A WORD FROM OUR CEOGreetings to all my Bud Industrial colleagues, and welcome to our first publication of PULSE, which is aimed at sharing news, stories and successes from each of our diverse business units.

I am now in my third month as CEO of Bud Industrial, and I am delighted to be in this challenging role, leading an amazing team of wonderful people in our Bud Industrial Group. Our strength lies in the commitment of our people, together with the quality and solid foundations of our business, and this has shone through in this exceptionally tough economic environment in which we operate. The diversity of our Group further adds to our resilience and enables us to weather the tough times we find ourselves in.

I do believe that 2019 will prove to be a turning point, and I am confident (and hopeful!) that we should start to see an improvement in our trading conditions as we head towards 2020. I do find it mind-blowing that we are already half-way through the year. I encourage you all to keep your heads down, to remain positive and to keep trying hard each and every day. This will be the difference.

We also have great opportunities to work together more closely as the Bud Industrial Group - extracting synergies, identifying opportunities for each other and together achieving more success. It is up to each and every one of us to keep our fellow Bud Industrial companies top of mind in our daily dealings.

KZN FLOOD RESCUE MISSION On 23 April, the KZN Fire Department asked GAS to assist with aerial lift equipment in order to rescue two stranded men stuck underneath a bridge during the flooding. Collectively, the KZN Fire Department, KZN Metro Police, Concord Cranes and our GAS team were able to save two lives.

Alan Will, Hendrik Swanepoel and Nicholas Wink, who represented the GAS team, operated our 48m Genie SX150 machine brilliantly and were heroes in this rescue mission. Thank you team KZN.

NAMPO 2019 - NEW TRAILERS LAUNCHED Celebrating the launch of Innovation in Motion, AFRIT showcased 8 of its finest trailer models at this year’s event. The T6 Tautliner, with its improved leader chassis, upgraded top structure and advanced modular air and electric system was displayed to showcase its advanced design.

MASTERS OF THE CASTING INDUSTRIESAutocast SA an associate company of Bud Industrial Services has been in business since the 1950’s. The business supplies cast, machined and assembled Iron, Aluminium and Chrome components to the Automotive and Mining sectors mostly within Southern Africa with some indirect exports to the United States. The Automotive business uses hi tech automated manufacturing processes focussed on high volume production at its plants in Port Elizabeth to produce components to the local automotive sector.

Product supplied include fully assembled cylinder heads used in the VW Polo range and rear axle components used in the Toyota Hi-Lux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu LDV being built in South Africa. The mining business located in Brits supplies hi-chrome grinding media to the local platinum and chrome mines. The mining business recently concluded a transaction with the Educational Empowerment Trust whereby it sold its Mining business to a 51% empowered structure of which Autocast will remain a 65% shareholder. Autocast SA has 420 employees.

BUD INDUSTRIAL ANNUAL SALES CONFERENCE In April this year, Bud Industrial held their annual Sales Conference at the Royal Swazi Spa in Swaziland. This conference was a particularly important one due to the planned formal introduction of Bud to our important sales teams. Peter Amm, Neil Wilson and Andy Leith presented on different aspects of Bud and what it means for our futures and the future of the Industrial Services group and, not only did they deliver a very strong and impactful message, but they created a sense of deep pride and belonging amongst our people. Our Chairman, Jo Grove touched on very poignant points and our teams held onto each word that was said. Jo delivered an important message which resonated with many of our people.

NAMPO 2019 saw the introduction of the newly designed 45m³ Side Tipper Interlink combination. The lowered height ensures an improved center of gravity and increased trailer stability. The lower total trailer height also reduces wind resistance that should contribute to better overall fuel consumption.

Also on exhibit, the specialized SD8 Stepdeck trailer showed-off its very noticeable upgrades; such as a lower deck height for a better loading approach angle, wider ramps with improved grip for ease off loading and improved load securing options - to name a few. The F6 Flatdeck, Bottom Dump and Side Tipper also showcased Afrit’s exceptional focus on quality and innovation – Providing products with the functionality you demand with the quality you can trust.

UNI-SPAN AND CONCORD CRANES OFFICIALLY B-BBEE LEVEL 2 CERTIFIEDWell done to Francois Smith and team and Adrian Shackleton and team who worked tirelessly for months planning all the elements, setting up a skills development plan and making sure everything went smoothly. They have learnt over the years what is required for a good B-BBEE score and we now have a strong strategy moving forward. Congratulations teams – this is awesome news!

WATT STREET BUS RAPID TRANSPORT SYSTEM Uni-Span has just been awarded the 18-month Watt Street contract by WBHO to assist in building a viaduct between Sandton and Alexandra. Congratulations to the team on being awarded this very exciting and important project.

