Quarriers Carer Support Service Moray

Quarriers Carer Support Service’s dedicatedstaff respond to both the practical and emotionalneeds of unpaid Carers of all ages acrossMoray.

“One of the biggest challenges we face is thatmany people don’t recognise themselves asCarers and don’t realise there is help available.”Susan Leonard, Project Manager.

Carers can be parents, spouses, partners, children or friends who provide unpaid help tosomeone else who needs it on a regular basis.

This may be because the person they look afteris frail or elderly, mentally or physically disabledor they may misuse alcohol or drugs. One inthree of us will be an unpaid Carer at some pointin our lives.

Quarriers provide a wide range of supportincluding:

Young Carers - one to one support for youngpeople to ensure their caring responsibilities areminimised and that they get the same opportuni-ties as other young people in their community.

Training - based on what Carers tell us theyneed and delivered in local communities.Subjects include managing stress and benefitawareness.

Opportunities to meet other Carers - our Careand Share groups run throughout Moray andoffer Carers an opportunity to meet up, shareexperiences and relax.

Advice and information - on a wide range ofsubjects eg specific medical conditions, localsupport services etc.

Emotional and practical support - is providedby our Adult Support Workers to help Carerscope in their caring role and to help them todevelop ‘a life of their own’.

No Strings Attached’ confidential helpline(01343 555031) - is available for Carers whoprefer to remain anonymous, but want informa-tion or advice. It is specifically targeted atCarers of people who misuse alcohol or drugsand Carers of people with mental healthproblems.

If you are a Carer, or if you know a Carer whoneeds help, call us on 01343 556031.

We should be used to it, I suppose, but I still feel slightly irked at acertain point in a telephone con-versation to be asked by someoneI don’t know what my postcode is,and then told by him or her whatmy address is.

A large part of our lives nowadaysis recorded in computers. And it’snot surprising that we feel at timesas if something is being taken fromus and that our personal liberty isbeing eroded.

Yet the Bible tells us that Godknows much more about us thanany computer database. He knowsevery move we make, every wordwe speak, every nook and crannyof our lives. Everything is subjectto His scrutiny. That’s becauseHe’s God.

Several years ago, Bette Midlerreleased a song called ‘From aDistance.’ A constant refrain is“God is watching us, God iswatching us, from a distance.” It’sunclear from the song whether theemphasis is on the fact that God iswatching us or the fact that Godisn’t anywhere too near. But it’scertainly true that God is watchingus.

God’s knowledge of us, however,is not like the worst aspects of theinvasive media. It may besomething of a challenge but it isalso a comfort to know that there issomeone who understands (fromthe inside) the real you and the realme, and still loves us - as He does.

This was the experience of which aHebrew poet wrote in Psalm 139.

It’s theme is God the inescapable. It says that wherever in theuniverse we may be we are sur-rounded by His presence.Wherever we go, His eye is alwaysupon us. “If I went up to heaven,You would be there, if I lay down inthe world of the dead, You wouldbe there. If I flew away beyond theeast, or lived in the farthest placein the west, You would be there tolead me… to help me.” (Psalm 139verse 8 to 10)

And why would we want itotherwise? Wherever I go, thereGod is. Now and always Heupholds me with His power, andkeeps me with his love.

At the vegetable section of mylocal supermarket I stoodponde r i ng….Organ i c…NonOrganic? What’s the difference?Well for those of you who want toknow, this is what it’s all about….

Organic farming is the name givento a variety of agricultural produc-tion systems that aim to work withnature, rather than by conqueringit. Organic is most commonly as-sociated with food production, both crop and livestock. However, organic methods are alsoemployed in the production ofmany other goods, leading toproducts as diverse as timber andclothing, to be labeled as organic.

The principal differences betweenorganic farming and conventionalfarming are:

❍ an extensive restriction of theuse of artificial pesticides, fertilis-ers and other agro-chemicals; ❍ a hostility to the agricultural ap-plication of biotechnology; ❍ a rejection of the routine use ofpharmaceuticals on livestock; ❍ an attention to animal welfare;and ❍ a focus on crop rotation, soilquality and maintaining biological

diversity as alternatives tochemicals.

In this way, organic farming is inmany respects, a return to tradi-tional farming methods.Organic food is felt by a growingnumber of consumers to be safer, more nutritious, taste better and beless harmful to the environmentand animal welfare than conven-tionally produced food, and themarket for it has grown in recentyears accordingly.

