HUA HINPRACHUAP KHIRI KHANSECTION 1 : 90 kms.

H ua Hin first developed as a fishingvillage between long sandy beaches

stretching for kilometres north and southof the small harbour. Shortly after therailway reached the town in 1922, thebeach to the north was chosen as the sitefor the ‘Klai Kangwon’ (meaning ‘far fromworries’) Royal Palace. Hua Hin thenbecame a genteel beach resort.

When the tourism boom of the 1980’scame, Cha-Am developed to the north, and high rises sprang up between the tworesorts. Hua Hin, however, has beenprotected and whatever the changes takingplace on land, the long beaches and tidalsand flats so perfect for walking at dawnor sunset have remained amongst the bestin the kingdom.

North to Cha-Am and PhetchaburiNorth of the Marukathaiwan Palace, several

monolithic high-rise condotels mark the coast asfar as Cha-Am, where resort accommodationfollows a beach-front road in this popular Thairesort.

The coast road north from Cha-Am (Pointers9&10) offers a marginally longer, but much quieterroad to Phetchaburi than the stressful main trunkroute (H4). The coastal route is recommended ifyou are not in a hurry. North of Hat Chao Samranthe beaches become mud-flats backed by salt pans, and the coastal roads are severely broken up.

PhetchaburiWith relics from the Khmer empire at Wat

Kamphaeng Laeng going back to the 12th century,Phetchaburi is the site of an old settlement. Long aseat of royalty, the city has many temples as well astwo 19th century royal palaces — the Phra NakhonKhiri Historical Park and Phra Ram Ratchaniwet (BanPeun) Palace (to visit Ban Peun, enter the army camp).

Temples of interest are Wat Yai Suwannaram (anold ubosot, 18th C. murals and a library on a pond)and Wat Ko Kaeo Sutharam (18th C murals) andWat Mahathat (Khmer-Ayutthayan prangs). Severalof the temples have long wooden row houses (kuti)for monks.

The Buddhist shrines at Khao Luang (4 kms fromcity centre) and Khao Bandai It (1.5 kms) areamongst the best examples of cave shrines commonto the karsts and limestone hills of Phetchaburi andRatchaburi provinces.

The highlight, however, remains the Phra NakhonKhiri Historical Park. A short cable-car ride takesyou up to King Mongkut’s hill-top residence, whichhas been converted into a national museum, andto cobbled pathways shaded by plumeria treescovering the summit.

ollow the route indicated (Pointers 14-18) for theshortest route to Kanchanaburi (223 kms from Hua Hin)

avoiding the busy highways. The minor roads on the banksof the Mae Khlong is also an interesting and tranquilalternative to busy highways 4 and 323.

RatchaburiThe city of Ratchaburi is worth visiting for the National

Museum in the old city hall (08:30-16:30 Closed Mondays,Tuesdays & National Holidays) and the Khmer style ofarchitecture at Wat Mahathat.

Several cave shrines are found in Ratchaburi Province.

F Khao Chong Phran cave (H3089 KM18 north from Ratchaburi)is noted for the flocks of bats which fly out of its mouth asdusk falls. Wat Khanon (east bank of the Mae Khlong 3.5kms north of Photharam) has preserved the traditions ofshadow puppets (demonstration 10:00 am Saturdays only).

The Floating Market at Damnoen SaduakThough the market is for tourists, hiring a boat (300-700

Bt) to see the maze of canals in this area remains fascinating.A return journey to the floating market from Hua Hin (145kmsone way) requires a very early start, as the market windsdown after 11:00 hrs.

KANCHANABURITHE THREE PAGODASSECTION 4 : 233 kms.

Kanchanaburianchanaburi City is interesting for its market and forthe accommodation on or near the river, but it is most

famous for the ‘Bridge over the River Kwai’ (actually RiverKhwae) and war-grave cemeteries of the ‘Death Railway’.

