    SPECIAL SCHOOL AND ESHV

    Ganton Special School and the Education Servicefor Hearing and Vision (ESHV) will be co-located onthe same site to create the new West Hull CommunityLearning Village.

    For those of you who dontknow, the name Sirius waschosen by Year7 pupil DezGreenwoodas it is thebrightest star inthe night sky.

    BSF ROUNDUP:

    TILBURY / BETHUNE / GANTON:

    New school, new vision, new opportunities.Developing new schools and community facilities in West Hull.

    Plans to replace Tilbury Primary School and Bethune Park PrimarySchool with a brand new school on Burnham Road were approved on

    9th September by members of the City Councils Cabinet.

    This decision will see around 10m invested in a new primary school toaccommodate all 480 pupils currently attending the two existing primaryschools including children with a hearing impairment and places for theprimary-aged department of Ganton Special School. The proposals fallunder the Primary Capital Programme that will see 65million invested inprimary schools across the city.

    Work has already started with parents, residents, staff, governors,children and young people to shape the designs for the new schoolbuilding. The new primary school, alongside the new Sirius Academy,Ganton Special School (secondary department) and Education Servicefor Hearing and Vision (ESHV) will form the West Hull CommunityLearning Village, creating new opportunities for local people.

    ARCHBISHOP SENTAMUACADEMY:

    Plans for a new academy buildingnext to the Freedom Centre willsoon be unveiled.

    ASHWELL PUPIL REFERRAL UNIT:

    Staff and pupils at Ashwell, a pupil referral unitin east Hull are cooking up a storm after theopening of their new state-of-the-art kitchenlearning zone, jointly funded by the school andBSF.

    WINIFRED HOLTBY /TWEENDYKES:

    Plans for a new (co-located)Winifred Holtby andTweendykes school will soon beunveiled

    KELVIN HALL:Design work is already underwayfor a new Kelvin Hall School.

    Selecting our new Partners: After a year-long competition, BSF is about to select either Balfour Beatty or Esteem to be our new partners, to design and build all the remaining BSF schools. We hope to announce the winner on 4th November 2009!

    On Wednesday 9thSeptember, pupilsfrom Sir Henry Cooper

    joined the BSF Teamand local residents atthe Guildhall to attendPlanning Committee.They wanted to fnd

    out whether the outline

    planning application tobuild a new Academyon Princess ElizabethPlaying Fields inNorthern Area would beapproved.

    In total, 21 people spoke insupport of the application,including Sir Henry CooperHead Girl Hollie Crooks (15)and Head Boy Alex Carter(15.)

    After a three hour debate,Planning Committee votedin favour of the application.

    Hollie said The decisionhas taken a long time butit was worth it in the endbecause this will beneftour community.

    Alex addedWe werespeaking on behalf ofall pupils at Sir HenryCooper School becausethe school wont justbe for us but the wholecommunity with topsport facilities thateveryone will be able touse.

    WE WERE THERE TO SUPPORT HOLLie AND ALEXWHEN THEY SPOKE. IT WAS REALLY NERVE

    RACKING. MANY PEOPLE HAD IDEAS AND POINTS,

    BUT IN THE END, THE IDEA OF THE NEW ACADEMY

    WAS ACCEPTED. Michael White, Year 9

    I UNDERSTAND WHAT THE OBJECTORS ARESAYING BUT I THINK AN ACADEMY WOULD BE

    A GOOD IDEA, AS IT WOULD HAVE A wider

    WE MOVED INTO THE COUNCIL CHAMBER, WHEREAFTER A LONG TIME AND A LOT OF DEBATING,

    THE FINAL DECISION WAS THAT THE SCHOOL WILL

    GCSE RESULTS; THE CITY'S BEST EVER!7% UP ON LAST YEAR with Five or more A*-C PASSES INCLUDING ENGLISH ANDMATHS!

    On 27 August, the citycelebrated its best everGCSE results with over37 per cent of pupilsachieving fve or more

    A*-C GCSEs, includingEnglish and maths. This

    is an increase of morethan seven per centfrom last year.

