etienne Chatiliez in 2001 - highlighting the lives of young adults who lived with their parents well into their twenties and even into their thirties.

Regardless of this, and without exception, the financial aspect is indeed one of the key aspects when people choose to share a house:

housemates can afford a third, a quarter, a fifth or even a sixth of a large house or apartment for the same budget, or even less than they would have to spend on a small studio.

The house sharing trend was adopted rather late in Belgium. At least when compared with France. But now it is experiencing a boom. In Brussels that is. Ghislain van Caloen, who is in charge of rental management and building maintenance at Gesti-Conseils, a Brussels-based company which manages properties on behalf of owners, says that“the house sharing trend has always been around but in the last five to six years it has seen an increase. People even share two-bedroom apartments and between one third and half of all of our apartments are shared by tenants!».

The trend is less marked in other Belgian cities, such as Liège, Namur, Ghent or Antwerp. “We

have received requests in the past, but they are few and far between, says a spokesperson for Latour&Petit in Namur. It is not really a trend here”. “In Antwerp, explains Philippe Janssens, a consultant for Stadim, house sharing is mainly a phenomenon at the low-price end of the range. It is not really an option in the mid-price range.”

If people consider sharing a house, they must have difficulties trying to rent a property on their own. “Above all, the price differences should be less significant, adds Philippe Jans-sens, between small apartments that are pro-portionately expensive and large properties that are proportionally less expensive”. And that difference is felt more keenly in Brussels than in other cities. “The trend took off in Brussels because low rents increased significantly at the same time as high rents contracted”, confirms Jean Corman, CEO of Victoire Properties. “That is the law of supply and demand, adds Ghislain

van Caloen. In the 500 to 1,000 euro bracket rents are increasing. But they are decreasing in the 1,000 to 2,000 euro bracket. Above that you enter the high-end range and these pro-perties are rented to another type of tenant (Eurocrats,…). The success of house sharing is also due to the overall quality of real estate in Brussels. It is not in line with the Housing Code or with demand. Housemates will accept what a family would refuse”.

Given that tenants can rent a bigger house, for the same price, multiplied by three, four, or five, they prefer to combine their finan-cial resources. “At least if the property lends itself to house sharing”, says Jean Corman. And he lists the essentials. “The main crite-rion is the number of rooms. You also need a number of bathrooms that is consistent with the number of bedrooms : two bathrooms for five bedrooms is a minimum requirement, but generally three are preferable in terms of prac-tical organisation. It doesn’t matter whether the property is homogeneous, for example if it has one large living room, a study and two smaller rooms this is not a problem: the costs

can be divvied up according to each tenant’s income; for example a couple may choose the bigger room. That said, so far the trend is not for mixed households. It does happen now and then but generally the profile of housemates is usually a group of young women, or a group of young people. ”

“The property should also be easy to maintain, says the broker. It doesn’t have to be luxu-rious, but it needs to be practical. And if there is a garden, it shouldn’t be too large. Because when you think of house sharing you think of individuals who don’t want to incur too many charges. A large garden could be an obstacle. A large terrace is usually sufficient.” In terms of location, everything is fine as long as the property is located in an urban setting (Châ-telain, Flagey, ULB, etc.) or along one of the main access routes into the city with public transport.

But house sharing is only possible if the owners accept this option. Some owners are very reluctant, as they are concerned about the shared responsibility and maintenance... and the associated vagueness. And house sha-ring usually involves more individuals than for example in an average household, which means more visitors, more noise, more nui-sance for the immediate neighbours. And what happens when the group implodes or one of the housemates leaves? “That is why we are very careful about the terms of the lease, so that the owner always has a contact, says Jean Corman. Housemates enter a col-lective commitment and they are in charge of finding replacements. And we also multiply the guarantees. Each housemate must have a guarantor, for example one of their parents.” Although Victoire Properties accepts long leases, Gesti-Conseils refuses them. “That’s one of our rules, stipulates Ghislain van Caloen. We only accept short-term leases. We start with a one-year contract. If it works out we will renew it. Young people have no pro-blems with this formula, especially if they like the location. Because where will they be in a year from now? They don’t even know them-selves so they are not bothered by short-term contracts.”

Gesti-Conseils is also stricter about the pro-perties it offers : no houses, only apartments. “When we rent a property, says the property manager, we prefer proper maintenance, which is why we prefer to rent to families. I prefer a property to be vacant for two months – when the value is between 800,000 and 1 million euros - instead of renting it to joint tenants because it runs counter to the real estate”.

