Course in Depth
What will I study?
In Year 1 you will study the fundamentals of business and
management. You will gain an understanding of business
relationships and processes, management techniques and
economic markets.
Year 2 enhances your core knowledge of business and
management by allowing you to follow a number of
compulsory modules alongside options enabling you to
tailor your degree towards your future career plans
within a people management/human resource
management environment.
In Year 3 you will study a variety of contemporary
business issues with an emphasis on people
management/human resource management, in addition
to strategic management. You will also complete a piece
of independent research through a dissertation or
research-based project which enables you to work on a
relevant, agreed topic of your choice.
How will I study?
As well as preparing for and attending lectures, seminars,
tutorials and workshops, you will spend time reading and
completing coursework, including written assignments,
presentations and posters.
You will have the opportunity to develop your
employability profile through work-related learning or
participation in a graduate enterprise project. In addition,
you will undertake live client projects with organisations
or work on agreed projects with real outcomes and
impact.
How will I be assessed?
Throughout the programme there is a combination of
different forms of assessment to test intellectual
development, vocational capability and critical thinking.
Coursework involves individual and group-based
activities, case studies and problem-solving exercises.
Examinations take a variety of forms, using both seen and
unseen questions.
Who will be teaching me?
All of our staff are passionate about student learning and
development. This degree is developed by specialists in
human resource management, people management,
accountancy, e-commerce, marketing, operations
management and small and medium enterprises. The

be both appealing to consumers and effective in achieving marketing objectives, including driving sales. Web design is
the art of creating websites that are attractive and easy to use whilst achieving the marketing objectives of the
organisation. This module will provide you with an appreciation of the multiplicity of roles of a website and the range
of audiences for which one must be designed.
Language modules in French, Spanish or Mandarin, delivered at the Edge Hill Language Centre, are available to study

required of those involved in managing people continues to expand. The purpose of the module is to provide you with a
critical understanding of the changing nature of work, as well as raising your awareness of the practical strategies used

decision making process influences the choices made by those involved in deciding the strategic direction of
organisations. You will gain a critical understanding of how psychological, political, economic, social, cultural and
technological factors influence decision making and the subsequent formulation and implementation of strategy in a
range of different types of organisations.
BUS3036: StrStrategic Human Resource Managementategic Human Resource Management (20 credits)StrStrategic Human Resource Managementategic Human Resource Management critically investigates how far human relationships are central to Strategic
Human Resource Management (SHRM). The module takes a cross disciplinary approach making content as relevant to
health and education as it is to sport, events management or any other organisational setting which requires people
management. We will place the module inside the globalised context with a focus on developments in cross industry,
cross continent context where the ‘soft’ rhetoric of people as an organisation’s greatest assets often collides with the
'hard' reality that 'people' constitute only a part of an organisations strategic thinking and are used like any other asset
or resource.
BUS3037: Organisational MisbehaOrganisational Misbehaviourviour (20 credits)Organisational MisbehaOrganisational Misbehaviourviour takes a critical position in reflecting on why it seems almost inevitable for institutions
and their employees to misbehave. Topics covered will include institutional racism, policitians’ expenses, and the Libor
interest rate scandal. We will critically review such instances of personal and institutional misbehaviour to understand
why it appears so difficult for organisation’s and their employees to act in a way which is both ethical and aligns with
the moral norms we expect from our principal institutions.

you are now equipped to apply graduate level skills. The module requires the design and implementation of a research
project in an area of marketing and/or advertising and should include some element of original research, for example
interviews or a questionnaire. Support during the dissertation is given by a specified tutor although you will have
overall responsibility for managing the process.

relating to taxation, including the tax computations for individuals, sole traders, partnerships and incorporated

added tax and requires you to undertake tax planning that draws on several areas of tax legislation. You will investigate
new opportunities to reduce tax liabilities, challenge the notion of contemporary fiscal management and debate
innovative applications of tax computation and the development of tax avoidance schemes.

mechanisms and new ways of working continually emerge overturning the existing status quo. In this module, you will
be asked to explore and decide for yourselves where the big changes of the next decade will come from and how it will
impact upon the world you will graduate into.

advertising and the rationale that underpins the design and development of individual adverts. In addition, you need to
understand the place of advertising within the marketing communications techniques available to marketers, whilst

BUS3044: Entrepreneurship and InnoEntrepreneurship and Innovationvation (20 credits)Entrepreneurship and InnoEntrepreneurship and Innovationvation considers how to turn a good idea into a successful market-leading
product. Entrepreneurship and innovation go hand in hand and involve the development and release of a new product/
service or the repacking of an existing one to provide competitive advantage or even create new markets. This module
explores a variety of concepts around strategic entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship. We will examine the
difference between an idea, an invention and an innovation and provide you with a case-led understanding of the
process in action, from creation to implementation. Moreover, it provides you with a number of tools and techniques to
critically evaluate success and build on your previous experiences of work-based learning or enterprise education.
If you studied Language modules in Years 1 and 2, you may wish to study a further Language module in Year 3. This
would form an integral part of your degree in place of one of the optional modules above.
Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modules

What are my career prospects?
Upon successful completion of this degree, you will be
entitled to Associate Member status of the Chartered
Management Institute (ACMI) and you may also be
eligible for exemptions from the Chartered Institute of
Personnel and Development (CIPD).
As a BSc (Hons) Business and Management with Human
Resource Management graduate, you will be qualified to
work in areas such as human resource management,
accountancy, administration, banking, education, finance,
marketing, public sector management, retailing, small and
medium sized enterprise management, general
management, and specialist functions. Alternatively, you
may wish to undertake further study and progress to a
Masters degree.
How can I enhance myemployability?
It is useful to consider, even before you apply, how you
will spend your time while studying and make the most of
your university experience.
Optional, additional activities may be available on this
degree which could help to prepare you for a stimulating
and rewarding career. These include:

Finance
Tuition Fees
If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will be
joining this undergraduate degree in academic year
2017/18, the tuition fee will be £9,250 per
annum. Tuition fees for international students enrolling
on the programme in academic year 2017/18 are
£11,575 per annum.
The University may administer a small inflationary rise in
tuition fees, in line with Government policy, in
subsequent academic years as you progress through the
course.
Financial Support
Subject to eligibility, UK and EU students can apply for a
Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the full
cost of tuition fees. UK students may also be eligible to
apply for additional funding to help with living costs.
