Business-aligned IT architecture must provide the ability to sense changes in the environment and respond quickly with reconfi gured systems. To provide that kind of agility, IT needs a solid foundation of standards-based enterprise software and a library of reusable enterprise assets.

The technologies and methodologies to make agile IT possible are the subject of Enterprise Architect Summit 2004, the only conference that combines enterprise technology directions with a focus on architectural discipline. Those two facets, refl ected in our tracks for Strategy and Best Practices, provide a complete prescription for enterprise architecture—both what to do and how to do it.

We’ve added all kinds of new features to this second meeting of the EA Summit. Three in-depth workshops provide hands-on learning opportunities in .NET and J2EE enterprise architecture, and on services-oriented architectures. The Whiteboard Invitational brings to life a popular feature from Enterprise Architect Magazine, in which fi ve forward-thinking CTOs give their take on advanced architectural concepts.

We also have a strong program of implementation case studies, with four organizations from key industry sectors presenting on their enterprise architecture projects and initiatives. Also new are four birds of a feather sessions covering special interests from government EA and to EA in the organization.

Of course, you can also expect to hear the unexpected from four keynote speakers, some still to be announced.

We’ve packed a lot into Enterprise Architect Summit 2004 because there is a lot for enterprise archi-tects to learn and share. Come to our beautiful conference location for three days of challenging ideas, in-depth learning, and peer interaction. It’s your community. I hope to see you in Rancho Mirage.

At-a-Glance

Best Practices for .NET Enterprise ArchitectureKeith Pleas, Guided DesignThis workshop shows architects how to design, build, and manage a service oriented architecture using the Microsoft .NET platform that also interoperate with J2EE. Both applications and operations infrastructure will be explored at conceptual and logical levels and architects will learn what functional and non-functional requirements can be met by Microsoft’s .NET Framework, Windows platform, and ap-propriate application integration services. Also presented will be Microsoft’s rapidly emerging prescriptive design patterns and operational practices guidance covering such important topics as performance, security, and J2EE integration.

ZapThink’s Road Map to SOA AdoptionRon Schmelzer and Jason Bloomberg, ZapThinkCompanies seeking to implement IT infrastructures that enable business agility have found that service-oriented architectures (SOA) based on Web services provide a cost-effective approach. This workshop provides com-panies of all sizes and industries with a detailed plan for SOA adoption, including the steps and phases by which companies can move from today’s brittle infrastructures to loosely-coupled asynchronous applications and systems. The session covers concepts in point-to-point Web services implementations for integration; securing, managing, and adding process layers to these services; implementing registries and management for loose coupling; moving to asynchronous invocations for greater reliability; and con-cepts in virtualization, grid computing, and more.

Best Practices for J2EE Architecture and DesignPeter Varhol, contributing editor Java Pro MagazineThis workshop provides architects with fundamental principles for designing and building service-oriented architectures that stand the test of time in the enterprise. It will focus on J2EE design principles, with an emphasis on identifying and correcting poor or inefficient designs. It will look at the use of patterns in application design, and how to make patterns bullet-proof by testing and evaluating their implementation throughout the application lifecycle, and use that information to make corrections to pattern libraries. Participants will also look at patterns for creating secure application architectures within the SOA, and inte-grating Java and .NET services together in a single SOA.

Metropolis–a Metaphor for the Evolution of ITPat Helland, Architect, .NET Enterprise Architecture Team, Microsoft

What can IT learn from the history of our cities? This talk will examine the changes that occurred in independent and largely disconnected cities as they were rapidly connected by railroads causing dramatic shifts in standardization, manufacturing, and retail. Extending the metaphor, we can com-pare factories with applications, transportation with inter-application communication, manufactured goods with structured data, retail with business process, urban infrastructure with IT infrastructure, and city government with IT governance. From green field to industry to urban blight, where do we go from here? This analogy offers some interesting insight into where we are going in information technology and a framework to understand the current trend towards service oriented architectures and Web services in our enterprise customers.

Solving Real-World IT Architectural IssuesCross the abyss to an IT architecture that is strategically focused, value-orient-ed, and responsive to change. Join Chris Barlow, David Marks and Janaki Akella of McKinsey & Company for this engaging talk.

Managing Architecture: Lessons for the Real World

Cross the abyss to an IT architecture that is strategically focused, value-oriented, and responsive to change. This session provides a framework for developing end-state architecture, and suggests alternative approaches for getting from here to there. Architectural methods and strategies are illustrated with real-world examples from leading McKinsey clients.

Chris Barlow is a partner in the business technology offi ce of McKinsey & Co.

Managing EA Artifacts and Assets

By adding an asset-centric approach to governance of enterprise architecture artifacts, IT organizations can more quickly achieve the benefi ts of their EA program. This session will focus on best practices for design, development, and management of software assets to help organizations implement an EA initiative. Key concepts of asset-based development and expanding software asset management enterprise-wide will be examined.

Charles Stack is founder and CEO of Flashline. Grant Larsen is director of reuse strategies for IBM Rational.

Case Studies: Pfi zer & Capital One

Capital One’s fi ve-stage process for system evolution focuses on architecture deliverables that yield business value in cost and time-to-market reduction and game-changing capabilities.

