For the second year in a row ARCH’s Buck-et List cycling challenge again went “virtual” due to the pandemic. No this does not mean virtual biking, but it did mean that once again there was no large meet up and race style start even though it’s never been a race. The 40km, 75km and 100km

challenges instead are about pushing yourself to achieve your bucket list, while collecting pledges to support Arch Hospice along the way. All pro-ceeds raised go towards providing compassionate care through end-of-life at ARCH and supporting local families.

In the past, well over 100 cyclists from all over Al-goma and elsewhere have participated. The totals for this year still have not been completed as the event runs until Saturday September 25th. Ruth

FULLY INSURED CERTIFIED ARBORIST Galinis sent us some photos including one ofBrian Read from Hilton Beach (who is soon to turn 70) who once again complet-ed the 100km jour-ney and had attached an odometer to his bicycle. While we all know the island is large, you may not have known that go-ing around in rough-ly a circle is about 100km worth of roads. Also pictured is Chris Cooper and his daughter Avery, originally from St. Joseph Island.

We also talked to Julie Premo, one of the orga-nizers of the event. She, too, has completed the 100km journey again as she has done in the past. As mentioned, there was no large meetup before and after like there was prior to the pandemic however t-shirts and loot bags were still given out by pledge sponsors. She tells us Outspoken Brewing was the top sponsor and they also had the support of the bike shops in Sault Ste. Ma-rie. Julie also sent us a couple of photos she took along her 100km journey.

Once again, the app Strava was used by many of the riders. Strava is an app that shows your route using GPS technology. So the previous routes were available there, or you could create your own. It also made it easier for those without odometers to track their distance.

There is hope that 2022 will return to a live event if it is safe to do so. In past years, volunteers offered up rest and repair stops where bikers could grab a drink or complete minor repairs to their bikes.

We will update the story when the total amount of money raised is announced.

First Meeting on Organizing a Committee on Environmental Issues a Success

RICHARDS LANDING – An introductory meeting to gauge interest in organizing a committee to focus on issues related climate change, waste reduction and recycling, sus-tainability and biodiversity in the Township of St. Joseph was held on August 23rd. The meeting was hosted by Mayor Jody Wildman and was attended by eight people in total.

The initial format was a roundtable discussion where attendees introduced themselves and talked about their interest in environmental sustainability and their concerns and hopes for the future. While there was significant con-cern expressed, there was also hope that grow-ing awareness, innovative ideas and the desire in the majority of people for more action, both by governments and individuals, would lead to real change.

There were also a lot of ideas brought forward with the recognition that there is a need for an integrated approach to public awareness and problem-solving. There are a lot of practical solutions around the world that are being done

by individuals and small communities that could be applied here.

The goal of this committee will be to raise awareness and promote day-to-day (as well as long-term) practical, achievable solutions and policy that could be adopted by both in both municipal operations, as well as for individual residents in daily activities and in their homes.

Recognizing that more ideas and perspectives are better, initial attendees wanted to see the committee open to residents and municipal council members from neighbouring communi-ties, so everyone is welcome.

The next meeting will be held Wednesday Sep-tember 29, 2021 at 7:00p.m. at the Township of St. Joseph Municipal Office at 1669 Arthur Street in Richards Landing. COVID-19 proto-cols (including masks and spacing) will be in place. For more information, please contact Jody Wildman at 705-297-0592.

Recently, I came across a booklet “Apples on the Mountain Experiments 1968-1988” written by Harold E Crowder. It is chocked full of informa-tion that Harold has gathered over these years. I thought I would share some information about history of apple orchards on the Island.

*Please note this Harold Crowder’s voice through-out the article, although information has been abridged and edited.

~Carrie Kennedy-Uusitalo, Curator.

From my early childhood years I have been inter-ested in the growing of apples. Upon retirement from Algoma Steel I decided to explore the pos-sibilities of success in applying present day tech-niques in this northern area. It has been a pleas-ant and interesting hobby. The preferred location for growing apples in this area appears to be on The Mountain. There are several major reasons including temperature, rainfall, soil and available markets. The early pioneers on the Island recog-nized some of these features. At one time, about 25 farmers on The Mountain area had small com-mercially successful orchards. Since those years, the local market has disappeared, the land had become worn out and many diseases have moved in to destroy quality and productivity.

During the latter part of my forty seven years in the steel business I spent part of my vacation time visiting apple orchards. These trips took me to the Okanagan Valley, Oregon, New York, Pennsylvania, Southern and Eastern Ontario and even the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. The best information was obtained from Traverse City, Michigan.

In 1965 we purchased the old 100 acre farm known as Carterton in Jocelyn Township, which had been unused for years but with an old frame house still habitable which had been built in 1895. It is said to be the highest farm in Ontario. It was surrounded with approximately 1000 acres of deserted farm land where many thousands of wild apple trees had sprung up from seeds which afforded a unique opportunity to discover new kinds of trees and fruit. Though far from

profitable, the old farm has been a good proving ground and we have enjoyed every facet of the endeavor.

When the settlers arrived in the late 1870s The Mountain was covered with a maple forest. By 1900 approximately 1000 acres of this had been cleared away and was in use for mixed farming by about 100 residents. The whole area was dot-ted with buildings, fences and small orchards. It was a prosperous community with cheap labour and good prices for all farm produce. 1 barrel of apples (3 bushels) sold for $4.00 while labour made $1.25 per day. There was lots of work on the land in the summer and in the bush in the winter. The new fertile land produced tremen-dous crops and there were few pests and little disease to cause trouble.

The weather is warmer on The Mountain than in lower surrounding area making the growing season longer. Apples, depending on the variety require from 70 to 200 frost free days from blos-som to picking time. The average time on the Mountain is 135 days. Rainfall on the mountain is about ideal for apple trees with an average of 81 cm. There was a time when selling apples on the Mountain was not a problem. Prior to 1910 any farm product was in such demand that buy-ers continuously travelled through farm areas in search of all kinds of farm produce including apples. Farmers could devote their entire efforts to production. Prices were high. Farmers who had large clearings were prosperous.

1910 the peak of prosperity for the Island had come. By the 1920s though all this had changed. There was a surplus of all kinds of farm produce, including apples. Farmers had to devote a large share of their time selling rather than producing. The former prosperous farmers were reduced to a meager income and soon many farms were deserted.

If you are interested in more of Harold’s apple information and experiments please feel free to drop by the Museum and take a look at his book. The Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am-5 pm until September 30th.