But while property owners are not always happy to rent out their property to joint tenants they do it all the same: Ii is one way of maintaining an income in today’s diffi-cult rental market. “It is a way of countering the pressure on high rents and to meet market demand”, says Jean Corman. Nothing is more... of an incentive than an empty property or a reduction of rental prices. “In a sense, house sharing is a way out”, he confirms. It even affords them the possibility to raise the rent “No, insists Jean Corman. House sharing is not an excuse for raising the rent. It allows home owners to maintain their rent, instead of being forced to reduce it”. “That’s right, says Ghislain van Caloen. Before the crisis you could easily find tenants for rents between 2,000 and 2,500 euros. These days that’s no longer the case. In some cases, house sharing has allowed owners to increase the rent, from 1,800 to 2,000 euros for a four-bedroom apartment for example. That said, in the beginning, the requests to share a house came from the tenants only... «these days the owners are even suggesting it...», says the property manager.

House sharing has become a real trend in Brussels. It is a way out for some owners whose income has been affected by the economic crisis.

Joint tenants, subleases : more freedom, but there are conditionsSharing a house should be done according to some rules in order to ensure the best living conditions for all the tenants.

A HOUSEMATE IS NOT A student sharing a student house, who enjoys several advantages, such as a ten or twelve month contract at the most. Also students are not required to regis-ter with the municipality where they live. In Brussels and in the Walloon Region planning permission needs to be requested from the local administration so that a building or a house can be converted into student accom-modation. This planning permission will help distinguish student housing from a traditional apartment.

But what is the difference between students sharing a house and joint tenants? Answer : they are almost like any other tenant. The Centre d’Information et Documentation pour Jeunes (CIDJ, Centre for Information and Documentation for Young People) notes that in effect “there currently is no specific legis-lation about house sharing, meaning that the traditional rental rules apply in this case”. That said, the CIDJ is quick to add that certain basic principles need to be respected in order to ensure the best living conditions.

1Signatories of the lease. There is no specific contract for joint tenants. The owner (or the lessor) and the hou-

semates (who are designated as lessees) have to sign a standard lease of princi-pal residence. There are two possibilities. - Either the housemates all sign the lease (all the names have to be on the lease), with a clause added to the lease authorising re-leasing or the replacement of one housemate by ano-ther. In order to avoid being accountable to the other housemates and to the owner in case of an early departure a housemate can thus sug-gest a third person, who then acquires the same «rights and duties» as the other tenants wit-hout having to sign a new lease. In that case the releasing clause has to be included in the lease. - Or only one tenant signs the lease, and the others become subtenants. The signatory then is the only person who will be held accountable by the owner.

2Duration of the lease. This may be a short-term lease, i.e., for one to three years, or a “traditional” lease,

which lasts nine years. A short-term lease is recommended in order to avoid a long-term commitment in case of problems with the apartment, the landlord or a tenant.

3Security deposit. Except for furnished apartments, which require non-regu-lated amounts, the security deposit

may not be less than 2 months of rent wit-hout charges (if deposited into a blocked bank account in the name of the tenant(s)) or 3 months (a bank guarantee which the tenant pays in several instalments). This guarantee can be used to compensate the owner for any amounts owed by the joint tenants at the end of the contract (unpaid rent, damages)..

4Guarantee. A third party (often a parent) commits to paying the rent in case one of the housemates defaults. Attention, one

guarantee per tenant is preferable, otherwise this person will be responsible for all the tenants.

5Registration. One or several people sha-ring a house may decide to register with the municipality where the pro-

perty is situated. Daniel Mignolet, a Project Manager at Habitat et Participation, stipulates that registering only applies to “tenants who live full-time in the property in question”.

6Charges. In some cases, as is the case for electricity, the tenants may decide to work with one single meter in the name of

one of the tenants and to divide the total by the number of tenants or to install individual meters to share the cost. Generally one meter, with the cost being divvied up among the tenants, is the more frequently used option.

Brussels Yoga Sunday : la plus grande séance de Yoga de BelgiqueLe dimanche 9 septembre, Brussels Yoga Sunday ins-crira la capitale européenne sous le signe de la sérénité. Rencontre avec Bernadette Erpicum à l’origine de cette journée hors du commun.

