As per the paper read (2) above the meeting of the Faculty of medicine held on 15.10.2009 had approved the above draft prepared by the Board of Studies in Nursing (UG) with the following modifications. Eligibility for admission: Clause III – stands modified as “Minimum 1 year experience as Staff Nurse in a hospital (with 150 beds)/ Govt. Hospitals/Community Health Setting after registering with any State Nursing Council. Candidates should possess Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council registration at the time of application. The upper age limit for joining the course is 45 years”. The Faculty also decided to implement the regulations Scheme and Syllabus for Post Basic B.Sc Nursing Course from 2010 admission onwards. As per paper read (3) above the decision of the Faculty of Medicine was approved by the Academic Council meeting held on 21.11.2009. O R D E R

As per paper read (1) above, the meeting of the Board of Studies in Nursing (UG)

held on 26.03.2009 had framed the draft, regulations, Scheme and Syllabus for Post Basic

BSc Nursing Course in lieu with the syllabus approved by Indian Nursing Council, to be

implemented with effect from 2009 admission.

As per the paper read (2) above the meeting of the Faculty of medicine held on

15.10.2009 had approved the above draft prepared by the Board of Studies in Nursing

(UG) with the following modifications.

Eligibility for admission: Clause III – stands modified as “Minimum 1 year

experience as Staff Nurse in a hospital (with 150 beds)/ Govt. Hospitals/Community

Health Setting after registering with any State Nursing Council. Candidates should

possess Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council registration at the time of application. The

upper age limit for joining the course is 45 years”.

The Faculty also decided to implement the regulations Scheme and Syllabus for Post

Basic B.Sc Nursing Course from 2010 admission onwards.

As per paper read (3) above the decision of the Faculty of Medicine was approved by

the Academic Council meeting held on 21.11.2009.

Sanction has therefore been accorded to implement the draft regulations, scheme and

syllabus for Post Basic BSc Nursing course framed by the Board of Studies in Nursing

(UG) held on 26.03.2009 in lieu with the Indian Nursing Council approved syllabus and

approved by the Faculty of Medicine and Academic Council meetings held on

15.10.2009 and 21.11.2009 respectively; (copy of the syllabus appended) with effect

from 2010 admission onwards.

The Post Basic B.Sc degree course in Nursing is a two year course of study

in a College of Nursing affiliated to University of Calicut. The main purpose of

this programme is to upgrade the skills and competencies of the diploma (GNM)

nurses and there by enable them to assume the role of clinical nurse, teacher,

supervisor and manager in hospital/community/educational settings.

Objectives

On completion of B.Sc Nursing (Post – Basic) degree programme the

graduates will be able to:

� Assess health status, identify nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate

nursing care for patients/clients that contribute to health of individuals,

families and communities.

� Demonstrate competency in techniques of nursing based on concepts and

principles from selected areas of nursing, physical, biological and

behavioural sciences.

� Participate as members of health team in the promotive, preventive,

curative and restorative health care delivery system of the country.

� Demonstrate skills in communication and interpersonal relationship.

� Demonstrate leadership qualities and decision – making abilities in various

situations.

� Demonstrate skills in teaching to individuals and groups in

clinical/community health settings.

� Demonstrate managerial skills in various health care settings.

� Practice ethical values in their personal and professional life.

� Participate in research activities and utilized research findings in improving

nursing practice.

� Function as an effective teacher in a School/College of Nursing

� Recognize the need for continued learning for their personal and

professional development.

Candidates for admission to Post Basic B.Sc Nursing degree course in

nursing shall be required to have

I. Passed Higher Secondary or 10+2 examinations with Physics,

Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects with aggregate of 45% of

marks, or other equivalent examination approved by the University of

Calicut.

II. Passed the General Nursing & Midwifery examination conducted by the

state Nursing Councils /examining boards recognized by INC with 55%

aggregate marks.

III. Minimum 1 year experience as Staff Nurse in a hospital (with 150

beds)/ Government Hospitals/ Community Health setting after

registering with any State Nursing Council. Candidates should possess

Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council registration at the time of

application. The upper age limit for joining the course is 45 years.

Selection

Selection of candidates shall be on the basis of the marks obtained for

qualifying examination (GNM) on the basis of the rank obtained in the entrance

examination conducted by a competent authority.

