    Foreword

    I S 0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0 technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non- governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0 collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

    Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

    International Standard IS0 8501-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISOTTC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 12, Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products.

    INTERNATIONAL STANDARD IS0 8501-2:1994(E)

    Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products - Visual assessment of surface cleanliness -

    Part 2: Preparation grades of previously coated steel substrates after localized removal of previous coatings

    Introduction

    The performance of protective coatings of paint and related products applied to steel is significantly affected by the state of the steel surface immediately prior to painting. The principal factors that are known to influence this performance are

    a) the presence of rust and mill scale;

    b) the presence of surface contaminants, including salts, dust, oils and greases;

    c) the surface profile.

    International Standards I S 0 8501, IS0 8502 and IS0 8503 have been prepared to provide methods of assessing these factors, while IS0 8504 provides guidance on the preparation methods that are available for cleaning steel substrates, indicating the capabilities of each in attaining specified levels of cleanliness.

    These International Standards do not contain recommendations for the pro- tective coating systems to be applied to the steel surface. Neither do they contain recommendations for the surface quality requirements for specific situations even though surface quality can have a direct influence on the choice of protective coating to be applied and on its performance. Such recommendations are found in other documents such as national standards

    and codes of practice. It will be necessary for the users of these International Standards to ensure that the qualities specified are

    - compatible and appropriate both for the environmental conditions to which the steel will be exposed and for the protective coating system to be used;

    - within the capability of the cleaning procedure specified.

    The four International Standards referred to above deal with the following aspects of preparation of steel substrates:

    IC0 8501 - Visual assessment of surface cleanliness;

    IS0 8502 - Tests for the assessment ofsurface cleanliness;

    IS0 8503 - Surface roughness characteristics of blast-cleaned steel sub- strates;

    IS0 8504 - Surface preparation methods. Each of these International Standards is in turn divided into separate parts.

    This part of IS0 8501 supplements IS0 8501-1. It identifies certain degrees of visual cleanliness (designated as "preparation grades") following surface preparation of steel surfaces after localized removal of previous paint coatings. These levels of visual cleanliness are related to the common methods of surface cleaning that are used prior to painting.

    The photographic examples for preparation grades P Sa 2% and P Ma have been taken from DIN 55928, Part4, Supplement 1 (August 1978) and Supplement 2 (January 19861, respectively.

    The basis of this part of IS0 8501 is the experience that complete removal of all previous paint coatings is not always necessary. This is especially true where maintenance work is carried out at regular intervals. For localized removal to be preferred, the following conditions should be fulfilled:

    - the remaining intact coating should make a useful and durable contri- bution to the new corrosion protection system and be compatible with it;

    - during cleaning of locally corroded areas down to the substrate, the coatings on the surrounding areas should not be irreparably or signifi- cantly damaged;

    1 Scope

    This part of IS0 8501 specifies a series of preparation grades for steel sur- faces after localized removal of previous paint coatings The various prep- aration grades are defined by written descriptions (see clause 4) together with the representative photographic examples given in IS0 8501-1. In ad- dition, photographs showing examples of preparation grades P Sa 2% and P Ma are given.

    This part of IS0 8501 is applicable to surfaces prepared for painting by methods such as blast-cleaning, hand- and power-tool cleaning, and machine abrading.

    This part of IS08501 relates the cleanliness of a surface to its visual ap- pearance. In many instances this is sufficient, but for coatings likely to be exposed to severe environments, such as water immersion and continuous condensation conditions, consideration should be given to testing for soluble salts and other invisible contaminants on the visually clean surface by the physical and chemical methods which form the subjects of the various parts of IS0 8502. The roughness characteristics of the surface should also be considered by reference to IS0 8503.

    2 Normative references

    The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of IS0 8501. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this part of IS08501 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. Members of IEC and IS0 maintain registers of currently valid International Standards.

    3 Condition of the painted surface to be cleaned

    The degrees of degradation which may be found on previously coated sur- faces shall be assessed in accordance with IS0 4628, parts l to 6.

    i f possible, supplementary information about the previous coating, concern- ing the generic type, number of coats applied, manufacturer's name, cor- rosive contaminants, adhesion and film thickness, shall be given.

    4 Preparation grades

    4.1 General

    A number of preparation grades, indicating the method of surface prep- aration and the degree of cleariing, are specified. The preparation grades are defined (see 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4) by written descriptions of the surface appear- ance after the cleaning operation.

    Each preparation grade is designated by the appropriate letters "Sa", "St" or "Ma" to indicate the type of cleaning method used. The letter P before Sa, St or Ma indicates only localized removal of previous paint coatings. The number following, if any, indicates the degree of cleaning from mill scale, rust and previous coatings.