Quel est le but de cet événement ?Diffuser les bienfaits du yoga auprès du plus grand nombre ainsi que les multiples voix de celles et ceux qui pratiquent cette discipline. Le yoga connaît un succès grandissant à travers le monde. Il est proposé aujourd’hui dans les milieux hospitaliers, le monde du spectacle, le milieu des affaires, celui du sport de haut niveau et en entreprise. Il y a de nombreuses années, le mot yoga évoquait un monde mystérieux d’individus noués et méditant dans les massifs de l’Himalaya. Beau-coup de gens l’imaginent encore ainsi.

Il est vrai que le yoga est très ancien et vient de l’Orient mais rien ne s’oppose à ce que nous en bénéficiions dans notre société occidentale. Son efficacité à réduire le stress et améliorer grandement l’état physique et mental en fait une activité parfaitement adaptée à nos besoins. Son avenir est très prometteur. Un bien bel ItalienC’est bientôt la fin de l’été. Pour faire passer la pilule en douceur, on recommence avec une adresse italienne de derrière les fagots : Da Piero.

Pour les connaisseurs, le nom de « Da Piero » évoque des souvenirs de bonnes bouffes. Plé-biscité par de nombres accros, l’homme pos-sédait un restaurant dans la rue Antoine Dansaert. Le style « Da Piero » ? Beaucoup de simplicité et un ego qui a l’intelligence de se cacher derrière l’assiette. Le tout pour des préparations qui en ont laissé plus d’un nostalgiques. Bonne nouvelle, Da Piero est aujourd’hui de retour. Fidèle à son amour du « downtown » bruxellois, il s’est implanté non loin de sa précédente adresse. C’est désormais Place Saint-Géry qu’on le trouve. Installé dans une maison pleine de charme, le nouveau décor des opérations va comme un gant à ce chef sin-cère et sans reproche. La dite maison relève du patrimoine bruxellois – il s’agit d’un relais de poste du début du 17ème siècle. A l’arrière, une jolie petite terrasse titille un bras de la Senne en version non voûtée. La salle, quant à elle, ne manque pas de charme avec son bardage en bois, ses nappes blanches et ses vieilles gra-vures aux murs. L’atmosphère qui se dégage est celle d’une trattoria un rien surannée qui se serait perdue en terres septentrionales.

Alléchant

Dès l’entrée, l’œil est accroché par une « tavola calda » carrément pittoresque. Des poulpes, des sardines, des couteaux farcis, des légumes froids, des olives… composent une nature morte que l’on pourrait contempler des heures. C’est évidemment la première chose que l’on com-mande (10,50€) tant on tient là une invitation à enjamber les Alpes. Ce qui arrive devant vous est une ode à la nature qui panache brocolis, aubergines, courgettes, poivrons, artichauts

huilés et vinaigrés comme il se doit. Non seu-lement c’est délicieux mais en plus c’est abso-lument débarrassé de toute prétention. C’est beau un chef qui accepte de se laisser oublier derrière ses produits – on en connaît tellement qui se serait empressé de rappeler leur savoir-faire. Que commander après cela ? On mise sur les spaghetti alle vongole veraci (15€). Bien vu, c’est tout aussi touchant. Si l’on osait, on ferait bien une métaphore littéraire. Il y a du Flaubert chez Da Piero. En effet, l’auteur d’Un Cœur Simple avait le génie – à force de travail – de disparaître derrière ses phrases. Pas d’effets de manche, pas de « regardez comme j’écris bien juste », juste un pur enchaînement des mots. Da Piero, lui, enchaîne l’huile, l’ail, le vin blanc, les pâtes et les vongole avec la justesse des tout grands.

de genévrier d’Italie pour le côté épicé, de la racine d’angélique

pour le côté musqué et suave et de la racine d’iris pour lier toutes ces saveurs. Vieilli pen-dant 3 ans, on ajoute encore un soupçon de rose et de l’essence de concombre. Le Wall Street Journal l’a élu meilleur gin au monde. A déguster avec du tonic, des glaçons et des ron-delles de concombre.