I recently spoke to Hugh Griesson, one of Scotland’s largest organicfarmers, and he talked to me abouthis father Sandy. “Sandy was notan Organic farmer but watchedwith interest as Hugh stoppedusing sprays and fertiliser. He stillworries about the weeds but thechange that he really noticed wasthe butterflies. Insects have thrivedsince we went organic, especiallythe butterflies. They are drawn tothe red clover that we plant for soilfertility. As they feed on the flowersthey fill the farm with colour andmovement. When the white cloverflowers it can be quite alarming towalk through. Every step disturbsa cloud of bees. Fortunately theyare well fed – too sleepy to bealarmed. Hoverflies and ladybirdshunt through our potato cropskeeping them free of aphids andthe diseases that aphids carry.Where there are insects there willbe birds and mammals. We havewetland fields with Lapwings, RedKite and Curlew. Other fieldsprovide seeds for finches, larks, and Tree sparrows. Sand Martinsfollow the cows, hunting for

insects. Barn owls hunt for volesand Red Kites clear up theleftovers.

Organic farming has brought thewildlife back into the fields but wehave also worked at improving thewoods and waste ground. Wehave planted hedges and wild-flower meadows. We have dugponds and planted woods. Welook after wetlands and rarehabitats. It is always veryrewarding because new plants andanimals moving in and setting uphome repay our efforts. They allbeautiful and all have a role to play. They are all a part of the jigsaw thatmakes up a healthy, living farm.”

Moray Coast and the Highland’shave some of the finest organicfarming in the world, so next time, like me, you stand ponderingOrganic or Non Organic, think ofHugh’s dad, Sandy!

Grateful thanks to:

Hugh Grierson Organic

Sticky Toffee Pudding andButterscotch Sauce

This month as the leaves are turning, one of ourmost popular sweets is sticky toffee pudding. Itfeatures often in our menu so I thought I would sharethe recipe. It is a fantastic sweet for the coolermonths and cheer up those dark evenings.

Ingredients - Pudding100g Pitted Dates50mls Water50mls Orange Juice75g Dark Or Light Brown Sugar65g Butter (Room Temperature)1 Egg125g Plain Flour7g Baking Powder5g Bicarbonate Soda1 tin condensed milk

Ingredients - Sauce75g Butter250ml Double Cream100g Light Brown SugarPinch Of SaltOne Vanilla Pod Seeded

Put dates, water and orange juice into a smallpan and bring to the boil. Simmer until they havebroken up slightly then leave aside (chefs tip - put in2-3 earl grey teabags to add flavour)

Cream sugar and butter with a hand blender orwooden spoon. Once soft, add your egg thencontinue to mix well. Sieve the flour and bakingpowder into creamed butter mix, then add bicarbon-ate of soda to date mix. Combine the date mix to thebutter mix, stir well, then put into a greaseproofpaper lined deep baking tin roughly 10”x 10”.

Boil the tin of condensed milk for 3 hours makingsure the tin is fully submerged at all times (to savetime, you may wish to purchase Carnation caramelavailable from local supermarkets). Take your boiled

condensed milk (toffee) and spread it around intothe mix before baking (the more the better). Cook inthe oven at 180°C (gas mark 5) for 15/20 minutes. The mix will still will be soft and wet when you testwith a skewer, hence the Sticky in Sticky ToffeePudding! Cut to desired size and shape.

Sauce method - this is simple - add all sauce in-gredients into a sauce pan then boil gently until allhas come together and sugar has dissolved. The dif-ference between this and toffee sauce is that but-terscotch has salt and vanilla in it.

I would serve the Sticky Toffee Pudding with yourfavourite ice cream and the butterscotch. You couldalso replace buttertscotch with custard if you liked.

This Recipe was given to me by my old head chefand good friend Mark Greenaway and I am nowpassing it out to you as I think we all love it! It's gotto be up there with chocolate brownie for me, whichI will leave for another month!

EXTRACTS FROM THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 5TH JULy 2010 OF KEITH COMMUNITy COUNCIL

Police Matters

• CL said a traffic survey was conducted

at Fife- Keith on the 1/7/2010. CL felt that

they weren’t there long enough to see

how much traffic there really was going

through the area especially in evenings

at the weekend. There are still

complaints about the speed of some

drivers. GC said to keep on taking

number plates and reporting them. DH

will be asked to contact the police on this

matter again.

• Vehicles on Nelson Court junction are

causing an obstruction.

• The Community warden has been

notified of property damage in the Den.

Two officers have been appointed to

cover the estate. Children been reported

to be wandering around at 3am, 10 - 11

year olds.

