Expectations of a Midwife

• Caring for women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth

• Working and collaborating with others to ensure excellent care for women during pregnancy, labour, their babies & beyond

What do we mean by Degree Level?

As a degree midwife you will need to develop and demonstrate skills in:

• Critical analysis

• Decision making

• Leadership and management

• Clinical judgement

Shortened Programme (18 months)

• 1st 6 months – focus is on study skills and on normal midwifery

• 2nd 6 months – Care of complex needs of mother and baby

• 3rd 6 months – focus is on dealing with emergencies and deviations from normal

• Final 12 week consolidation of clinical midwifery practice

Programme Requirements

• Set by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC)

• Currently programme is 50% theory and 50% practice

• 78 week programme = 37.5 hours per week

• All sickness or absence must be made up in order to fulfil the NMC requirement

• Ten days or more sickness/absence in any one year could lead to discontinuation or deferral

• A poor sickness/absence record could have implications for future employment – even if you have made up all the time owed

Salary

• NHS starting salaries for graduates with midwifery degrees start on over £21,388 a year with opportunity to earn more with overtime and other additional payments, which compares very well with other public sector jobs.

• The highest paid NHS nurses/midwives can earn up to £97,500 as nurse consultants or consultant midwives or directors of nursing/midwifery
