At the height of winterand cabin fever, thisweekend rolls around togive us ways to get out.The temperature is drop -ping, and since NewYears we have holed upwith warm socks and hotsoup. But this weekend, with friends, with a part-ner, or with two feet anda need to move, wehave a chance to get outof the house.

The 10x10 festival inPittsfield brings bonfires, oil paintings, live com-edy and 1940s jazz. Andacross the mountainsthenights are night full ofmusic — Grammy win-ners Angelique Kidjo atMass MoCA and Lady-smith Black Mambazo atthe Troy Music Hall — ordance to live rhythmswith Kusika and theZambezi Marimba Band.

You might read roll upyour sleeves in the stu-dios at IS183 or read"Much Ado about Noth-ing" aloud at Get Lit, orshare a scone at thePrairie Whale. You mightsnowshoe aroundNotchview. You might sitby the fire in the lobby ofthe Red Lion Inn andhave a quiet talk withSimon, the black andwhite inn cat.

You might split a cupof Chocolate Springs hotchocolate with a friend or

sample the hot chocolatebar at Rubiner’s or starta search for the Berk-shires' best brownie. (Ifyou do, please tell mewhat you find.)

If you want to cele-brate Valentine's Day —you singular or plural —the question isn't whatyou do. It's how.

One of the bestValentine's Days I'veever had happened at asnack bar. A former part-ner and I had ice creamsundaes in paper bowls,

and we laughed likeloons, and it wouldn'thave mattered if we'dbeen in a basement or afield or a wooden whal-ing ship, because thewhole point and the onlypoint was that we weretaking some time to bein the same place. And itwas still endlessly aston-ishing to both of us thatwe had someone to bein the same place with.

You don't have tohave a partner or a hotfudge sundae to laughlike that. I once had asgood a time walking twomiles in the snow to thenearest grocery store tobuy peach-colored car-nations so I could leavethem anonymously at myfriends' doorways. It wasa cold and clear after-noon, and my blood wasup and the sunset was

carnation-colored. Andthat day was a holiday.

Today can be another.Holiday, holy day,

comes from two Old Eng-lish words: holy from halig— sound, happy, whole— and day from daeg, sunrise to sunset, with theroot dhegw, to burn. SoHolidays are a time to feelwhole, hale and warm. I’lldance to that.
