The History Behind How Buda Got Its Name

Buda was not named Buda from the start. It was once named Du Pre.

The most common explanation for why Buda is named Buda

Buda comes from the Spanish word viuda or widow and may refer to a pair of widows that cooked at the Carrington Hotel in the 1800s.

History

Buda was established on April 1, 1881 when Cornelia Trimble donated land for a town site at an International-Great Northern railroad depot where Buda was just some land.

At different times the community supported mills, hotels, banks, a lumberyard, two newspapers, a cheese factory, a movie theater, and a skating rink.

When the Great Depression hit in about 1929 the estimated population was 600, in 1933 it fell to about 300. It did not grow back to the predepression levels until mid 1980s. Its population then grew in 1990 to 1,795 then 2,204 in 2000.