• Implements/trailers parked in the lorry

park - can they be removed.

Presentation

• John Cairnie and Richard Donald gave

an interesting presentation from the

Head of Children’s Services in Moray.

They try to work with people in schools

and other groups in the area to help

youngsters and parents. Richard Donald

left an information pamphlet for coun-

cilors to read over. Ivor Lee is a contact in

Keith for anyone needing advice.

• There was a reduction in Moray in the

period 2006/2007 due to the partnership

with the police that the group had. John

Cairnie was interested to hear what the

councilors thought of youth crime. JM

said that the youth team had been cut

although the community warden is

greatly appreciated. She said there were

still the ongoing problems that have

always been around eg Noisy cars and

underage drinking. She didn’t think it was

any worse than twenty years ago.

Matters Arising

• DH took the decision to get vouchers for

the youths who were being presented

with awards at KGS.

• DH will find out if Moray Councils

insurance will cover the BMX track if it

were to go ahead.

• JM asked if the traffic survey had been

done at peak times in School road - GC

said they had been done at peak times.

• Complaints again about Tesco lights.

• GC said Bear were to get in contact

about the snow clearance. A meeting is

to be arranged for Moray Council and

Transport to attend as well as Bear.

• GC will chase up on the drains for Fife

Keith square.

• Potholes around the town need to be

repaired - Den car park and School Road

were mentioned. GC will see to it.

Correspondence

• Moray Council is disappointed that KCC

are objecting to theroad closure in

School Road. Traffic survey done in that

area.There haven’t been a lot of objec-

tions for the closure of school road. There

was a meeting held in the library which

DH attended, She said that the crossing

at Bydand can be dangerous.

• CC received a letter from Alistair Keddie

outlining how to tailor meetings. There is

a lack of people attending the meetings

on a regular basis. Usually someone

does attend from Keith.

• The Caravan park- there was no copy

of the consultation. JM responded to the

consultation. RP knew the background

and helped with the response. The

caravan park needs to be shut down for

two months. Strathisla have responded

as well.

• JM responded to the funding – Option 3

was decided.

Community Councillors Updates

• CL - Roads and Rights of Way - More

volunteers have been working with the

railway.

•The fence at the Old town onlooking the

railway line is broken. Can it be fixed?

•Why doesn’t the street cleaner use the

machine to clean the gullies?

• Christmas Lights - We will be unable to

use Stephen Taylors shed. SC has

Over the summer and

away from parliamentary

duties I have managed to

get back to cycling, which

I very much enjoy but

which also often takes a

back seat. Along with the

family I have been exploring the cycling

byways around Elgin and Lossiemouth

and introducing my two young children to

the activity before being rapidly out-

classed with youthful energy while I am

peching and wheezing my way up a hill.

Fortunately a few days out have blown the

cobwebs away and I am feeling a little

fitter than I was. The trick of course will

be keeping up the effort but with the same

two youngsters pestering me to take them

out it will hopefully continue!

With the time delay between

writing a column and it

being in print I suspect

summer will be a distant

memory, however I feel it is

still timely enough to make

mention of a new business in Fochabers

which is already enjoying great success with

locals and visitors alike. After a visit to

Fochabers Ice Cream Parlour you, like me,

will probably be amazed, not just at the very

cool old style signage complete with giant

cone, but also at the unbelievable mouth

watering selection of ice creams. With

flavours including ‘Blackforest Gateaux’,

‘Fudgy Mallow Swirl’ and the very old school

‘Parma Violets’ I can honestly say I had to be

dragged away, but not before managing to

get a cone. It’s great to see a new business up

and running and using local suppliers, espe-

cially in the current challenging economic

environment, and I wish them every success.

sourced lights for the A96 - have to be bought in June or the

price goes up. 20 will be bought.

• MC - Signs and Street Furniture - MC asked about signs

going up to point the way to Mid Street shops - permission

from C Murphy would be asked for. Was there any money from

KCRP from this group that could be used to change the

signs that MC already has in storage. It wouldn’t cost much

too get the signs are written. Notice board displaying infor-

mation has never been done in Tesco. Flags pointing the way

to Mid Street were suggested at the end of the lane on Moss

Street, going to Mid street – Auction room lane. Tubs not

looked after

in Keith Square. Nobody has volunteered to do them this year.

Sign fallen down in Newmill.

External Groups Updates

Regeneration Partnership – Most comments are positive

about the flags on Mid Street. Some need to be uncurled.

Hopefully shopkeepers will do this. Other ones to go up for
