REVEREND HACKBARTH’S MESSAGE Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

I will wager that almost all of us have heard (and used) the phrase “Status Quo.” It is Latin and means “the mess we are in.”

Most leaders see what is, yet they also have a vision for what could be. It seems that they (leaders) are never content with things as they are – they seem compelled to improve the situation. Leadership – by definition – is to be in front, breaking new ground, moving away from the “Status Quo.”

Dissatisfaction with the status quo does not always mean having a negative attitude. It has everything to do with a willingness to be different and to take risks. A person who fails to risk change fails to grow. Consequently, a “leader” who loves the “status quo” soon becomes a follower.

Risk problems may seem dangerous to some people because they are more comfortable with old problems (“we always did it this way”) as opposed to coming up with solutions to the problem. I have had good (and bad) experiences regarding risk taking and I am sure that many of you have had similar life experiences. It seems that I learn the most when my errors in judgment come back to bite me.

Regardless of the risk outcome, the difference (in people) is attitude. When one seeks out a potential leader, seek someone else who seeks solutions.

    Blessings,

Reverend Mike Reverend Michael Hackbarth State Chaplain Wisconsin Elks Association

10 WAYS TO CHASE AWAY STRESS!

    Take deep breaths

    Take a walk outside

Say no to what you don’t have time to do

    Leave work on time

Lower demands you put on yourself

Ask questions and communicate with co-workers

Take care of taxing tasks in the morning to get them out of the way

Look at large projects as steps to complete one by one

Laugh at least once a day

Live for today. Do not dwell on the past or worry about the future

"Good Times Are Carved In Wood County" is not just our slogan it is our way of life. As a 30 year member of the Order I couldn't be more delighted to welcome any group to our county than the B.P.O.E. The impacts of your charitable endeavors are significant and do not go unnoticed in our communities. Your members make life easier for those less fortunate every day of the year.

Wood county has a diverse economy with Marshfield in the northeast and its' world-class medical facilities. Wisconsin Rapids in the southwest corner is home to the nations leader in the production of coated paper. In between you will find cranberries, and lot's of them. We are the largest producer of cranberries in the world.

Kenneth (Ken) Thomack, age 79, passed away at Cherry Meadows

Hospice early on Thursday, February 2, 2012, following a very brief illness. Ken was born in Appleton on June 19, 1932, son of the late Adna and Laura (McFarland) Thomack. Ken attended Appleton West High School, where he excelled at wrestling, basketball and, especially, football. He was the president of his senior class in 1952 and still enjoyed his many friends and acquaintances in “Club 51”. In September of 1979, Ken married the love of his life, Barbara Rusch. Barb preceded him in death in 2008. In his younger years, Ken worked in the paper mill, but most will recall his many years as a financial planner and partner at Planning Concepts, Inc. Another love of Ken’s was the B.P.O.E. He was a member for years of Kaukauna Lodge #962 and in 2003 served as the President of the Wisconsin Elks Association. Here, too, he treasured his many friends and associates. Ken was also President-Elect and Honorary President of Appleton’s Golden K Club. He loved the outdoors, sports of all kinds, the Green Bay Packers and time spent at the family cottage on Musky Lake.

Ken is survived by three children: Michael A. Thomack of Appleton; Tammy L. (Jeff) Swedberg of Cecil; and Misty (Jason) Juhlke of Neena; two grandchildren: Colton and Bryson; his special friend: Mary Rydell of Mensha; a brother, Bill (Joan) Thomack of Appleton; and a sister: Marilyn McGowan of Wisconsin Rapids.

WISCONSIN ELKS NATIONAL VETERANS SERVICE COMMITTEE

    RICHARD “DICK” KOHLBECK, CHAIRPERSON

In each of the Elks Lodges, there is a State Veterans Service Committee at work. Elks and their families have given generously of their time, energy and resources so that the lives of ill and aging veterans will be enhanced. Committee membership is diverse and consists of both men and women, whether they are veterans or non-veterans. This article is an attempt to educate about some of the extensive work done on behalf of veterans in the State of Wisconsin. Every month there is a donation made to the Wisconsin community-based outpatient clinics. They are located in Beaver Dam, Chippewa Falls, Clark County, Superior and Wausau. There are also contributions made to the national veteran’s hospitals, Zablocki VA in Milwaukee, Wm. S. Middleton VA in Madison and Great Lakes VA in Tomah. Also included in this endeavor are the two state veterans hospitals in Union Grove, King, in Waupaca and Chippewa Falls (new this year). Individual Wisconsin Lodges have their own veterans programs in honor and benefit to veterans. They range from luncheons to entertainment and bowling events. The activities that are held are reported on at the State Convention and Conferences. Most noteworthy is the fact that there has been over $10,000 devoted each year. The Elks Veterans Service Commission (National) provided at total of $11,166, used for a variety of purchases including welfare assistance, transportation costs, coffee (including equipment), veterans at Camp Wawbeek, newspapers and magazines, clothing, bowling repairs, television contracts and funds for Re-Creation appearances at state and national VA hospitals in Wisconsin. The committee has an additional $20,000 received from the Wisconsin Elks Association, which is approved by the Wisconsin Elks Veterans Committee, for use dependent on the need. Wisconsin collected over 400 deer hides, which the Elks Service Commission have tanned and made into fingerless gloves for wheelchair veterans. There are hours and dollars devoted to veterans programs designed to keep Elk members true to their pledge: “SO LONG AS THERE ARE VETERANS, THE BENEVOLENT AND PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS WILL NEVER FORGET THEM”. Our freedom we enjoy today is because of veterans. OLE & LENA

Ole and Lena were on their first jet plane ride. At each stop on their flight across the country, the plane would land, taxi to the terminal gate and the red fuel truck would drive up to refuel the big bird. At Pittsburgh, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas…each time the plane taxied to the gate a red fuel truck would pull up beside it. As Ole and Lena landed in Los Angeles, Lena leaned back in her seat and sighed. “Imagine dat Ole,” she said, “we just soared across the country at 600 miles an hour!!!!” “Va,” said Ole, “dat’s really something’…and you know, dat little red truck didn’t do too bad either!!!”
