BUCK CREEK BALLFIELD BEING FLIPPED If the Buck Creek looks a bit different, Lawn Beauty & Landscaping is

creating a new chapter for the softball field. East Tipp Summer Recreation is

working with the Washington Twp. Advisory Board to increase safety at the

field. Concession stands will be moved to the present outfield along with home

plate. This should eliminate children traveling from the playground next to

traffic along the hilly street to contact parents or buy treats. (This makes

Homeplate back closer to the hill, and the playground and the outfield fence

will be up where the concession stands are.)

Jason Rice, who has children playing in ET Summer Rec, is organizing the

work; ET Summer Rec & community donations are covering the cost of the

changes. It should be ready for next season. –Kay Miller

Billie shares picture albums of past

carry-ins, plus community photos.

FIVE QUESTIONS!

This month we honor three new members of BCUMC (Damon Brown,

Susan Couk and Cecil Funkhouser) with Five Questions! They joined on

Sunday, August 21, 2016. Pastor Dwight (left) led the service with the

congregation participating.

SUSAN COUK 1. What inspired you to make the decision to become a member of Buck

Creek UMC?

Because being a prior member and having followed a journey since then—I

felt it was time to find a church home again. BCUMC has many old friends

and new acquaintances and I’ve felt very close as a family. I felt I needed to

make a commitment as I prayed and followed God’s plan.

2. What's one of your favorite things about Buck Creek UMC?

The church family are very close and work together to make things work as

God loving, peace abiding, group. They are achieving many goals and

objectives together.

3. What are some things (events, groups) you would like to join or get

involved with at BCUMC? (Or is there something that should be added?)

Bible Study has been a great inspiration for me this past year. I’ve enjoyed

participating with the sewing group when time permits. Suggestion: The men

9

need a group to connect on a monthly basis if it isn’t already established. I’m

not aware of it.

4. Complete the phrase: Thank You God for...

Thank You God for giving me the will and power to accomplish my goals. To

know I have a church family who is kind and supportive.

5. What prayers would you like to offer for your Buck Creek UMC

family?

I pray the BCUMC is blessed with God’s love, may peace and love be

abounding and may all families and the pastor/family continue to lead us with

grace and mercy through God’s guidance.

CHILDREN’S SERMON: October 9, 2016 Good morning! This morning I noticed something happening outside.

The leaves are changing color and falling. I have several leaves here. Look at

these leaves. Some people think God didn’t make the world, that it just

happened. It doesn’t seem possible to me that it just happened. God planned

each one of these leaves! It’s pretty cool that they’re all different. They were

perfectly planned. They’re not just an accident or a coincidence! What’s

different about them? Their colors are different, and their shapes are different.

Look at each other. One thing that’s the same is that we’re all people. What’s

different? *Some are younger. Some are older. Everybody here looks

different. Curly hair, straight hair, long hair, wavy hair. God planned

everyone. God planned you before you were born. He knew the number of

hairs on your head. If He knew that I’m pretty sure He knows how to make

leaves. –Pam Smith

RECIPE CORNER “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice!” –Philippians 4:4

Why not serve the annual Thanksgiving sweet potatoes in a new and unique

way? These sweet potato stuffed orange cups smell heavenly when they are

baking!

ORANGE CUPS

6 oranges

3 cups cooked, mashed sweet potatoes

1 cup white sugar

1/4 cup orange juice

2 eggs, lightly beaten

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup butter, softened, divided

1 tablespoon grated orange peel

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon all-purpose flour

1 cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare oranges by cutting tops off, 1/4 to

1/2 inch down. Spoon out the flesh, leaving a shell.

In a large bowl combine sweet potatoes, sugar, orange juice, eggs, vanilla

extract, 1/2 cup butter and grated orange peel. Spoon mixture into orange

shells. Place in a deep casserole dish.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine remaining 1/2 cup butter,

brown sugar, flour and pecans. Cook until sugar dissolves in melted butter.

Spoon over oranges. Fill casserole dish with water to reach 1/2 inch in depth.

GOING ‘ROUND THE TABLE… Before enjoying their Thanksgiving feast, many families celebrate the

tradition of going around the table and letting each person express what they

are thankful for. Once again this year here are some “thankful fors” from our

readers…

+ I am thankful for the love of my family, my husband, children,

grandchildren nephews, cousins....... I am one lucky lady! -Candy Ganzel

+ I am thankful for such an awesome God, who is always with me no matter

how difficult life can get. Also, to have a very loving and devoted church

family. -Lydia Mueller

+ Where do I begin?! I am thankful for the man who has stood beside me thru

thick and thin for 35 years, John Wm Jennings, III. I am thankful for the love

and laughter of our beautiful daughter Sarah Elizabeth who left us after 25

short years. She taught us humility, courage, strength in the face of adversity,

grace in the face of insurmountable odds. I am thankful for a friendship that

began over an innocuous post about black walnuts 25 years ago!!! I am

thankful for my family in Indiana and our friends worldwide. I am thankful for

all this and so very much more. -Karen Cooley Jennings

+ I am so thankful and blessed that God lead me to Buck Creek United

Methodist Church family! Thankful for the prayer, concerns and meals. I love

each and every one of them! This my friends is a true family! -Donna Payne

+ We are thankful for Virginia Pattee Austin, who turned 101 this week.

