Compact fire protection knowledge. The new fire protection guide

Nowadays, fire protection presentsmany planners and installation en-gineers of building equipment withalmost insurmountable obstacles.Installations run like networksthrough complex building struc-tures.

The art of the planner is to har-monise the various networks, suchas supply and disposal, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning,with the electrical installation. Thatin itself is difficult. In addition, thethought of building safety hasbeen at the forefront for severalyears now. The sensitivity towardsfire protection in buildings is grow-ing.

As soon as the first step towardsfire protection planning has beencompleted, the appropriate sys-tems and components are in-stalled. Here, too, installation engi-neers are confronted with require-ments which cannot be implement-ed without further work.

After erection, the fire protectionbuilding equipment must be readyfor acceptance. All the installationsmust be executed properly and theappropriate fire protection proofsmust be available.

In the fire protection guide, wewish to explain the interconnec-tions of fire protection in technicalbuilding equipment. Perhaps you will find some newaspects which can help you in theplanning or implementation of fireprotection systems.

Selection aid, insulation in light-duty partitions

This overview is intended to helpyou choose the suitable insulationsystem for the installations madein light-duty partitions with mois-ture resistance. The subconstruc-tion of the light-duty partitions isusually made of metal stands andbolts, which are surrounded on

each side by fire protection plates, fastened in two layers. Light-dutypartitions are not supporting com-ponents, meaning that fire protec-tion fastening, e.g. for functionmaintenance, cannot be imple-mented.

    System description, PYROMIX® mortar insulation

Stir the mortar with water toachieve the desired consistency

Apply mortar to the opening, uselining as necessary

Use approved section insulationfor metal pipes

Section insulation should also beapplied to steel electrical installa-tion pipes

Mount pipe sleeves for com-bustible pipes on both sides of thewall

Combination insulation for variousstructures with labelling

PYROMIX® is a special mortar, free of mineral fibres, for the cre-ation of cable and combinationinsulation. Depending on theamount of water added, the fin-ished compound can be appliedto the openings by hand, withpumps or with presses. The highlevel of substrate adhesion makelining unnecessary for small in-sulation sizes. A porous consis-tency makes retroinstallationeasy.

System benefits• Combination of multiple installations possible• Many approved section insulations, even Armaflex or Foamglas• Free of mineral fibres• Hollow shaft conductors permitted• Good substrate adhesion• Can even be used with small component thicknesses• Required consistency can be achieved by adding water• Easy retroinstallation

Fix pipe sleeves for combustiblepipes with threaded rods on bothsides

Combination insulation for variousstructures with labelling

Secure soft insulation in ceilingsagainst footfall

OBO PYROPLATE® Fibre is amineral fibre or soft insulation. The core of the system is themineral fibre plate coated with amoisture-resistant ablation coat-ing. When there is a fire, the fireprotection coating forms an insu-lating carbon foam. Together withthe mineral fibre plates, this pro-vides effective prevention of thespread of fire and smoke. Ac-cording to the construction ap-proval, in addition to the cables, pipes made of steel, copper orvarious plastics may also be runthrough the same insulation. Therefore, the OBO PYROPLATE®Fibre is combination insulationfor various structures. For pipeli-nes, additional fire protectionmeasures (section insulation andpipe sleeves) are required.

System benefits• Combination of multiple installations possible• Many approved section insulations• Low insulation thickness - "Plate to plate"• Pre-coated plate with final coating is visually tidy• Moisture-resistant coating• Easy retroinstallation

Thread-ed rods are mounted using thepush-through method in dry par-tition walls. In case of fire, the fire protectionmaterial inserted within the sealfoams up after a few minutes un-der high pressure, closing thesoft plastic pipes. This safely pre-vents the spread of fire andsmoke, should a fire occur. The PYROCOMB® pipe sleevesmay only be used to insulateplastic pipes in the PYROMIX®and PYROPLATE® Fibre systems.

System benefits• Many approved pipe materials• Sloping penetration (up to 39°) possible• Noise insulation on pipes need not be removed• Slender pipe sleeve structure• The size of the pipe sleeve may be three levels greater than the di-

ameter of the run-through pipe• Versatile application in various systems

Mineral wool with melting point ≥1,000 °C to plug the opening

2 cm-deep closure of the surfaceson both sides with the DSX insula-tion layer creator

    Labelling of the small insulation

The PYROMIX® Screed small in-sulation only consists of twocomponents: OBO's insulationcreating material, type DSX, andthe MIW mineral wool. The non-combustible mineral wool has amelting point ≥ 1,000 °C andserves as a basis for the cable in-sulation. When the opening hasbeen plugged, both sides of theopening are sealed with the DSXinsulation creator. If there is a fire, the filler foamsup, preventing penetration by fireand smoke. The foaming actionalso draws heat from the cables, thus considerably reducing thetransfer of heat via the coppercores.

System benefits• Very simple assembly• Only two components required• Low-cost, approved components• In cartridges or in a bucket• Components can be used in other systems• Fulfils the requirements of the MLAR regarding so-called aids

System description, individual cables according to MLAR with insulatinglayer forming agent

DSX insulation layer creator, suit-able for full-wall ring gap closure insolid walls and ceilings

With light-duty partitions, filling thedouble plates to both sides is suffi-cient

The OBO insulation layer cre-ation material, type DSX, can beused to fill drill holes for penetra-tions with a single cable or multi-ple cables of a small cross-sec-tion, routed next to each other, through walls and ceilings mark-ing the end of fire sections, in ac-cordance with the cable systemsdirective. The ring gap around the cablemust be completely closed withfire protection filler. If there is afire, the filler foams up, prevent-ing penetration by fire andsmoke. The foaming action alsodraws heat from the cables, thusconsiderably reducing the trans-fer of heat via the copper cores.

System description, mesh cable tray GR-Magic®

Single-layer ceiling mountingabove suspended fire protectionceiling

Two-layer ceiling mounting abovesuspended fire protection ceiling

Required minimum spacing to thefire protection ceiling

Clamp fastening for high load ca-pacities

    Screwless joint connection

The mechanical stability of therouting system with GR-Magic®mesh cable trays in case of firehas been proved for fire loads of30 minutes. The routing system consists ofthe mounting rails MS21 and/orMS41 in a pendulum suspensionfrom the ceiling. A two-layer ar-rangement of the mesh cabletrays up to a width of 400 mm ispossible, providing that the ap-proved tensile stress in thethreaded rods is maintained incase of fire.Due to the varying deformationsin case of fire, select the meshcable trays according to thespace available to the false ceil-ing. These characteristic defor-mation values of the appropriatemesh cable trays are document-ed appropriately.

System benefits• Tested routing system• Space-saving mounting under the ceiling• Two-layer mounting• Proof of minimum spacing to the fire protection ceiling• Various widths of the mesh cable tray