    It should be realized that the various methods of cleaning do not give com- parable results. The degree of cleaning shall be compatible with the generic type of coating system to be used for recoating.

    Reference is made in 4.2 and 4.3 to the photographs in IS0 8501-1 which are representative photographic examples of preparation grades.

    NOTES

    2 The term "foreign matter" used in 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 includes water-soluble salts and residues from welding flux. These contaminants cannot be completely removed from the surface by dry blast-cleaning, hand- or power-tool cleaning or machine abrading; wet blast-cleaning can be used.

    3' Mill scale, rust or a paint coating is considered to be poorly adhering if it can be removed by lifting with a blunt putty knife.

    4 The photographic representations appended to this part of IS0 8501 show some typical examples of steel prior to and after localized cleaning.

    4.2 Localized blast-cleaning of previously coated surfaces, P Sa

    Surface preparation by localized blast-cleaning is designated by the letters "P Sa".

    Prior to blast-cleaning, any heavy layers of rust shall be removed by chip- ping. Visible oil, grease and dirt shall also be removed.

    After blast-cleaning, loose dust and debris shall be cleaned from the surface.

    NOTE 5 For descriptions of surface preparation methods by blast-cleaning, including treatment prior to and after the blast-cleaning procedure, see IS0 8504-2.

    Detailed descriptions of the prepared areas are given in 5.1 to 5.3.

    5.1 Typical cases of very thorough localized blast-cleaning (P Sa 2%)

    The two pairs of photographs given in the first and second photographic plates and described in 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 illustrate two typical cases encoun- tered in practice.

    5.1.1 Iron oxide shop primer (first photographic plate)

    These photos show a surface with a red iron oxide shop primer before and after the blast-cleaning procedure. On the left-hand side of the photo, a rusted weld joint is visible, while the upper right-hand side shows rusted weld runs.

    5.1.2 Corrosion protection system (second plate)

    These photos show a surface with a corrosion protection system (red lead/micaceous iron oxide), which has been exposed for a long period, before and after the blast-cleaning procedure. In the upper photo, wide- spread rusty regions and regions of sound coating can be seen. Before complete recoating of the surface, the regions of sound coating would have to be cleaned and roughened.

    5.2 Extreme cases of very thorough localized blast-cleaning (P Sa 2%)

    The two pairs of photographs given in the third and fourth photographic plates and described in 5.2.1 and 5.2.2 show extreme examples of the broad range of possibilities for application of preparation grade P Sa 2%.

    5.2.1 A sound coating (third plate)

    These photos show localized blast-cleaning of corroded spots on areas showing a generally sound coating that required only partial repair and which could also have been prepared by abrading or scraping and brushing the deteriorated areas.

    These photos show a coating that will have to be recoated completely in spite of only insignificant visible rust stains. Overall removal of the coating to preparation grade Sa 2% should also be considered.

    5.3 Typical cases of localized machine abrading (P Ma)

    The three pairs of photographs given on the fifth, sixth and seventh photo- graphic plates and described in 5.3.1 and 5.3.2 illustrate three typical cases encountered in practice.

    5.3.1 Repair work

    5.3.1.1 Upper sides of a hatch cover (fifth plate)

    These photos show a corrosion protective system, approximate age 15 years, applied by brush, consisting of two priming coats (orange and brown) based on red lead, followed by two grey finishing coats based on synthetic resin. Weathering of the coating system in the brush marks is clearly visible in the upper photo, because the surface has already been cleaned by steam jet.

    The surface is shown before and after further preparation (derusting of the rusted areas by machine abrading using a disc followed by brushing of the surface).

    5.3.1.2 Upper side of a steel girder (sixth plate)

    NORME INTERNATIONALE IS0 8501-2:1994(F)

    Prparation des subjectiles d'acier avant application de peintures et de produits assimils - valuation visuelle de la propret d'un subjectile - Partie 2: Degr de prparation des subjectiles d'acier prcdemment revtus aprs dcapage localis des couches

    Introduction

    L'efficacit des revtements de peinture et produits assimils de protection appliqus sur de l'acier est nettement affecte par l'tat du subjectile juste avant l'application de la peinture. Les principaux facteurs connus affectant cette efficacit sont

    a) la prsence de rouille et de calamine;

    b) la prsence d'agents contaminants de surface, tels que sels, pous- sires, huiles, graisses;

    c) le profil de surface.

    Les Normes internationales I S 0 8501, IS0 8502 et IS0 8503 ont t labores afin de fournir des mthodes pour valuer ces facteurs, alors que I'ISO 8504 fournit des directives sur les mthodes de prparation existantes pour le nettoyage des subjectiles d'acier, avec les possibilits de chacune de par- venir aux niveaux de propret prescrits.

