“I’m not the most proactive writer. My last film ideas have been prompted by a class which forced me to write short stories, and I developed a script from these. I like the freedom of short story writing and want to continue them as my first steps in the filmmaking process. I think any similarities between myself and my characters are done by accident, they’re usually little quirks or mannerisms that help layer the characters. This association I have with the characters often helps in the directing of the actors as my understanding of the material is stronger as a result.”

“Making films is really self-indulgent, so you have to be careful to keep your ego in check...”

“I am fortunate to be surrounded by talented friends, and my last few collaborative attempts have been terrific experiences. Saying this, I am a bit of control freak and know that if I didn't trust the people I was working with 100%, I would try and take over the project. Making films is really self-indulgent, so you have to be careful to keep your ego in check, which is why I think the collaborative process is crucial to ensure that some of your vision is shared amongst a cohort.”

“I ensure that I storyboard every shot for my films during pre-production, I believe this is not just crucial to the planning stage but also a chance to stretch your creativity early in the process. I have fun working with my cinematographer, Wilson Huang, to find interesting images and visual intrigue whenever we can. I’m often surprised by the lack of effort some filmmakers take to their visual design, hence why I put such an emphasis on the process. With Wilson, we make sure that we never settle on a shot until both of us are happy with the frame. Visual pride is a nice thing to have I think.”

“I always wanted to be a filmmaker ever since I was little, I just didn’t really properly consider pursuing it until about year 10 since I always saw it as the type of career you only dream about, like being a rockstar or an astronaut, the type of career that everyonewants do as a kid before growing up and getting a real job,but I figured that someone has to do it or else there wouldn’t be concerts or spaceships.”

“My ultimate goal was always to be a film director, and I thought that the best way to be a director is to under-stand every single department and role in production, so that I’d actually know how to direct each depart-ment. I just happened to fall into sound first because my first every gig was being the sound recordist for a VCA masters documentary. I Had a bit of experience doing it after that, and a few people asked me to do it for their projects. I moved away from it eventually because there was too much downtime, and frankly, it was fucking boring. I found myself helping out in lighting depart-ment in between takes, and had more fun and satisfac-tion doing that kind of work.”

“I Have always wanted to be a director, and still want to be one. I just never really got the chance to direct my own stuff in previous years because I ended up being too busy working on other peoples projects, which was amazing, but my intentions have always been to direct. I thought it would be hard to jump into directing and hand off the camera to someone else, but I’ve found it pretty easy. I think it’s because the project is so big and has so many moving parts, and so much to do and con-sider, I just don’t have time to worry about that stuff. I also trust my DOP, Rod, a great deal, and know that I don’t have to worry about camera and lighting because I know that it’s in good hands. ”

“I prefer lighting because its more hands on and you get the instant gratification of seeing the end product of your hard work, it’s the perfect balance of creativity and technical skill...”
