This month, as we celebrate love through artistic expression, we also express this love through advocacies that reflect how much we care for our fellowmen. We join the nation in opposing violence against women and children. We join CHED and BFHE’s fun run for the benefit of Typhoon Glenda’s victims. We promote partnerships towardsthe improvement of our programs, so that our students will have the best education we can offer. Let love lead us all towards making significant contributions for the attainment of sustainable development in the community we serve. BUCAL holds first Andurog Awards Bicol University (BU) gave due recognition totwenty-nine agencies for their long-term partnership and support to the university, particularly the College of Arts and Letters (CAL), during the first Andurog Awards organized by the college and held at St. Ellis Hotel, Legazpi City,on February 27. According to the organizers, “Andurog”, the Bicol term for extending help, “encapsulates the ideals of a solid partnership: active involvement, innovative collaboration and shared commitment.” The trophy given to the awardees, a wooden carving of clasped hands, is meant to symbolize lending a hand, such as that which is done in a partnership. held on February 22. This is the second year of the simultaneous fun run organized by the Bicol Foundation for Higher Education (BFHE) in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). A

total of 3,500 participants from different schools registered for the activity. The beneficiaries of this activity are the victims of the calamities in Bicol, including those of Typhoon Glenda which caused much damage to the region last year.

A total of 549 members of the BU Provident Fund came together for a general assembly at the Concourse Convention Center, Legazpi City, on Feb. 11, 2015. Status and financial reports were presented, after which a new set of officers was established. BU joins National Arts’ Month

Bicol University (BU) has been chosen by France as one of its five partner-universities in the Philippines. This was first announced by BU President Fay M. Lauraya in her speech during the Andurog Awards (see story on p. 1) held on February 27. Dr. Lauraya said she was informed of the selection in an e-mail from the French government sometime in mid-February, and which she confirmed during an event hosted for visiting French President François Hollande in Manila on February 26. Other universities chosen are the University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, University

of Santo Tomas, and Visayas State University. The five universities will form partnerships for student and faculty exchange programs, and research collaboration with Université Bordeaux 3 on French language teaching and history; for studies related to Mayon Volcano and disaster science with Université Clermont;and for studies on climate change with Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris.

Senator Pia Cayetano talked with the students of Bicol University during her visit to Albay where she was scheduled to join the Exterra organized by the province of Albay. Cayetano discussed about preserving heritage and culture. Early in 2014 Cayetano showed her dismay on the construction of a condominium that “photobombs” the Rizal Monument destroying the view of the edifice.

on pressing issues on globalization and ASEAN 2015 and allow intercative dicussion on the possible solutions to problems presented; prepare school/ community-based action plans that will provide specific solutions founded on values; create a network of youth organization in the Philippines with common advocacies that shall take

the lead in realizing these action plans; and showcase unity despite cultural adversity through cultural presentations, summit logo, mantra, songs, and regional exchanges through formal and informal dialogs and set-ups. The summit was attended by youth from different regions in the country.
