The three prizes to be contended for are $23, $15, and $1(1, in money. The best point for witnessing the race from the shore will be the beach, near the round-house, below the foot of Genesee street. IN THE EVENING there will be no fire-works, the burning of St. John’s Church last year having set the minds of the people against rockets, Ac.; but there will be plenty of fun. The Acad emy of Music will of course be filled. Van Amburgh’s Menagerie looks as well at night as by day, the festival at the Rink will be very attractive, and oomicalitiea will be the order of the hour at W ild’s Varieties. The Rink.— A large ffhd fashionable au dience attended this popular institution Saturday evening, drawn thither by the attractions of roller skating and the very fine music rendered by the Rink orchestra, ■katinft was indulged is, by a large of ladies and gentlemen, and we notice a decided improvement in the grace ful art. Indeed, it is really surprising to see how easily a lady or gent will glide along after half an hour’s practice, ami it seems to be getting more and more popular. About half-past eight o’clock Mr. Smith, of New York, and member of the National Roller Skating Association, appeared and gave an exhibition of hia skill. He executes all the movements whieh ana be aoo* plashed en ice m sphndij style, and those who have not-eeen him wiU he astonished, na we — teinly were, to ass 'ths splendid proficiency, graceful aad startling me moats with which hs favored ths audience. To-day the rink is given up to the feeti- val and concert of the Grand Army of the Republic, which cannot fail to be a great Six Juror’s Crawl Through a Small Window.— Laat Saturday there was a civil suit tried before Justice 1-amptnan. 'Hie evidence was all taken, the lawyers con cluded their harangues, and the caau was given to the jury, the Court and attendants retiring to allow them time to consider upon their verdict. Ttffe constable did not remain in tiie room with them, and so the Court looked the door. After a while of the interested parties inquired through the key-faole and ascertained that the jury had agreed. Th» Justice waa found, but the k*y was not, and nobody could tell where it waa placed. Tbe door eould not be opened. The nimtiahls had gone off tc tigh. Here was a dilemma. Six thirsty jurors—most of them professional fastened in a small room with nothing to do. One of the six was an Justice, full of wiee saws, but without a doorkey to tit They were all anxious to get out, but how, was the question. A ladder would reach the pavement, but that would expose their situation; a hole might be through the floor, but that would be expensive. A t last tho ex-Justice espied a small ventilating window above the door. This was reached by means of a table, and ia a few moments the outsiders were aston iahed to see the head of tbe bulky jury coming through the narrow space six feet above the floor. It was tight squeeze, but with thu kind assistanc*- of those at the rear and those in front the feat was at last accomplished, and the ex ’squire was master of the situation. The remaining jurors being of lesser mould crowded ont without much difficulty. The wicked constable returned with one fish just in time to see the last man drop from the window. The }*erformance of the jury caused considerable fun among the spec tators, and will bo put on record as some thing remarkable in the history of our Jus tice Courts. A Frenchman wtth a Baby.— Saturday evening about eight, a Frenchman named Daveau was sitting in the Court House Park, when a woman with a baby in her arms approached and asked him to hold it for a few moments as she wished to go and purchase a new bonnet. I>avean asked why she did not take the infant with hor, when she replied that it nuight cry. She finally prevailed upon the good-natured man to keep her charge and away she went. A baby is always an object of interest, and that baby became particularly so. Da veau took good care of it—dandled it upon his knee, carried it in his arms and talked to it like a father. Time wore away but the female did not return. The baby grew nervous, and cried; Daveau grew nervous and didn’t know wbht to do. He expected she would come every moment A t last he went to a saloon, (iailcd for lager and tried that; but tho baby would not imbibe the bitter stuff; nor did wine have the desired effect. The distracted man went back to the park, and thouga there were plenty of women present, ho could not find the own er of his burden. The cri* s of the baby brought a crowd of people together, many of whom were women. Daveau was in an awful piekle and acted like a crazy man. He told how tha thing happened, and it was decided that he had been imposed upon. A number of women offered to take the baby home with them, but to this thu Frenchman would not agree for fear that the mother might call upon him; nor did he dare take the child home because it blight make trouble in his family. And so he walked up and down Main street looking for the strange p o m an, followed by a crowd, among who-n were two women, botli endeavoring to obtain possession of the baby. At half-past nine. Officer Delaney met the baby party-^sear the Opera House, and after inquiring into the cause of the com motion, he conducted them to the station house, the two would-be nurses also going along in hopes of securing that baby. The affair created considerable excite ment at tbe statioc, and Officer Brooks wa* detailed to hunt up the mother. After awhile the officer returned, and reported that he had found her in the person of one Mrs. Nolan, in the Piper Block. Wooden Pavements.— Since publish ing an article a few days since the importance of tho discovery of some process for preserving wood from de cay for paving blocks, we have been shown a specimen in the form of a paving block, treated by a new process recently discov ered and patented by Doctor Hadley, Chae. E. Clarke and John C. Clifford, of this city. The specimen alluded to is a pine block of suitable dimensions for paving blocks. Tfiu air and moisture in the wood have evidently been thoroughly expelled and their place perfectly filled with gas tar distillate. The block is dry, hard, tough and of equal weight with water-soaked wood. In fact, its grav ity is equal to that of water. The process, we are told, is simple and consists substan tially in subjecting the wood, either dry and seasoned, or green and water-soaked, to a steam bath of a sufficient degree of heat to convert the sap or moisture in the wood into vapor. The effect of this is to expel the air and moisture from the wood, soften its tissues aad fibres and open its pores. W hile Ia this condition the saturating ma terial is applied, completely filling the pores aad tissues of the wood. The satu rating material may oonsist of any kind of oleagmioos or saline substance, carbonic acid, etc., ia short any solid or any liquid of anti-septic properties, or say mixture of solids aad liquids which can be brought to the liquid fana. W s are informed that it hy this process that two of saturating fluids may be put into a cubic foot of wood, which is equal to 201 pounds. Hard water, soaked wood weighs about 02 pounds to tbe cubic foot. One-third of this weight consists of water. By this prsosss the water may be expelled, aad its plaee filled with the pre serving fluid. Wood thus filled with any kind of indestructible oils or salines will last for ages. This treatment is useful for the preservation of wood from decay for almost any purpose, such, for instance, as railroad ties, piles, telegraph poles, etc. VVe are informed that it is the intention of the patentees of this invention to bring it into use as soon as practicable, and we hope tiiat they may meet with success equal to the merit that it claims.