    Ces Normes internationales ne proposent aucune recommandation pour les systmes de revtement de protection appliquer sur le subjectile d'acier. Elles ne proposent pas non plus de recommandations quant aux exigences sur ia qualit du subjectile dans des cas particuliers, bien que ce facteur puisse avoir une influence directe sur le revtement appliquer et sur son efficacit. On trouvera de telles recommandations dans d'autres documents

    tels que les normes nationales ou les codes d'utilisation. II conviendra que les utilisateurs de ces Normes internationales s'assurent que les qualits prescrites sont

    - compatibles et adaptes tant l'environnement auquel le subjectile sera expos qu'aux revtements de protection utiliser;

    - dans les limites des possibilits du mode de nettoyage prescrit.

    Les quatre Normes internationales auxquelles il est fait rfrence ci-dessus traitent des aspects suivants de la prparation des subjectiles d'acier:

    IS0 8501 - valuation visuelle de la propret d'un subjectile;

    IS0 8502 - Essais pour l'valuation de la propret d'un subjecrile;

    IS0 8503 - Caractristiques de rugosit des subjectiles d'acier dcaps;

    IS0 8504 - Mthodes de prparation des surfaces.

    Chacune de ces Normes internationales est son tour divise en parties spares.

    La prsente partie de I'ISO 8501 complte I'ISO 8501-1. Elle identifie un cer- tain nombre de degrs d'valuation visuelle (dsigns comme degrs de prparation))) aprs prparation de surface des subjectiles d'acier aprs dcapage localis des couches de peinture prcdentes. Les niveaux d'va- luation visuels dpendent des mthodes courantes de nettoyage de surface utilises avant le peinturage.

    Les clichs photographiques des degrs de prparation P Sa 2% et P Ma sont repris respectivement du supplment 1 (aot 1978) et du supplment 2 (janvier 1986) la norme DIN 55 928, partie 4.

    La prsente partie de IWO. 8501 se base sur l'exprience selon laquelle un revtement complet des couches de peinture prcdentes n'est pas toujours ncessaire. Cela est particulirement vrifi dans le cas o les travaux d'entretien sont effectus intervalles rguliers. Lorsqu'on prfre I'enlve- ment localis, les conditions suivantes doivent tre runies:

    - la couche qui demeure intacte doit contribuer utilement et durable- ment au nouveau systme anticorrosion et tre compatible avec lui;

    1 Domaine d'application

    La prsente partie de I'ISO8501 dcrit une srie de degrs de prparation des subjectiles d'acier aprs dcapage localis des couches de peinture pr- cdentes (voir article 4). Les diffrents degrs de prparation font l'objet d'une description crite avec rfrence aux clichs photographiques donns dans I'ISO 8501-1. De plus, on trouvera des clichs-types pour les degrs de prparation P Sa 2M et P Ma.

    La prsente partie de I'ISO 8501 est applicable la prparation des surfaces peindre l'aide de mthodes telles que dcapage, nettoyage la main ou la machine et dcapage la machine. La prsente partie de I'ISO 8501 tablit un rapport entre la propret du subjectile et son aspect l'il nu. Cela est suffisant dans de nombreux cas, mais pour des revtements susceptibles d'tre exposs des conditions ambiantes rigoureuses, telles que I'immer- sion dans l'eau ou la condensation permanente, il faudra veiller faire des essais pour les sels solubles et autres facteurs contaminants invisibles sur une surface apparemment propre l'aide de mthodes physiques et chimiques qui feront l'objet des diffrentes parties de I'ISO 8502. Les caractristiques de rugosit du subjectile devraient galement tre tudies en rfrence I'ISO 8503.

    2 Rfrences normatives

    Les normes suivantes contiennent des dispositions qui, par suite de la rf- rence qui est en faite, constituent des dispositions valables pour la prsente partie de I'ISO 8501. 4 Degrs de prparation

    4.1 Gnralits

    Un certain nombre de degrs de prparation est prescrit en indiquant la mthode de prparation de surface et le degr de nettoyage. Les degrs de prparation sont dfinis (voir 4.2, 4.3 et 4.4) en dcrivant par crit l'aspect de la surface aprs le nettoyage.

    Chaque degr de prparation est dsign par les lettres appropries Sa, St ou Ma qui indiquent la mthode de nettoyage utilise. La lettre P avant Sa, St ou Ma indique un enlvement seulement localis des couches prcdentes. Le chiffre qui suit ventuellement la lettre indique le degr de nettoyage de la calamine, de la rouille et des couches prcdentes.

    II convient de raliser que les diverses mthodes de nettoyage ne donnent pas des rsultats comparables. Le degr de nettoyage doit tre compatible avec le type gnrique du systme de revtement utiliser pour la sur- couche.

