Introduction

Gauging Your Client Relationships: Measure What Matters Profitability. Market share. Growth. Revenue. Law firms track their performance against any number of metrics, but at the heart of each of these is one vital component: client relationships.

Business success demands systematically acquiring, cultivating, and retaining client relationships.

The nature of a firm’s client relationships has proven financial impact:

y 36.9% of law firm revenue stems from 25 key clients

y A single, high-quality client relationship accounts for 7.1% of annual billings

y Law firms with the absolute best client relationships enjoy:

– 19.5% rate premiums

– 35.6% greater revenue

In the BTI Client Relationship Scorecard, corporate counsel gauge the strength of their current relationships with law firms—by name—to provide the most accurate and objective measure of a law firm’s breadth and strength of client relationships.

Based on more than 500 in-depth interviews with corporate counsel at Fortune 1000 and large organizations, BTI’s research reveals more than 48.1% of corporate counsel replaced one of their primary law firms within the past year. The BTI Client Relationship Scorecard highlights:

y 23 firms stand above all others with the largest number of the best and most healthy client relationships

– 60 law firms are positioned to unseat these market leaders

y 5 components drive the most successful relationships:

– Strong primary stature with clients

– Go-to firm status

– Client investment in the relationship—unprompted client recommendations

– Top-of-mind client endorsements

– Clientopia®—the gold standard in measuring client relationships

y Only 22% of clients are in a state of Clientopia with their top clients

y Law firms with the best client relationships for over 15 key industries

BTI assesses the nature and strength of client relationships for nearly 400 law firms and provides the tools to create a relationship action plan and targeted blueprint for growth based on your client relationships.

The BTI Client Relationship Scorecard is your key to unlock the potential of your relationships.

Introduction

Measuring the Quantity—and Quality—of Client Relationships The BTI Client Relationship Scorecard evaluates law firm performance through the eyes of the client. No law firms influence the results, submit nominations or provide client names to include in the research process. The research is independent and unbiased. The client—the only true judge of a relationship’s strength—solely drives BTI’s analysis of law firms with the strongest, most abundant client relationships.

BTI’s scoring system relies on 6 key variables:

y Positioning with clients

1. Are you the primary—first and most important—law firm a client uses?

2. Are you secondary—important but not at the top of the list?

3. Go-to status—do you have it?

y Recommendation rates: The strength of a law firm’s relationship with clients

4. Does your client recommend you first—above all other law firms?

5. How frequently is your firm recommended to others—in an unprompted manner?

y Clientopia: The gold standard in client relationships

6. Are you both the leading primary firm and the first firm recommended in an unprompted manner by clients?

BTI Client Relationship Scorecard

BTI’s exclusive research with more than 3,700 corporate counsel and the most influential buyers of legal services at the world’s largest organizations reveals just 3 components provide an accurate gauge to assess the nature and strength of client relationships:

1. Primary Relationships: The horizontal, or x-axis, plots the number of primary relationships a law firm enjoys. Firms that land on the right side of the chart enjoy an above-average number of primary relationships with clients. Firms on the left side of the chart exhibit fewer primary relationships.

2. Client Recommendations: The vertical, or y-axis, gauges the quality of a law firm’s relationships—as measured by the client. Law firms receiving more recommendations from clients are higher on the chart.

3. Clientopia: The final component used to measure the strength of client relationships is a firm’s Clientopia rate. Clientopia is the ideal state of a client relationship where a law firm is both the leading primary provider and first firm recommended to peers. Clientopia rates are used to separate firms in the upper-right quadrant into one of the following key categories: BTI Power Elite or Power Players.
