As might might be expected, in thebeginning it was tough for all of us - for mymother and my father, for my three sisters andmy brother, and for me, too. The illness had leftme weak. The servants shirked me as though Iwere an evil eye personified. My sisters treatedme with care, as though I were a fragile doll, andmy mother wept. My father, who was a doctorin the public health service, was grateful that myspine had been tapped in time, for a delay in thelumbar puncture would have affected my mindor endangered my life. But he, like the rest, despaired.

A state of complete inaction thereforefollowed my blindness. In part this was due tothe immediate shock of the illness, but moreimportant still, the impasse was caused byignorance of the potentialities of a blind child, since the only blind persons my parents saw werebeggars.

My father's wide medical experience hadprepared him for an acceptance of this tragedyand he understood that any course of action mightbegin with the realization that I would be blindfor the rest of my life. My mother on the otherhand, neither would nor could convince herselfthat my sight would never return; she did not havethe medical experience of my father, and sheblamed something in her past for the tragedy....

Along with this religious counsel wascoupled a series of visits to hakinis (physicians whofollowed the Greek or Unani system of medicine). These quacko prescribed all types of drops to putin my eyes. The su rinds, which were administeredat all hours of the day and night, burned andstung my eyes; and the only soothing part of theotherwise miserable treatment was the lovingcaress of mother afterwards.

One night when my mother wasadministering these eye drops I was protestingwith loud cries, my father unexpectedly returned. He asked and I told him why I was crying. Hewas outraged.

He questioned mother as to how long thishad been going on, but she would not answer him.She was prepared to bear any outburst silentlyand the longer she stayed silent, the more irritatedmy father grew. He said harshly that hersuperstitions far surpassed those of any villagewoman he had ever known. He went on to saythat any person with the slightest considerationfor her husband would have readjusted her waysin ten years of marriage. All his efforts to breakher from her deplorable past had been in vain.He did not want his children brought up in sucha tradition.

If you think writing and speech are equaland alternative systems with little or no difference, think again! To find out for yourself, record thespeech of a fluent speaker and transcribe it. Seewhat you find!

The differences arise because they areproducts of very different kinds of communicativesituation. Speech is time-bound, dynamic andtransient (not permanent). The participants arepresent and the speaker has a specific person or

persons in mind. Writing, on the other hand, isspace-bound, static and permanent. In mostcases, the producer is not present and may not beeven aware of the addressee or reader. Severalpoints of contrast arise out of these differences.

Most importantly, the permanence ofwriting allows repeated readings and analysis. Itpromotes the development of careful organizationof thoughts and arguments and accuate selectionof content, language and structures. The layout, punctuation, sentences and paragraphs indicatethe organization clearly

By contrast, the spontaneity and rapidity ofspeech reduces the chance of complexpreplanning, and promotes features that assistspeakers to 'think standing up': constructions arelooser; repetitions are frequent; and filler phrasessuch as 'you know', 'let me see', 'well . . . umm',etc., are used. Pauses and intonation (rise andfall of voice) are used to divide utterances intoparts.

Written language displays several uniquefeatures such as punctuation, capitalization, spatial organization, colour, font size, typeface, etc. Speech can use pause, stress, loudness anddifferent intonation patterns. Writers can useinnovative ways to indicate these too.

In elaborating and indicating context, speech is more economic because it allowspointing and other extra-linguistic methods suchas 'This one', 'No, no, not that . . . the next turn','over there', etc. In writing, the context has to bespecified in detail to avoid confusion.
