July 2015

Dear Bryn Mawr School Families,

Beginning Wednesday, August 26, 2015, we will activate our emergency notification system that will let you know immediately about weather-related and emergency school closings. All Bryn Mawr and Bryn Mawr Little School families must subscribe to the e2Campus emergency notification system. The system provides families with notices of emergency school closings by sending broadcast messages directly to e-mail, voice, and text messaging inboxes. Bryn Mawr has contracted for the service through the e2Campus/Omnilert, LLC, and the service will be effective for you immediately upon your registration on the school’s website.

If you are new to Bryn Mawr and need to register for the e2Campus Emergency Notification System, go to www.brynmawrschool.org/parents and click on the link on the left side that says “e2Campus.” Then, follow the instructions.

Please take a moment to register for e2Campus ENS or to update your e2Campus contact informa-tion if there have been changes to it in the past year. We ask that you complete your registration for e2Campus ENS immediately and if necessary make any changes to your current contact information.

Note: Please be sure to write down your password, as the e2Campus administrator has access to your username, but not your password.

Thank you so much for your cooperation and support in helping Bryn Mawr maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for our students and everyone on campus. If you have questions about the e2Campus Emergency Notification System at Bryn Mawr, please feel free to contact me at 410.323.8800 x1616 or email me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Terry DetorieDirector of Security

Whom to Call in the Upper School

Students do best when they see their parents and teachers as allies. That takes teamwork! All the adults who care about your daughter – teachers, administrators, and parents – see a different side of her, and we need to work hard to keep one another informed, remembering always that our ultimate goal is her aca-demic and emotional growth. At the same time, we all need to remember that one of your daughter’s Upper School “tasks” is to become increasingly independent. Too much intervention on a child’s behalf – no matter how well-intended, and no matter whether it is initiated by the school or by the family – under-mines her ability to advocate for herself and may send her the message that she is not capable of handling things on her own. If your daughter complains about a problem at school, please encourage her to work toward its resolution by speaking with the appropriate person. Learning to deal with conflict is an essential part of growing up!

There will be times, however, when you really feel the need to talk to someone at school. As her parent, you know your daughter intimately and you play an essential role in her education and growth. Please know that we value your input. To facilitate our ability to communicate easily and to work as a team, here are the names and titles of some essential people in your daughter’s school life, along with some suggestions for when you might find it helpful to contact them.

Traffic Safety At Bryn Mawr

As we prepare for the new school year, we ask you to review the following topics related to traffic flow in and around The Bryn Mawr School. Adherence to these policies and procedures is essential to the safety of our students as they are dropped off and picked up at school. Bryn Mawr’s location in a residential neighborhood makes it necessary that all drivers and pedestrians pay close attention to the traffic patterns and regulations designed specifically to make traffic flow smoothly and safely. In addition, the school requests that all drivers be respectful of our neighborhood residents, taking particular care not to block their driveways. SPEED on all neighboring streets should never exceed 25 MPH. During drop-off and pick-up times, 10 MPH is the safest speed.

MELROSE AVENUE remains closed for drop-off and pick-up.

LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS should be dropped off and picked up at the Lower School Administration Building. They may be picked up at the Northern Parkway circle by Centennial Hall if the Lower School Office has been notified ahead of time. The Gordon Drive should not be used for carpool.

MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS should be dropped off and picked up at the Northern Parkway circle by Centennial Hall. This is a NO PARKING area, and cars left unattended will be ticketed. (See below for details.)

ALL PEDESTRIANS must use campus sidewalks and crosswalks. No one is to walk in the driveways or roads.

ON-CAMPUS PARKING is limited. All numbered spaces are reserved for faculty and staff. Visitors should park in the designated visitor parking spaces that are available in front of the Gatehouse and east of the Gordon entrance. The Gordon driveway is for faculty/staff and Admission visitors parking only. ALL-SCHOOL EVENTS bring many cars to the streets surrounding the school. Please look first to park in designated spaces at Bryn Mawr. Those who must park off campus should remember that they are in a residential neighborhood and be appropriately courteous when they are driving, parking, or walking.

Your support and help in providing for the safe arrival and departure of our students is greatly appreciated. Thank you as well for driving courteously on campus and in our surrounding neighborhood.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact director of security Terry Detorie at [email protected] or 410.323.8800 x1616. Thank you for your continued cooperation.

Dear Middle & Upper School Families,

As we look forward to a safe and productive school year, I want to review the Middle and Upper School carpool procedures as well as our early-arrival and late-stay programs for children. These procedures are in place to ensure the safety of our campus community.

Middle and Upper School Carpool ProceduresEffective Wednesday, September 3, 2015

• No student may be dropped off or picked up on the Gordon Driveway, Melrose Avenue, Kenmore Avenue, at 600 West and/or at the bridge crossing on Northern Parkway Drive. Students will receive detentions for violating this policy.

• Middle and Upper School students without siblings in the Lower School must be dropped off at the top of the traffic loop at the Northern Parkway entrance to the school. To ensure safety, students should get into and out of vehicles from the sidewalk side of the loop only.

• We have observed that traffic backs up on Northern Parkway at peak carpool times. If you are arriving at or leaving from the Northern Parkway entrance to the school from 7:45 to 8:00 a.m. and 3:15 to 3:45 p.m., you will likely experience traffic congestion. Please stay alert and take care to observe the stop signs and the clearly marked crosswalks. Be aware that on Bryn Mawr’s campus, pedestrians have the right-of-way. Drivers are required to stop and allow them to proceed.

Early-Arrival & Late-Stay Programs

For your convenience, we will provide morning supervision for students arriving between 7:00 and 7:45 a.m. All students arriving early should be dropped off at the top of the traffic loop at the North-ern Parkway entrance to the school (please do not use Melrose Avenue or the Gordon Driveway as an early morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up location). Students will enter school through Centennial Hall and proceed to morning supervision in the Dining Center. Afternoon supervision for Middle School students will be held until 6:00 p.m. Middle School students should be picked-up from their respective late-stay locations.

Your support and help in providing for the safe arrival and departure of our students is greatly appreciated. Thank you as well for driving courteously on campus and in our surrounding neighborhood.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 410.323.8800 x1616. Thank you for your continued cooperation.

Sincerely,

Terry DetorieDirector of Security
