As part of the 1973
ceremony
dedicating the
newly named
Buffalo Soldier
Field, a monument
which became
known as the West
Point “memorial
rock,” was placed
across from the far
northeast corner of
Buffalo Soldier
Field.
The five paragraphs on the memorial
rock plaque do not tell the story as
completely or compellingly as it should
be.

Those expert horsemen supported instruction of future officers at West
Point in mounted drill and tactics – cadets that included the likes of
George S. Patton Jr., Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar N. Bradley, and many,
many others who attended the academy during those five decades.
Unlike other monuments to the Buffalo Soldier across the country that reflect
service on the frontier or other places, the new West Point Buffalo Soldier
Monument will be uniquely indicative of their service while at West Point.

With the only monuments placed on Academy grounds in recent years being
those related to barracks (Eisenhower and MacArthur), and the library
(Jefferson), approval of the proposed BSAWP West Point Buffalo Soldier
Monument by the Academy is indicative of the significant import of the
project to the Academy.
The overall fundraising target for the Memorial is $1Million. Cost
breakdown includes:
$750,000 for the memorial itself. The donation window runs through
July 2017 for the $750,000 cost of the memorial that will allow
sending the project to the Department of the Army for final approval
as the cost of the memorial exceeds the $500.000 gift approval
authority delegated to the Superintendent.
$250,000 for additional contingency, project administration, purchase
and distribution of donor recognition gifts, dedication ceremony, etc.
with any excess going to the Buffalo Soldiers Association of West Point
for its other education-based programs.
It is anticipated that project completion will occur during 2018, given
that contract signing cannot occur prior to Department of the Army
approval following achievement of the fundraising target.