Art Akerman and Jeff Tyree are enterprise architects at Capital One.

Pfi zer’s enterprise-wide SOA establishes a foundation for next generation infrastructure. allowing business units to be more agile moving forward.

Martin Brodbeck is director of applicaiton architecture at Pfi zer Global Pharmaceuticals.

Unifying Data, Documents, and Processes

Despite the similarities between data and documents, it is common today to have completely different systems and business processes dealing with data and document processing. This leads to duplicated infrastructure, misaligned knowledge, and unwieldy business processes. Implementation of a process-centric SOA leads to a robust enterprise architecture in which document-style semantic service methods interfaces can be created.

Boris Lublinsky is an enterprise architect with CNA Financial Services.

Architectural Implications of Outsourcing

Outsourcing of technology services is more than a cost-saving business tactic; it can be a smart strategy to gain competitive advantage and increased focus on core competencies. Which IT functions and services make sense to outsource and how does enterprise architec-ture need to adapt to enable strategic outsourcing? How does the inevitable rise of outsourc-ing impact IT operations?

Adam Kolawa is the CEO of Parasoft Corp.

Managing Services-Oriented Architectures

To realize the benefits of services-oriented architectures, companies need to deploy top-down management technologies that control access, ensure service-level compliance and business availability, perform root-cause analysis, and more easily respond to changes in the environ-ment. This session examines state-of-the-art approaches for managing the complexity of emerging SOA topologies.

Vinu Sundaresan is the chief technology officer for Collation. Frank Martinez is the CEO of Blue Titan. Dan Foody is chief technology officer for Actional.

Enterprise Service Bus

The enterprise service bus (ESB) is a new kind of middleware that supports services-oriented interactions between enterprise applications. The ESB is primarily concerned with the program-to-program communications necessary to support services-oriented interactions and combines messaging, transformation, and content-based routing. This session examines alternative approaches.

Enterprise Architect Summit 2004 dives into more how-to sessions and case studies that illustrate

practical application for an agile IT.

Enterprise Architecture Maturity Model

The enterprise architecture discipline has matured at a tremendous pace in the last 24 months. This session will analyze the typical phases of maturity of enterprise architectures efforts, and illustrate how different enterprises in different phases address the direct relation-ship between business strategy, IT strategy, enterprise architecture, strategic enterprise pro-grams, and individual projects. Based on this context, it will analyze various management, architectural, and technical best practices and approaches, both theoretical and pragmatic, used by successful CIOs/CTOs, enterprise architects and IT planners.

Peter Herzum is founder and president Herzum Software and senior consultant for the Cutter Consortium.

The Darwinian Approach to Application Management

With the adoption of service-oriented architectures, companies can use a “Darwinian” ap-proach to application management. With applications running on a common infrastructure, developers can quickly build them in a parallel environment, solving individual business problems, and then weed out those that do not meet performance requirements. The session will cover how to apply this approach to application development in today’s service-based environments.

Dan Foody is chief technology offi cer of Actional Corp.

Case Studies: Best Buy and NetJets

Best Buy applied the PROACT methodology to realize the power of service-oriented archi-tecture and Web services for creating target systems architectures and roadmaps, and for suggesting more fundamental enterprise transformations.

Eric S. Dungan and Chris Evans are enterprise architects at Best Buy.

To ensure up-to-date information access from multiple data sources, NetJets implemented an enterprise data layer as part of its Intellijet fl ight management system.

Bram van der Ploeg is chief technology offi cer for NetJets.

Model Strategy and Mission in UML Profi les

To address the challenge of modeling strategy, mission, and business drivers in UML, enter-prise architects extend the semantics of the UML reference metamodel by including concepts from a problem domain. The session applies this technique using concepts derived from the Federal Enterprise Architecture program management offi ce’s Service Component Reference Model using stereotypes, tagged values, and constraints.

Richard Murphy is chief architect at Blueprint Technologies.

Enterprise architects struggle to tame legacy data infrastructures by using object-relational mapping to abstract data source complexity—critical so that consistent, accurate information is immediately available throughout the business. This session focus on the state-of-the-art in data integration technologies.

Chris Keene is CEO of Persistence Software.

Service Orchestration with BPEL

Advances in technology standards for workflow, business process management, and service orchestration point the way to a process-centric model for enterprise application integra-tion. In particular, the universal reach and adoption of Web services makes the emerging service-oriented orchestration standard, Business Process Execution Language (BPEL), an especially attractive proposition. This session covers latest developments in BPEL and other process technologies.

Doron Sherman is chief technology officer of Collaxa. James Clark is an XML developer at Microsoft.

Reuse Strategies

To more effectively create and deliver custom applications that meet business needs, IT or-ganizations are seeking new approaches to boost developer productivity and software quality. Software asset management approaches capture a company’s technical assets, map them to their business and technical models, and allow developers to easily retrieve services and components that fit their requirements. Pattern-based development facilitates reuse of pre-defined designs, structures, and code, and captures the knowledge of enterprise architects within an organization.

Brent Carlson is VP of technology for Logic Library. Mike Sawicki is a technical manager with Compuware.