    Head teachers, pupilsand parents were invitedto a celebration event atthe Guildhall, along withthe Deputy Lord Mayor,Cllr Dave Gemmell,Nigel Richardson,Judith Harwood and Cllr

    Christine Randall, PortfolioHolder for Education andChildrens Services.

    A new lm was premieredwhich featured Year 11pupils preparing for theirexams and attending theirProm nights; followedby speeches, photoopportunities and a buffetlunch.

    Speaking at the eventCharlotte, who achieved8Bs and 7Cs, said that herresults were far better thanshe could have dreamedof and she was over themoon! She will now takeA-Levels at WilberforceCollege and is hoping to goto University.

    Fiona was thrilled aftergaining 1A, 2Bs and 8Cs and is still waiting forthe results of her BTECapprenticeship in Businessand Administration. Fionais also taking A-Levels atWilberforce College andthen planning to go toUniversity.

    Both girls are studentsat Archbishop SentamuAcademy, which has beenopen for a year now, andhad very positive thingsto say about the manychanges at the school.They both agreed thatlessons had improved andthey liked the new uniformand said it made them feel

    proud to be a student atthe Academy. They saidthat students and staffworked better togetherand that it felt like a realcommunity.

    Charlotte said that shehad beneted from mathsintervention classes andfelt that without them shewouldnt have achieved apass in maths. She alsosaid that students sat lotsof practice papers and this

    really helped her to getover the fear she had ofexams.

    Chris Mulqueen (VicePrincipal) added:

    Obviously the Academyhas seen great changesthroughout the year.We have been able

    to provide resourcesspecifcally tailored tomeet the needs of ourstudents. Reduced classsizes, 3D ICT packagesand interventionprogrammes havehad a huge impacton the learning of ourstudents. There is nowa real awareness ofachievement in ourstudents and theirambition to succeed isclear.

    Hull pupil, Wesley Trowell (16),is the face of See me, notthe chair; a poster campaignled by a group of pupils ofEndeavour High School.

    Supported by the ACE projectand working with the nationalcharity SCOPE, the grouphas designed a series of threeposters highlighting three coremessages:

    See me, not the chair.

    Enable me, dont disable me.

    Dont ask Others, Ask me!

    CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE:Wesley joined a group of 30pupils from schools acrossthe city who attended aBSF Learning Partnershipevent at the end of lastterm.

    At the event, held in theFreedom Centre on PrestonRoad, the group of youngpeople heard from bothBalfour Beatty and Esteem,the two companies tryingto win the main contractfor the 465million BSFscheme in Hull.

    Reecting on his day withthe bidders and the BSFteam, Wesley had thefollowing comments:

    This is an exciting timefor Hull, and a greatopportunity to createdecent schools that we

    want to go to. Im reallypleased to have beeninvolved in this fantasticchance to change Hullfor the better!

    I spoke to bothcompanies about howimportant it was for

    schools to have widecorridors and be fullyaccessible for youngpeople with disabilities.Both were reallyenthusiastic about theproject and Hull!

    The feedback providedby children and youngpeople at the event is partof a wider programmeof activities to make sureyoung people are at theheart of the BSF project.

    WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING IN HULL?FREEDOM FESTIVAL/CLIPPER: 12TH-13TH SEPTEMBER 2009

    new BSF school designs.

    Around 100,000 peoplevisited Hull on the 12thand 13th September forthe hugely successfulFreedom Festival.

    This unique celebrationof Freedom saw the citycome to life with liveperformances of chart-topping music, internationalart installations, colourfuldance displays and the

    awesome sight of a eet ofClipper yachts beginningtheir round-the-worldjourney.

    The free three-dayextravaganza included arange of fantastic musicacts - including PeterAndre, The Saturdays,Alesha Dixon, Florenceand the Machine and JLSwho performed on three

    main stages around the citycentre over the weekend.Visitors with youngchildren could even headto the beach as arc, theindependent organisationthat promotes and fostersquality in architecture andpublic space, had createdits very own beach area;complete with sandcastlearchitecture and seasidememory activities.

    The beach was verypopular, especially as thesun shone all day andthe children could makesandcastles and cool offwith an ice-cream. TheBSF team was on handto show people the newdesigns of Sirius Academyand Ganton Special Schooland to hand out essentialsandcastle ags!
