011 has been a time of great change andprogress for Ohio Delta. Our Chapterhas transitioned into new officeholders

PHILANTHROPYIn the spring, we participated in the Kappa

LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN

Page 3: Buckeye Phi Psi - Summer 2011

amed the 1987 Preservationist of the Year bythe Pennsylvania Historical and MuseumCommission for his involvement in the

restoration of five historic houses in his Erie, Penn-sylvania, hometown, it’s pretty easy to see why TomHagen ’56 would take an interest in the renovationof the Ohio Delta Chapter House.

“I have an affinity for restoration and preservation, and I dearly loved the Chapter House. So I was par-ticularly glad to see that the renovation plans wouldsave the house. It was a motivating factor to supportthe campaign and keep that grand old buildinggoing,” Tom explains.

Arriving at OSU in 1955 as a junior transfer student,Tom initially lived in a Presbyterian church houserent free by doing custodial work. Because OSU wassuch a large campus, Tom wanted to be a part ofsomething that connected him more within the campus community. Anumber of close people in his life were Phi Psi alumni (including his futurefather-in-law), so he decided to check out the fraternities. What he foundin Phi Psi was “an opportunity to be in a more intimate setting, growingcloser to people, and creating camaraderie by having a common theme ofthe fraternity.” Tom says it “helped round out the college experience.”

Tom served the Chapter as treasurer his senior year, one of many differ-ent jobs he worked in order to pay his way through school. He earned abachelor of science in business in 1957. Following graduation, Tom,along with Fred Kiemle ’54, attended Navy Officers Candidate Schoolin Newport, Rhode Island.

After being commissioned, Tom went to Navy Supply Corps School forsix months, after which time he married his high school sweetheart, Susan(a CW at Wittenberg University). Brother Kiemle and Bruce Kreutzer’54 were both in Tom’s wedding party. Until 1960, Tom served the Navyas a supply officer on an Atlantic fleet destroyer and was stationed inNewport. After leaving active duty, he stayed in the Reserves and eventu-ally retired as a captain.

Returning to Erie, Tom rejoined the company heworked for part-time throughout college, Erie Insur-ance, which was headed by his father-in-law. Tomworked as assistant to the founder and president for12 years and then worked various officer positionswithin the company. He served as chairman andCEO until retiring in 1993.

After leaving Erie Insurance, Tom served as the 28thand last secretary of commerce for the Common-wealth of Pennsylvania and the first secretary of com-munity and economic development in theadministration of Gov. Tom Ridge. Since 1997, hehas been the chairman/owner of three small manu-facturing companies in Erie known as Custom GroupIndustries. Tom is the immediate past chairman ofthe Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, and he serves on boards for a number of civic andbusiness organizations. Since 2007, Tom has also

been the non-executive chairman of the board for his old company, ErieIndemnity Co. (NASDAQ: ERIE).

Tom believes the Chapter House renovation will set a new benchmark inquality living. And with the Chapter’s high academic standards, he is con-fident Ohio Delta has a bright future. “That all goes to helping recruitgood candidates for the fraternity, which in the long run will be thelifeblood for keeping it active and alive.”

Regarding alumni who have not yet pledged support to the campaign,Tom understands “some may not be able to during this difficult eco-nomic time. But if they have some disposable income—it doesn’t have tobe a lot—and if they have good memories from their time in Ohio Delta,I would hope they’d give it serious consideration.”

Tom and Susan split their time between Erie, Chautauqua, New York, andSarasota, Florida. They have two children, Sarah and Jonathan, and threegrandchildren.