Virginia the daughter of WA Pattee, who has a window in the Buck Creek

UMC church. Virginia attended the Buck Creek Church as a child, enjoys the

Buck Creek news letter each month, as it her connection to the Lafayette/Buck

Creek area. She says "thanks for the wonderful memories"

-John Tschopp - Grandson of WA Pattee

+ I'm thankful for that one set of footprints. Sometimes it's not because he's

carrying me, but because I've run off somewhere on the beach I'm not

supposed to be. Either way, He's always there. -Clayton Temple

+ I am so very thankful to our God, Lord and Savior for blessing my life in so

many ways. He gave me John for 52 plus years, and He gave us three sons,

each of whom has blessed us in different ways. Our wonderful, special

families, all our dear friends and neighbors throughout our lives, for providing

me with jobs which I truly loved and enjoyed, and for providing His love and

giving me stability when I needed it most. God is good, all the time!

-Pat Miller

14

+ Just wanted to say how very thankful I am for all of my friends at the

BCUMC. Even though I've been gone for sixteen years I still feel that I have a

very close relationship with so many -Sandra Harrison

+ I am thankful for my children AND THEIR FAMILIES. Also THAT I

BELONG TO A CHURCH FAMILY THAT WILL PRAY FOR ME WHEN I

NEED IT. I finally FOUND MY CAR KEYS THANKS FOR ALL THE

PRAYERS. God is good all the time, all the time God is... -Diane White

+ Kay Miller is thankful for everything around me ! God has blessed me with

family, friends, a sense of humor, and health to share his love with others.

+ I'm thankful for a good job. It may not be my dream job. But Alcoa has

provided a steady income, and excellent benefits for the past 11 years. My

father worked there for over 30 years and I grew up saying I'd never work in a

factory. Ironically it's also provided many opportunities for me to share Christ

with others. God puts us all in different places, but the common denominator

is that there is always a chance to share his light. -Sonny Graves

+ Well, there are a lot of things I am thankful for… I am thankful that God is

not done with me and continues to work on me. Oh, and for my car! -Taylor

Sims

+ I am thankful for so many things! I am thankful for the freedom to worship

God. I am thankful for this church and everyone in it. I am thankful for the

educational and employment opportunities I have experienced. I am thankful

that God has never given up on me and continues to work in and through me.

-Julie Sims

+ I am thankful for my God, my family, church family, my friends, and all the

blessings God has given me. -Retta Whiteaker

+ I'm thankful for life a good home my family all of them and when the

election is over. -Lorena Poore

+ I am so thankful for the Lord in my life. For my family who are so helpful

to me. Also for all the prayers that were prayed for my daughter-in-law(Jan's)

life. If it were not for prayer from lots and lots of people she would not be

here today. Thank you, Lord. -Mary Ellen Davidson

I'm very thankful to have Jesus in my heart, and his forgiveness, and his

promise of everlasting life in heaven! Also, I'm so thankful for Bill as my

husband for 50 years now, and for Matt and Renee', and Mike and Lana, and

our grandkids, Eli and Anna. I am also thankful for all our siblings and their

loved ones, too. We have many good friends too. I'm thankful for our church,

15

for living in a free country, and for our safety. I'm sorry to add so many

things, so I will stop now. Just know that we are so blessed! I don’t want to

forget our sweet little Scottie puppy, Molly! Bill and I are so thankful for her!

-Coley Sharp

+ I am thankful for God’s grace. I'm also thankful for a healthy family.

Thanks! -Sayde Uerkwitz

TURKEY FACTS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW

Turkeys are known to exhibit over 20 distinct vocalizations.

Individual turkeys have unique voices.

The modern domesticated turkey descends from the wild turkey.

Benjamin Franklin (the guy with those little eyeglasses) wanted to

make the turkey the national bird instead of the bald eagle.

Melegaris is the scientific genus name.

The turkey is a highly social animal.

Male turkeys are the "gobblers" making that cute gobbling sound.

Female turkeys chirp and cluck.

Turkeys have periscopic vision. By rotating its head, the turkey has a

360 degree field of vision.

(The turkey picture above was created on a typewriter, long before

computers came onto the scene.)

TIME CAPSULE: 1953-54 In honor of Veteran’s Day, we

want to share a poem written by

Charles “Chuck” Knochel. He was

probably a freshman at Buck Creek

School (1953-54) when he wrote it.

His teacher was Sarah Jane Norris,

who taught at Buck Creek and

Monitor schools, totaling 41 years,

retiring in 1965. She kept the poem

all of her life. (Sarah Jane passed

away in 1992 at the age of 94.)

The poem is especially significant

as Charles went on to become a

Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, and

serve in the Vietnam War. He was

lost over the Gulf of Tonkin fifty

years ago on September 22, 1966, at the age of 26. He was the son of Fern &

Jay Knochel (pictured below).

As you read the poem, think of Charles, his family, and the families of

others who have sacrificed so that we may all be free. Hug a Veteran. Listen

to their stories. You may not know them personally, but they are all a part of

our history…

21

My Last Moments

Tho the fires in Hell are burning

And the flames are leaping high

I hear the Angels calling

Far away up in the sky.

Tho you have not lived a perfect life

And your sins may still astound me

The good will overcome the bad

And is praise will be upon ye.

Remember now my children

As the fire is burning low

Promise me, you’ll remember thee

And live your life as so.

The conflict twixt our native lands

Is something to behold

The cause of it I’ll fear to say

Is something not so bold.

If the nations try to settle this

Without hard toil and strife

Then within this next half century

They’ll be fighting for their life.

And if our leaders cannot settle it

Then I fear its up to you

To carry out the problems

Our leaders have to do.

The best path for our nation

Is to settle it with peace

And then our free democracy

Will surely never cease.

And so my children I must leave

This world of hate and fear,

To another world of love and peace

So don’t you shed a tear.

By Charles Knochel