Moins c’est plus ! Les wine-bars se suivent… et ne se ressemblent pas. Nouveau venu sur la scène horeca bruxelloise, voici Nuno qui buzze juste et bon. Suivez-nous, vous ne le regretterez pas

Si on vous dit que Nuno est « la » nouvelle adresse de Saint-Gilles, vous voyez déjà le topo… Eh bien, non, justement pas. Ce bar à vins sous-titré « vino, cibo e altro » ne parade pas du côté du Parvis. Zéro show off, bien au contraire, l’endroit se terre rue Ducpétiaux, dans la partie méconnue de cette artère, soit celle qui se trouve du côté de la chaussée de Charleroi. Tant mieux avec ce quartier à l’élec-troencéphalogramme plat, au moins on est sûr d’être à l’abri des foules hipsters. On écrit « la » nouvelle adresse non parce que c’est un fait avéré mais parce que l’enseigne mérite qu’elle devienne le rendez-vous phare d’un public éclairé. Pourquoi ? D’abord parce que l’auteur du lieu – on n’a pas envie de parler de « patron », ni de « concepteur » - fait valoir une approche d’une grande pureté. L’homme propose une toute petite carte de grignotages – il a deux, voire trois fournisseurs - mais sans la moindre fausse note. On aime aussi son look, David Serenelli est une sorte de Pierre Jancou bruxel-lois. Tatouages hyper stylés – un magnifique rasoir de barbier sur le cou… laisse présager une vie sur le fil – et dégaine de bad boy pour un fou de food. Le bon plan ? Laisser parler cet ancien de la toute proche Bottega. Le mélange français et italien de ce Piémontais est le plus sûr moyen de quitter la capitale à la verticale.

Ce qu’on aime par-dessous tout au Nuno, c’est qu’il ne ramène pas. Le décor de café dans le jus ne racole pas. Quand on y arrive par une soirée de beau temps, on squatte la terrasse qui tend les bras. Les deux tables et les quatre bancs plantent une atmosphère de fête au village. Idem pour les lampions enroulés autour des parasols. L’ambiance urbaine est de celles qui donnent envie de rester des heures. On débute par un blanc superbement minéral – Bianco-lella à 4€ - ainsi qu’un prosecco divin (5€) et DOC en provenance directe de Valdobbiadene. Les papilles sont affûtées. David Serenelli dégaine alors trois assiettes : un mixte charcu et fromage (19,50€), un carpaccio de bresaola (15€) et une assiette de légumes (8€) – des

courgettes coupées finement en marinées dans l’huile d’olive et la menthe. Ces préparations sont d’une justesse incroyable que souligne la qualité des produits. Un reproche ? Un seul, le rouge, un Barbera d’Asti Lavignone (5€) servi trop chaud à notre goût. Toujours est-il que cet endroit est la meilleure chose qui soit arrivée à Bruxelles depuis longtemps et qu’on en est sorti avec cette belle impression d’une adresse dans laquelle tout un cœur a été déposé.

Un parcours santé magnifiquement bien équipé, sur un sentier en dolomie, longe la rue Montagne des Cerisiers.

L’un se trouve dans le parc du Bon Pasteur (9,67 ha), on y entre par l’avenue Stroobants. L’autre se situe dans le Complexe Sportif de la Commune, avenue des Anciens combattants.

9 Health route-discovery in Haren 1000 Brussels/Parcours santé-découverte à Haren – 1000 Bruxelles

A marked route of 3.5 km in the country lanes of Haren is designed to raise health awareness around four themes: a stop for plants, for biodi-versity, for natural elements and slow mobility. 32 poles of acacia of 1m high and pain-ted at the end in a color code which allows walkers to follow the path The road design was entrusted to the artist Domitienne Cuvelier. / Promenade balisée de 3,5 ha sur les chemins vicinaux de Haren visant à sensibiliser à la santé autour de 4 thé-matiques : halte plantes, halte bio-diversité, halte éléments naturels, halte mobilité douce. 32 piquets en acacias de 1m de haut peints aux extrémités dans un code couleur per-mettent aux promeneurs de suivre le parcours. La conception du balisage a été confiée à l’artiste Domitienne Cuvelier.

It is a nice place for running in town. The lap around the outside fence is about 2,25 km long … ideal! To run in the park of Brussels, Place des Palais is slightly easier and offers an outline of the park

of 1500m, between two sandwiches, it’s perfect! / Le parc du Cinquantenaire, une initiative du Roi Léopold II à l’occasion du 50ème anniversaire de la création de l’état belge est situé entre le rond-point Schuman, les avenues des Nerviens, de la Renais-sance et de Tervuren, il couvre une trentaine d’hectares et est un endroit rêvé où courir en ville. La distance du périmètre est de 2,25 km … idéal ! Courir dans le parc de Bruxelles, place des Palais est légèrement plus soft et offre un contour du parc de 1500m, entre deux sandwichs, c’est parfait !
