Life and Liberty

In Eastern France, outside a little town named Bony, there is a large, American cemetery on the site of the Battle of the Somme during World War One. The people of the town hold this sacred ground near to their hearts. For they realize that the men who are buried there and the American soldiers, who followed them nearly 25 years later, twice freed them from an oppressive tyranny. The people of Bony care for the cemetery and welcome visiting Americans with open arms.

A few days from now we will celebrate the birth of freedom in this country. We recognize this liberty as a God-given right. I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said, “The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time.” Freedom does not continue to thrive unless it is nurtured; it does not possess the quality of inertia. We can passively nurture it by recognizing its value, honoring those who defend it, and passing along its virtues to our children. Actively, we nurture it by being involved in the business of governance from the local level to the national. Staying informed, supporting causes that promote freedom, and, most importantly, voting for those who support your values and beliefs.

Spiritual freedom likewise must be nurtured if it is to thrive in our homes, church, and land. Passively we need to support Godly causes and teach spiritual truth to our children. Actively we nurture spiritual freedom by sharing the gospel with those around us and by demonstrating the mercy and grace of Christ to the needy among us. Enjoying freedom is good; being a free people is better. Likewise being at church is good, but being the church is what is required.

Evening Worship Service

Join us on Sunday, July 8, at 6:30pm in the Worship Center for our next Sunday Evening Worship Service. We will hear about how God was seen and shared on the Haiti Mission Trip. Be sure to mark your calendars and join us as we study God’s Word and worship together.

Harvest America

“In 1990, Greg Laurie, Senior Pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship, began holding large-scale public evangelistic events called Harvest Crusades. Since that time, more than 4,405,000 people have attended Harvest Crusades events around the United States, ranging from the annual event at Angel Stadium in Anaheim to Madison Square Garden in New York City. Pastor Laurie spoke to 50,000 people at a 2011 Harvest Crusade in Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium. Harvest Crusades have also been held internationally in Australia and New Zealand. More importantly, more than 370,900 people have registered professions of faith through these outreaches.” “Harvest America is an opportunity for hundreds of host locations to join together with Greg Laurie to share the gospel via a nationwide simulcast event on August 26.” Join us at First Baptist Simpsonville as we host this compelling simulcast. We are excited about how God will use this powerful event to reach our community for Him. Be sure to invite your friends, co-workers and neighbors to join us for this awesome event!

I hope that your summer is off to a great start! God is certainly at work in and through First Baptist. I want to take a minute to encourage you in your work for the Lord. So many of you have made a great impact this summer in your service to the Lord through VBS, Beach Camp, coaching, mission trips, and the list goes on. Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” May the Lord continue to empower you and bless you in your work for the Kingdom of God!

Here are some upcoming opportunities to serve the Lord and/or grow in your walk with Him:

• Upward Flag Football registrations are going on now! Registration forms are available on our website, in the Church Office, and on Sunday mornings! The early registration cost is $60 until July 20. After July 20, registration is $70. The deadline to sign up is July 28. Upward is an awesome ministry. We are amazed every year at how God works in the lives of those involved. If you have any questions, or are interested in coaching a team, please contact Doug McCarthy at [email protected].

• Our next Getting to Know You Dinner will be Sunday, July 29, at 6:00pm, in the MPAC. This is a great opportunity for those who are visiting the church to learn more about FBC and to get to know the staff in a small group setting. Dinner is free and childcare is provided. Sign up by calling the Church Office. We look forward to getting to know you better!

• Our Fall Marriage Retreat will take place September 21-23 this year. Experience a great weekend in beautiful Charleston, draw closer to your spouse, and enjoy great times of fellowship. Registration information is now available in the Church Office and Worship Center lobby.

Making a Difference

Thank you to all of the individuals and C4 groups who gave to help provide food for World Changers, a group of hard-working, young missionaries! Your gift helped to make this year a great success!

A "Wonder"-ful week!

Vacation Bible School is always a rush! We had the chance to see literally hundreds of kids walk through the doors of our Worship Center and hear about our awesome God and His incredible power! We also had the ultimate opportunity to see so many kids ask Jesus to be their Lord and Savior! There is nothing more powerful than that! You will have the opportunity to be a witness to this power in the coming weeks as you see several of these kids step into the waters to be baptized. I can't think of a better way to spend a week! Thank you to Michelle, Brandy, Denise, and all the great leaders and volunteers who made this week one that we will never forget!

Discovery Class

Our next Discovery Class will be Sunday, July 15, at 10am, in the Media Center. This is a great opportunity for you to discover the unique gifts that God has given to you that will help draw others to Him and build up the body of Christ! Drop by our GroupLife booth on Sunday morning or contact Kim at [email protected] for more information or to sign up!

Middle School

Keep in mind that we are planning to have a Sunday School class offering for our youth in Middle School and their families at the 8:45am hour starting in the Fall. More info to come soon, but please keep this in mind as a viable option for you and your family as you enter a new school year this Fall.

Changes are coming to the Heartbeat!

Look for a new format to begin soon!
