BUILD YOUR OWN CIRCUS Shoebox approx. (290mm x 200mm) • Construction paper • Cardboard • Acrylic paint • Paint brush Pipe cleaner or toothpick • Scissors • White glue • Sticky tape 1. Find a shoebox or a large box. If your shoebox lid is attached to the main box, cut the lid off of your box. Turn your box on it’s side so that you have a puppet theater or diorama. 2. Paint the outside of your box with red and white or red and yellow circus stripes using acrylic paint. 3. Colour the inside of your diorama by either painting it or covering it with colored paper. The bottom will be your stage and the back will be the backdrop. 4. Make a circus tent paper frame by printing the template on the next page onto construction paper and cutting them out. Some notes on making these paper walls: Each paper wall should be as tall as your box, with a little extra length for a top tab. If necessary, make size adjustments by trimming along the sides or bottom of the paper walls. 5. Draw and cut out a paper roof for your circus diorama. Use the template on page 3 as an example. Estimate its size in reference to your box, including the paper walls. 6. When you’re happy with the size of your paper roof and walls, draw circus stripes on each piece and paint the stripes red and white. 7. Once the paint has dried, use white glue to attach the walls and roof to your box. The best way to glue on the roof is with your box diorama lying down. You can place another box or object under the paper roof to keep it at a flat and level position as the glue dries. 8. And of course, no circus tent is complete without a flag. Cut out a paper triangle and glue this on one end of a toothpick or pipe cleaner. Tape this flag to the top of your roof. 9. Cut out your circus characters. Fold along the dotted line and apply glue where it says “glue”. Glue the tab to the back of the character so that it can stand up on it’s own. You can start this step while waiting for paint or glue to dry. August 2013 release $AU12.95