Nearby temples of interest include Wat ThamMangkongton (9 kms H3429 KM5) and Wat Tham Khao Noiand Wat Tham Sua (17kms. South on H323 to Tha Muang —cross over the Vajiralongkorn Dam and turn right)

The Valley of the Khwae Noi (H323 from Pointer 24)The Khmer ruins at Muang Singh attest to the strategic

value of this valley as a route between Burma and Thailand.Passing close to the ruins a thousand years later, the DeathRailway brought an infamy which contrasts starkly with thebeauty of the surrounding mountains.

KKM12 H3229 to Ban Kao National Museum (Left turn

16kms. H3445 KM2. 08:30-16:30 closed Mons & Tues. 30Bht..), which has a collection of artefacts dating from around2000 BC, and the Khmer Ruins of Muang Singh HistoricalPark (25 kms. H3445 KM11 30 Bht..). Continue north onsealed road for back route to Sai Yok and the Krasae Trestle.

KM15 H3343 left to Sai Yok. Direct route to Wang Postation and the Krasae Trestle

KM45 Paksaeng Pier (Left turn — 2kms) for boats toLawa Cave and raft accommodation upriver. Fill gas tank ifnear empty!

KM65 The Hellfire Pass Museum (Left turn 300m — seeDeath Railway)

KM80. Saiyok National Park (Left turn — 3kms). Caves, waterfalls, boats to Lawa Cave and raft accommodation.

KM84. Daowadung Cave (Turn left and follow road acrossthe river. Turn right at T junction with dirt road. Turn left atsign to temple after 1.3 kms and drive up concrete lane —4kms). Probably the best caves to see.

THE DEATH RAILWAYThe Death Railway is named for the more than 100,000 lives taken to build and maintain

Thebridge over the Khwae Yai is especially popular during the sound and light show (held atthe end of November — call TAT Kanchanaburi Tel: (0) 3451 1200 for details).

The trestle at Tham Krasae (near Wang Po Station, Sai Yok. H3343) has only partly beenmodernised since the original structure was built by POWs. More remnants of the railwaycan be seen at Sai Yok Noi Falls (H323 KM46), which is 1km beyond the terminus of theoperational part of the line at Nam Tok Station. Train schedules are as follows:

o help you find your way through an unfamiliar landscape, suggested routes have been identified with numbered

pointers listed in sequence in the likely direction of travel.T

Distances and turnings are indi-cated by kilometre references, which follow the kilometre stonesplaced on all government high-ways:

H4 KM13 = Kilometre stone 13 is thenearest kilometre marker onHighway 4 (Phetkasem Highway).

(west turn — 3kms) = if you aretravelling north, this means youshould turn left and reach yourdestination after 3kms

Fill up with petrol! Remote countryroads have no filling stations, or fuelis only served by hand pumps frombarrels, which is inconvenient andmore expensive. Check your fuelbefore leaving towns if planning to goon a long, remote route through backroads or the border country.

Alternatives routes may besuggested, and it is up to you to decidewhich road is best for you. Wherepossible, the suggested routes try toavoid busy main highways in order tohelp you cruise happily along theholiday road in Thailand.

Broken and buckled roadsurface frequently encountered!

4 WD (only)! If you are driving avehicle that does not have four-wheeldrive, please do not enter this road.Though it is not usually necessary toengage 4WD on most dirt roads, thehigher clearance and fortifiedsuspension of such vehicles make theiruse obligatory on many unsealed roadsin Thailand.

Dirt roads are common in borderareas and in the mountains, andimportant unsealed routes are regularlymaintained and classed as all-weather.In the green season, however, manyroads can have deep muddy patches. We recommend that you avoid dirtroads, in particular remote ones, as youwill be responsible for anything thathappens to vehicles off regularlymaintained and paved roadways.Should you go on a dirt road, however, please drive slowly to avoid mechanicalproblems and to keep the dust down, especially when passing people anddriving through villages.
