2013-2014 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
Building a Stronger Community
Our MissionThe Community Foundation for the Greater
Capital Region strengthens our community by
attracting charitable endowments both large and
small, maximizing benefits to donors, making
effective grants, and providing leadership to
address community needs.
Our VisionThe Community Foundation for the Greater
Capital Region was founded in 1968 by a group
of prominent local residents who shared a belief
that by collectively investing our charitable
resources, we could grow them over time to
benefit our community far into the future.
Today, the Foundation has more than $63 million
in assets, and in 2013, distributed more than
$4.87 million each year in scholarships to local
students and grants to nonprofit organizations.
As the needs of the greater Capital Region
become more complex, the Foundation is proud
of its role as a leader in responding to needs and
leveraging support for emerging issues. Together
with our Board of Directors and the support of
our community, we look forward to working
with donors, community leaders and volunteers
to respond to issues with flexibility, creativity
and efficiency.

Dear friends:It has been an incredible year at the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. The Foundation hit several new high points during the 2012-2013 year:
The Foundation awarded more than $4.87 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and
scholarships to local students in 2013, up from $4.45 million in 2012 and $3.3 million in 2011.
Not only did the Foundation provide more support to organizations and programs in 2013 thanin years past, the number of grants also increased. The Foundation awarded 1,190 grants in 2013,compared to 1,101 grants in 2012 and 938 in 2011.
The Foundation added 22 new charitable funds to its family of charitable support in 2013. Thesenew funds, which are listed on page 12, were each tailored to the donor’s philanthropicintentions and guided by the Foundation’s deep knowledge of our community.
These numbers are impressive, but at the Foundation, we are impressed by the individual stories behindthe donors, the grants and the community change they inspire. What follows is a combination of stories ofimpact that include the passion of our donors, the skill of volunteers, staff and community partners and theinnovation of our nonprofit partners. Together, we are building a stronger community.
In partnership with our donors, the Board and staff of the Community Foundation are proud to encouragecollaborations between nonprofit organizations so that deep-rooted community issues can be addressed innew and effective ways. We’re grateful to our donors for their partnership in, and enthusiasm for, informedphilanthropy, and grateful for the guidance we receive from some of our area’s top professional financialadvisors, which ensures the Foundation operates from a stable, sustainable fiscal base.
The Community Foundation is dedicated to building a strong community through philanthropy. In thisReport to the Community, you will learn how the Foundation works with its partners to serve theresidents and organizations of the greater Capital Region and beyond through partnership, fundingopportunities, and leadership.
On behalf of the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors and staff, we are deeply grateful to thegenerous donors and community partners who helped the Foundation reach such great heights.

The major part of Saratoga Shakespeare’s
summer performance season has just
ended, and I have a moment to extend a
sincere thank you for the wonderful series
of workshops which you coordinated. I
participated in all four sessions of the
Capacity Building Mini Grant Program and
each session was well organized, well
presented and filled with vital material for
all in attendance.
I had a unique perspective: I attended as
the executive director of The Saratoga
Shakespeare Company, but I also serve on
the board of The International Center of the
Capital Region. From my dual perspectives,
I felt that I was participating in a Masters’
degree-level intensive program.
Last year, as part of an emergency
measure, I stepped into the role as
Executive Director of Saratoga
Shakespeare, but I knew that I had a lot of
learning to do. (NYCON Executive
Director) Doug Sauer’s presentations on
the duties and responsibilities of a board
of directors and the NYS Revitalization
Act contained extremely pertinent
material for Saratoga Shakespeare as an
organization in transition. Each session
proved to be helpful, thought-provoking

and provided an important
stepping-stone in my education as
an executive director.
I also want to express my gratitude for the
“Office Hour” meetings, which provided a
thorough introduction to the Community
Foundation. I found the session extremely
helpful. It not only introduced me to the
Foundation, but also served as
introduction to the many other nonprofits
who attended. The Office Hour session
provides a “non-official” opportunity for
community nonprofits to learn how we
can connect and assist each other.
Jackie Mahoney also arranged for me to
meet individually with her. She took the
time to learn more about the Saratoga
Shakespeare Co. and to share vital
information about the Community
Foundation.
I have a lot of work in front of me, but the
workshop sessions and additional learning
opportunities have provided guideposts to
help me build a thriving arts organization,
which like the Foundation, seeks to
enhance the quality of life in the region.
Thank you for providing these
opportunities.