UNI-SPAN BOOST THEIR EQUIPMENT AND STOCK Uni-Span bought the entire yard and all the equipment from Concor, giving a huge boost to our equipment and stock. The team have moved a significant amount of equipment from Midrand and Vanderbijlpark to our new yard in Westonaria and the plan is to build a large refurbishment yard. Dale Austin and team have been working extremely hard at this. Thank you for your efforts and well done on completing such a big project.

GAS LAUNCHES NEW GENIE Z60 FE AND Z45 XC BOOMS AT AFRICAN CONSTRUCTION EXPO While the African Construction Expo was not as busy as had been hoped, the team did receive some very positive enquiries and new contacts were made. This was the first attempt at an exhibition that exposed GAS and Genie and we feel proud of what we achieved with our exhibition. We are already following up on the leads and working to turn them into sales!

CONCORD IS LOOKING STRONG IN THE EASTERN CAPE

MULTI-FRANCHISE TURNKEY SOLUTION PROJECT

Concord has been awarded a project that requires a full turnkey solution. This project entails unpacking over 100 containers, storage of contents, reloading of containers, transporting loads to Mercedes Benz and then offloading. The operation involves Goscor Cleaning machines, GAS cherry pickers, Goscor lift trucks and our cranes. This is a sign of a great Bud Industrial services partnership and collaboration and we’re proud of the good team work.

BRS BRANCHES UP AND RUNNING We are very proud to announce that our East London, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein BRS branches are officially open for business and going well. GAS, Uni-Span and Concord have been partnering together to offer our clients a bespoke and multi-faceted product offering which is tailor-made according to our clients’ specific business cycle. Wayne, Richard, Robert, Riaan and Benno have been working extremely hard alongside our three BRS companies to lift this off the ground and we thank you for your efforts in teaming up our three complimentary businesses.

CONCORD PROUDLY OWNS FOUR MAMMOTH FAYMONVILLE TRAILERS Our new Faymonville trailers extend to an amazing length of up to 48.7m and 54.3m. We already have two upcoming projects lined up for our extendable trailers, the first being the transportation of wind blades, hubs and nacelles to the Nxuba wind farm. The second project involves the transportation of 144 wind blades over four months from PE to the Golden Valley wind farm. Nice work Chester and team!

POSITIVE IN FLAT CONSTRUCTION MARKETDespite there being very little capital expenditure on projects in the construction sector, construction equipment supplier SANY GM Barry Owen says the company sees good opportunity to grow the SANY brand in a rather stagnant market. “We have seen phenomenal growth as we more than tripled the business turnover last year. However, it is coming off a low base, so obviously the percentage growth will stabilise over time. It is important to note that SANY only uses world-class components, such as engines from Isuzu and Cummins and pumps from Kawasaki and Parker,” he said.

In 1984, George Owen Siddle started a family business that would grow to be one of South Africas most recognised and respected Industrial Equipment Suppliers. 35 years later, the group has grown 10 fold and is a proud growing force in the industry. EXTENDING SANY RANGE EVEN FURTHER IN 2019Despite tough market conditions, Goscor Earthmoving Equipment (GEM) achieved significant growth in 2018 and is poised to extend its SANY range even further in 2019. This includes the addition of an even larger excavator. “As the fifth-largest construction and related equipment manufacturer in the world, SANY is a major powerhouse, with impressive technology. Coupled with Goscor and the Bud Group, that makes for a formidable combination,” says Barry Owen, MD of GEM. Another development on the cards for 2019 is to showcase the SANY SY335 34 t excavator as an intermediary machine for mining, construction, and agriculture.

WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT FOR LONGEST SLIP-AND-SLIDEThe Bobcat KZN branch were instrumental in assisting the Pecanwood Oktoberfest Lifestyle Festival in the Midlands to attempt to construct the worlds longest slip-and-slide - a Guinness World Record attempt. The 1.6-m-wide and 630-m-long trench needed for the slip-and-slide was dug out over a three-day period with the assistance of a tough Bobcat S175 skid steer loader. The main challenge was to dig through thick wattle-like ground cover in order to sculpt the trench for a plastic lining to be placed over it, in order for soapy water to be sluiced down its length to create the slip-and-slide.

COMPLETE SOLUTION FOR LASER FAST TRUCK STOP ON R59Prowalco Tatsuno (PT) has provided a complete solution for the Laser Fast Truck Stop on the R59 near Henley-on-Klip for main contractor Petrocon. This included three 100 000 litre tanks, supplied by local manufacturer Petrotank South Africa. Prowalco Tatsuno also supplied five of its state-of-the-art ICON 5000 petrol pumps. PT was responsible for the complete installation, including UPP pipes and containment chambers for the pump sumps and tanks. The Automatic Tank Gauging (ATG) solution was supplied by Franklin Fueling Systems from the US, which is distributed locally by Prowalco Tatsuno. With up to 13 projects being overseen by the UPP Department currently, the opportunity for real growth lies in existing operations upgrading to the latest technology, Prowalco Tatsuno Sales & Marketing Arthur Carolin points out.