For SC/ST and SEBC candidates, reservation rules shall be observed while

admitting students in Merit Quota as per the prospectus issued by Govt. of Kerala

for admission to professional courses.

• All Nursing Papers of 3 hours duration with Practical and

viva examinations will only have separate sections i.e

Section A and Section B.

• For I year Post Basic B.Sc(N) examination:-

1. Paper I-Nursing Foundations and Paper IV Microbiology will not

have separate sections

2. Nutrition and Biochemistry Question paper will consist of Section

A-Nutrition 45 marks and Section B Biochemistry 30 marks

3. Psychology and Sociology Question paper will consist of Section

A-Psychology 45 marks and Section B Sociology 30 marks

• For II year Post Basic B.Sc(N) examination:-

1. Paper -IV. Nursing Education and Paper- V Nursing

Administration will not have separate sections

2. For paper VI- Nursing Research and Statistics, Nursing Research

will consist of Section A -50 marks and Statistics Section B -25

marks.

Duration The duration of the course is 2 years with University Examination

conducted annually.

Examination Regulations: 1. University examinations (Regular and Supplementary) are conducted twice in

a year.

2. Candidate shall present themselves for all parts of the examinations at their

first appearance.

3. Candidates who have undergone the prescribed course study of the academic

year only can appear for the Examination. No candidate shall be admitted to

any part of the examination unless he/she has secured a minimum of 80%

attendance both in theory as well as practical, in each subject.

4. Candidates who secure 50% or above marks in all the subjects except English

and Computer Science shall be declared to have passed the examination in

those subjects. Candidates shall secure 50% or above marks in English,

Computer Science to pass in those subjects.

5. Candidates who pass all the parts of the examination in the first chance of

appearing only will be ranked in the order of proficiency based on the total

aggregate marks obtained. They shall be arranged in two classes – First Class

and Second class. All those who have secured 65% or above of the aggregate

marks shall be declared to have passed the examination in first class and all

those who have secured less than 65% shall be included in the 2nd class.

Candidates who have secured 75% or above marks in any subject shall be

declared to have distinction in that subject. Candidates who pass the

examination at subsequent appearance shall be ranked only in second class.

6. Candidates who fail in any paper or in the whole Examination may appear for

that paper or part or whole exam and pass the subsequent examination.

7. However a candidate who has failed in the 1st B.Sc Nursing examination shall

continue the course through the 2nd year. No candidate shall be admitted to the

Final B.Sc Nursing examination, unless he/she has passed the first year

examination.

NURSING FOUNDATION

COURSE DESDRIPTION

This course will help students to develop an understanding of nursing as a

profession, the philosophy, objectives, theories and process of nursing in various

clinical settings. The purpose of the course is to orient to the current concepts

involved in the practice of nursing and developments in the nursing profession.

This course is designed to provide the students with a wide knowledge of

nutrition and dietetics in Indian setting, so that the practice of teaching optimum

and realistic dietary planning can become an integral part of nursing practice.

• Precautions for handling specimens for enzyme estimation

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to reorient the students to the fundamentals of

Microbiology and its various sub- divisions. It provides opportunities to gain skill

in handling and use of microscope for identifying various micro-organisms. It also

provides opportunities for safe handling of materials containing harmful bacteria

and methods of destroying micro organisms.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course the student will

1. Identifies common disease producing micro-organisms.

2. Explain the basic principles of microbiology and their significance in health and

disease

3. Demonstrate skill in handling specimens.

PRACTICAL

Each student will practice in the laboratory as indicated in each unit of the course;

outline. While giving nursing care in the wards they will practice collection and

processing of specimens, prevention and control of hospital infections,

sterilization, immunization chemotherapy and maintenance of personal and

environmental hygiene. Observation visit to incinerator, posting in CSSD and

infection control department.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to reorient and widen the student’s knowledge of

fundamentals of psychology. The student is offered an opportunity to apply the

theoretical concepts in the clinical setting and thereby understand the

psychodynamics of patient behaviour. This course clinical setting and thereby

understand the psychodynamics of patient would also help the student to develop

an insight into her own behaviour.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the student will

I. Apply psychological principles while performing nursing functions.

II. Distinguish the psychological processes during health and sickness.

III. Analyze own behaviour patterns.

IV. Tabulate the psychological needs of the patients for planning nursing can
