SalesContinued from Page B8

Wrangler’s best-ever January.Overall, sales of the Jeep

brand were up 23 percent.January is typically a slow

month for the auto industry.Buyers have less incentive toshop, because automakers of-fer fewer deals and promotionsafter the holidays. Tax bills arelooming and refunds haven’tarrived yet. Bad weather canalso keep customers away.

This January was a big im-provement over last year, when the polar vortex causedrecord-setting cold in much ofthe country. This year’s North-east blizzard at month’s endhad no real impact on sales, said Ford’s U.S. sales analystErich Merkle.

Gas prices continued to falllast month, hitting a six-yearlow of $2.03 per gallon on Jan.26, according to the AAA autoclub. That gave consumers theconfidence to choose biggervehicles.

Trucks, vans, and SUVs wereexpected to account for 55 per-cent of sales to individual buy-ers in January, the highest per-centage since 2004, accordingto the forecasting firm LMCAutomotive. Sales of the behe-moth Cadillac Escalade andLincoln Navigator more thandoubled.

Pickup sales also correlateclosely to home construction, and new home constructionrose sharply in December.

While incentives fell 10 per-cent from December, to $2,642per vehicle, they were stillabout 4 percent higher thanlast January, according to carshopping site TrueCar.com.That trend could continue; asthe pace of growth slows, auto-makers may offer more deals

to protect their market share.Analysts expect U.S. sales to

rise this year but at a slowerpace than in recent years assales approach the record of17.3 million set in 2000. Salesrose 6 percent to 16.5 millionin 2014; they’re expected torise just 3 percent this year.

Available credit, low interestrates, stable home values, andlow gas prices are all boostingsales, said Karl Brauer, an ana-lyst with Kelley Blue Book.

“If those factors remain inplace, new vehicle sales willcontinue to rise, though a bigshift in one or more couldquickly slow things down,” Mr.Brauer said.

At GM, sales of the nine-pas-senger Chevrolet SuburbanSUV more than doubled to4,130, while Chevrolet Silver-ado pickup sales were up 25percent. GM’s sales totaled202,786 for the month.

Ford saw a 17 percent gainfor F-Series pickups as the newaluminum-bodied F-150 hitdealer lots. Ford Explorer SUVsales were up 28 percent, help-ing Ford achieve total sales of178,351.

At Toyota, Prius hybrid saleswere flat, the victim of low gasprices. But Toyota saw a 19percent gain in truck and SUVsales. Toyota sold 169,194 ve-hicles in January.

increasingly seek out sometype of functional boost fromtheir foods and drinks, whether it’s more fiber, anti-oxidants, or protein. That hasleft the door open for Cokestep into the milk category, where the differences be-tween options remain rela-tively minimal and consump-tion has been declining fordecades.

“It’s basically the premium-ization of milk,” SandyDouglas, president of Coca-Cola North America, said atan analyst conference in No-vember. If developed prop-erly, Mr. Douglas said it is thetype of product that “rainsmoney.”

Fairlife, which Coca-Colaformed in partnership withdairy cooperative Select MilkProducers in 2012, says its

milk goes through a filtrationprocess that’s akin the wayskim milk is made. Filters areused to separate the variouscomponents in milk. Then, more of the favorable compo-nents are added, while theless desirable ones are keptout.

The result is a drink thatFairlife says is lactose free andhas 50 percent more protein,30 percent more calcium, and50 percent less sugar thanregular milk.

The same process is usedmake Fairlife’s Core Power, adrink marketed to athletesthat has even more proteinand calcium than Fairlifemilk.

Sue McCloskey, who devel-oped the system used to makeFairlife with her husbandMike McCloskey, said Fairlifewil l be marketed morebroadly to women who arethe “gatekeepers” for theirfamilies’ nutritional needs.

Even while touting its nutri-

tional advantages, however,Fairlife will need to be carefulabout communicating how itsdrink is made. Jonas Feli-ciano, senior beverage analystfor market researcher Euro-monitor, noted people wantdrinks that “do something forme,” but that Fairlife’s juiced-up nutritional stats may makepeople hesitant about hownatural it is.

“They have to explain thatthis is not an abomination ofnature,” Mr. Feliciano said.

The drink, which comes ina sleek plastic bottle reminis-cent of milk cartons, hasstarted appearing on shelvesand is expected to continuerolling out nationally over thenext several weeks.

At a supermarket in India-napolis, a 52-ounce bottle ofFairlife was being sold for$4.59. By comparison, the na-tional average cost for a half-gallon of milk, which is 64ounces, is $2.18, according tothe USDA.