    Il est fait rfrence en 4.2 et 4.3 aux photographies contenues dans I'ISO 8501-1 qui sont des exemples photographiques reprsentatifs des degrs de prparation.

    NOTES

    2 Le terme matire trangre)) utilis en 4.2, 4.3 et 4.4 peut inclure des sels solubles dans l'eau et des rsidus de soudage. Ces agents contaminants ne peuvent tre totalement limins du subjectile par dcapage sec, nettoyage la main ou la machine, ou dcapage la machine; il est possible d'effectuer un dcapage sous eau.

    3 La calamine, la rouille ou une couche de peinture sont considrs comme peu adhrentes si elles peuvent tre souleves l'aide d'un couteau palette point.

    4 La reprsentation photographique annexe la prsente padie de I'ISO 8501 donne quelques exemples-types d'acier avant et aprs nettoyage localis.

    4.2 Dcapage localis de subjectiles revtus, P Sa

    La prparation de surface par dcapage localis est dsigne par les lettres UP Sa.

    Avant le dcapage, toutes les couches paisses de rouille doivent tre limi- nes par martelage. II faut galement liminer l'huile, la graisse ou les salis- sures visibles.

    Inledning

    Skyddsfrmgan hos mlningsfrg p stl pverkas i hg grad av stlytans tillstnd omedelbart fre mlning. De huvudsakliga faktorer som man vet pverkar resultatet r

    a) frekomst av rost och valshud;

    b) frekomst av ytfroreningar, inklusive salter, damm oljor och fetter;

    c) ytrhet.

    I verensstmmelse harmed har IS0 8501, IS0 8502 och IS0 8503 ut-arbetats i avsikt att ge metoder fr bestmning av dessa faktorer, medan IS0 8504 ger ledning betrffande tillgngliga frbehandlingsmetoder fr rengring av stl och om mjligheten att uppn freskrivna renhetsniver med var och en av dessa.

    Dessa internationella standarder innehller inga rekommendationer om vilka rostskyddssystem som skall anvndas fr stlytan. Inte heller innehller de ngra rekommendationer om ytkvalitetskrav i enskilda fall, trots att ytkvaliteten kan ha en avgrande betydelse fr valet av skyddsbelggning och fr dennas skyddsfrmga. Sdana rekommendationer terfinns i andra dokument ssom nationella standarder och anvisningar. Det ankommer p anvndaren av dessa internationella standarder att skerstlla att freskriven kva I itet

    De fotografiska exemplen pa frbehandlingsgraderna P Sa 2% och P Ma r tagna ur DIN 55 928, Part 4, Supplement 1 (augusti 1978) respektive Supplement 2 (januari 1986).

    Grunden fr denna del av IS0 8501 r erfarenheten att fullstndigt avlgsnande av tidigare frgskikt inte alltid r ndvndigt. Detta gller i synnerhet nr underhll grs med regelbundna intervall. Om det skall vara ngon frdel med att bara lokalt avlgsna tidigare frbskikt br fljande villkor vara uppfyllda:

    - den terstende intakta rnlningsfrgen br utgra ett anvndbart och bestende bidrag till det nya rostskyddssysternet och vara frenlig med detta;

    - vid rengring ner till underlaget av lokalt rostiga ytor, far orngivande ytors rnlningsfrg inte skadas p ett oreparerbart eller avgrande stt;

    - ptagliga kostnadsbesparingar fr underhllet skall mjliggras.

    1 Omfattning

    Denna del av IS0 8501 anger en serie frbehandlingsgrader fr stlytor efter lokalt avlgsnande av tidigare frgskikt. De olika graderna definieras genom beskrivningar i ord (se avsnitt 4) tillsammans med de representativa fotografiska exemplen, som ges i IS0 8501-1. Dessutom visas fotografiska exempel p frbehandlingsgraderna P Sa 2% och P Ma.

    Denna del av IS0 8501 r tillmplig p ytor som frbehandlats fr mlning med sdana metoder som blstring, manuell/maskinell bearbetning eller maskinslipning.

    Denna del av IS0 8501 anger stlytans renhet med ledning av dess visuella utceende. I manga fall r detta tillrckligt fr ndamlet men fr belggningar, som troligen kommer att utsttas fr korrosiva frhllanden, ssom exponering i vatten och stndig kondensation, br man vervga prov fr att faststlla mngden Isliga salter och andra osynliga froreningar pa den tillsynes rena stlytan, detta med hjlp av de fysikaliska och kemiska metoder, som behandlas i olika delar av IS0 8502. Bestmning av ytrheten br ocks vervgas med hnvisning till IS0 8503.
