DESCRIPTION

YOU CAN WATCH THIS PRESENTATION IN MUSIC HERE (You have a link on the first slide): http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/sandamichaela-1381637-budapesta/ Thank you! Probably the most striking feature of the landscape of Budapest is the panoramic Gellért Hill (235m (771ft): a block of dolomite, the east flank of which falls steeply down to the Danube, while the west side consists of terraces. Along its geological fault several medicinal springs emerge which supply the Gellért Baths, Rudas Baths and Rác Baths. St. Stephen's Basilica is dedicated to Hungary's first king, St. Stephen. The largest church in Budapest, about 8500 people can get in. Apart from its vastness St Stephen's Basilica offers other attractions: it houses Hungary's most sacred treasure, St Stephen's mummified right hand, the Szent Jobb (Holy Right Hand) Main Altar: statue of St Stephen carved out from Carrara marble by Alajos Stróbl, Gabriel archangel holds the Holy Crown above the head of the king The City Park (Városliget in Hungarian) was the main venue of the millennium celebrations in 1896.

Cave Church (Sziklatemplom), Gellért Hill Certainly an eerie sight, this alleged abode of a holy and hermetic monk was expanded by the Paulite order in the '20s and '30s from the original cave into the modern complex. Under the communist regime, the entire order was arrested and imprisoned, and the church was walled up with concrete for nearly 40 years. Today, the church is an active site for tourists and pilgrims. The interior of the church is certainly interesting, but don't expect to be occupied for much more than a short while. While tourists aren't allowed inside the church during services, the music played inside takes on a strange but compelling echo

At the foot of Gellért Hill and directly facing the green Szabadság Bridge, the world-famous hotel was built in the Vienna Secession style and incorporates gorgeous elements of the then-emerging Art Nouveau. While the hotel itself is probably beyond most student budgets, the equally famous adjoining baths are certainly not. Probably the most popular of the Buda baths for tourists, the Gellért Baths feature a richly tiled interior with statues and columns surrounding the main bath. Outside, an enormous sitting bath is popular with visitors of all ages.

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest. It was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Budapest, and was opened in 1849.

Saint Stephen's Basilica, (Roman Catholic basilica), is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose mummified fist is housed in the reliquary. It is the third largest church building in Hungary.

The Millennium Memorial, was completed in 1900, the same year the square was named "Heroes' Square". It lies at the end of Andrássy Avenue (with which it comprises part of an extensive World Heritage site), next to City Park.

The Vajdahunyad Castle houses the Hungarian Agricultural Museum. Founded here in 1896, it is the first institution of its kind in the world.

The Vajdahunyad Castle was built between 1896 and 1908, designed by Ignác Alpár. It is a copy in part of a castle in Transylvania, Romania, that is called Hunyad, though it is also a display of different architectural styles: Romanic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.
