REVELL EXPANDING MODEL KIT LINEUPHelping a new generation “Build & Play”

Revell is introducing a series of changes in its plastic model lineup over the next several months. Great Planes spoke with Revell Vice President and General Manager Lou Aguilera about the changes. This month, he discusses new “Build & Play” SnapTite® models and what makes them ideal for today’s younger child and parents.

GPD: What led Revell to expand its plastic model line?

Lou: Our goal is to grow and expand the market by developing product for today’s younger child and parents. Our research shows that parents want to get their kids more focused on developmental and creative activities. They need help understanding our product so they can make informed buying decisions.

The attention span of children has changed over the years. So our product line is evolving to attract new consumers at a younger age, hold their interest, and provide a clearer progression from beginner kits to more advanced models.

Revell will be rolling out changes in several phases, starting with the SnapTite “Build & Play” 2015 Ford Mustang GT! This licensed model of the 50th anniversary edition Mustang is getting attention all over the world at auto shows, on top of the Empire State Building and even in outer space! Like all the new “Build & Play” products, the Mustang GT is durable and ready for play.

GPD: Why simplify SnapTite product?

Lou: We spent a lot of time watching how young children interacted with our product – how they put them together and what they did with the fi nished models. They wanted to get through assembly quickly so they could crash them and play with them, like toys.

With that in mind, we reduced the number of parts, made the model more durable

and included rolling wheels. Now the product is suitable for an even younger age group than before.

GPD: What’s the youngest age you’d recommend for this product?

Lou: A six-year-old can follow the simple, illustrated instructions and complete the few building steps successfully. These products have fewer than 15 pieces and require no tools, gluing or painting. Until now, SnapTite kits were recommended only for ages 8 and older, so now we’re opening up the hobby to lots of kids who couldn’t participate before.

Although the parts count has been lowered, the build process still helps younger children develop their dexterity and understanding of spatial relations. Young builders can take pride in their effort – “I made that!” – and start playing with the model only 15-30 minutes after opening the box.

These cars also have a nice realistic appearance with interior detail that’s usually not found at this price and age level. Detail is important. It’s one of the elements that makes model building so much fun, even at the earliest skill level.

New packaging also plays a big part in communicating the improvements. And, this is only the fi rst phase of what Revell has coming. Additional improvements are on the way that will make buying decisions easier for parents and keep new modelers fully engaged and moving forward.

The world got its fi rst close look at the Ford 2015 Mustang GT when it headlined Detroit’s North American Auto Show in January. A month later, the new coupe received the red carpet treatment at the famous Chicago Auto Show.

At both Chicago and Detroit, eager young children — more than ten thousand— took part in Revell-sponsored Make ‘n Take™ events that featured the SnapTite 2015 Mustang GT model kit. To their great delight, the boys and girls were invited to put together their own Mustang and take it with them after the show. The SnapTite Mustang has also been a popular giveaway item at auto shows. Revell distinguished its special “Auto Show Edition” of the model by placing a unique stamp on the bottom. Not surprisingly, these have already become prized items for collectors.

Fifty years ago, Ford launched the Mustang legend by literally “putting Ford on top of the world.” They placed a Mustang convertible 86 stories above the streets of New York, on the Empire State Building’s Observation Deck. It seemed only fi tting to recreate the spectacle for Ford’s 50th anniversary celebration this

German-built Focke-Wulf fi ghters were superior to most early Allied fi ghters, enabling them to rack up massive kill tallies. They were so impressive that the Axis powers were willing to risk shipping them across hostile territory to Japan. The IJAAF received one Fw 190A-5 for testing and evaluation during the Second World War. Developed by Nakajima, the amphibious A6M2-N allowed the Japanese to defend their remote bases in the Aleutian and Solomon Islands. Strike aircraft from the USS Midway shot down the fi rst enemy aircraft in the Vietnam War, and made the last air-to-air kill as well. The Skyhawks Midway transported profoundly affected the War by providing strategic strikes, close air support and combat evacuation. During their fi rst deployment to the theatre, A-4E Skyhawks were responsible for carrying out most of the strike missions against Viet Cong and NVA positions. Once there, the Stratotanker hooks its refueling boom to the circling bomber to keep the strategic bomber force ready to make an atomic strike 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For years, bombers had been escorted only part of the way to their targets by fi ghters and then went in unescorted. This resulted in extremely heavy losses. The arrival of the Mustang, however, meant that on most missions bombers were escorted all the way to their targets. Goring himself reportedly said, “When I saw Mustangs over Berlin, I knew the jig was up.” He couldn’t have been more right. Kit features two decal sets for 82nd Air Force planes.