There are many ways to support the nonprofit organizations and causes close to your heart through a fund at theCommunity Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. To learn more, please call the Foundation at (518) 446-9638.
Community Impact Funds help the Foundation address the community’s most pressing needs. Donors can rely onthe Community Foundation to identify organizations capable of making the greatest impact in the specific issuearea or region of particular importance to them.
Donor Advised Funds allow donors to recommend grants to support specific charitable organizations. Fundadvisors make grant recommendations; the Community Foundation then vets the recipient nonprofit organizationand handles all legal and administrative details.
Agency Funds help nonprofit organizations build financial stability. The Foundation partners with local nonprofitorganizations to build long-term, sustainable fiscal reserves that can benefit the organization far into the future.
Designated Funds are an easy way to ensure a donor’s favorite nonprofit organization(s) receive grants for aspecific amount of time, or in perpetuity. Donors select specific nonprofits, the Foundation invests the charitableassets, and regularly pays grants to the designated charities.
Field of Interest Funds are established to benefit a donor’s area of interest. The donor specifies an area of interest(such as the arts, education or the environment), and the Foundation ensures grants are made to effective nonprofitorganizations whose programs and services match the donor’s intent.
Community Foundation Operating Funds are a stable, long-term source of revenue for the Community Foundation.Operating Funds are the result of the generosity of donors who have given directly to the Foundation to helppreserve their ability to operate now, and in the years to come.
Scholarship Funds give donors the opportunity to help students realize their educational dreams. Donors candesignate eligibility requirements and selection criteria, and work with the Foundation to name an advisorycommittee to assist with making awards.

and financial training opportunities and
by encouraging nonprofits to utilize our

The board and professional team at

leveraging our knowledge, skills, resources
and influence to improve the operations

When I began working at the Community
Foundation more than a decade ago, the
Foundation awarded about $2 million each year
in grants to nonprofit organizations and in
scholarships to local students. In 2013, in
partnership with our donors and affiliates, the
Community Foundation gave nearly $5 million in
grants and scholarships.
One of the most interesting parts of my work is
getting a bird’s-eye view of issues being addressed
by local nonprofit organizations through grant
applications. Reviewing grant submissions helps the
Foundation to understand growing issues in the communities we serve,
and it allows us to respond proactively.
The Community Foundation is many things. The Foundation is a
philanthropic partner for donors, a resource for professional advisors, a
leader and partner in the Capital Region nonprofit community... and a
grantmaking organization.
The Foundation’s unique view on nonprofit activities and emerging
community needs allows us to be a better partner to local nonprofit
organization. We encourage collaboration between agencies and leaders,
so that organizations can serve shared audiences better and most
efficiently. We work with organizations such as the New York Council on
Nonprofits (NYCON) to provide training that addresses knowledge or
experience gaps in the nonprofit community. We work with Foundation
donors to educate them and encourage them to fund programs and
organizations that are tackling issues effectively and efficiently.
Through strategic grantmaking and the support of the Foundation’s
donors, the Foundation is helping to build a stronger community for all
those who live, work and visit the greater Capital Region. It’s a privilege
to direct the Foundation’s grantmaking, and a true pleasure to see our
grantmaking grow each year.

However, there is benefit beyond theindividual participants and theirorganizations. The cohort-based design ofthe year-long program allows us to bringtogether leaders and emerging leadersfrom like-organizations to fostercooperation and collaboration. Oneoutcome: the completion of a Capstone
Project that consolidates session-basedlearning and facilitates collaborationsacross agencies for the achievement ofcommon goals. For example, this pastyear’s animal welfare cohort is datagathering and completing an ambitiousstudy of the services offered, gaps in thecommunity, ways to address gaps andtheir capacity to share resources. Thefellows learn together, work together and the result is an enhanced communityin which the sharing of resources is possible.

Foundation Partners Say …
For more than a decade, the Troy Savings
Bank Charitable Foundation has proudly
worked with the Community Foundation
on funding initiatives for local nonprofit
organizations.
The Troy Savings Bank Charitable
Foundation was established in 1999 to
provide financial support to nonprofit
organizations throughout the greater
Capital Region and the southern
Adirondacks region. Since inception, the
Troy Savings Bank Foundation has
provided more than $9 million in funding
to support local charitable initiatives.
As funding organizations, the Community
Foundation and the Troy Savings Bank
Charitable Foundation have a unique view
on emerging needs and current issues
affecting local communities.
The challenges facing the population of
the greater Capital Region are unique,
numerous and diverse. These challenges
require creative, forward-thinking
responses. By working together, the Troy
Savings Bank Charitable Foundation and
the Community Foundation have been
able to drive greater action and award
larger grants than either organization
could if we acted independently.

The Bethlehem Central Community
Foundation (BCCF) has worked as an
affiliate of the Community Foundation for
the Greater Capital Region since 2011.
BCCF was established in 1998 to support
students and educators in the Bethlehem
Central School District through
grantmaking and scholarships. BCCF
provides funding for initiatives not
traditionally supported by tax dollars,
such as our Classroom Innovation Grants,
which provide funding for unique
educational opportunities and programs
that promote academic achievement.
As an affiliate, the Community Foundation
assists BCCF with administrative and
grantmaking support. This relationship
allows BCCF to reduce operating
expenses by eliminating our need for paid
staff members, office space and
equipment. BCCF also benefits from the
Community Foundation’s sound financial
management, through which our funds
grow over time, increasing BCCF’s ability
to support our community.
In the three years since BCCF became an
affiliate of the Community Foundation, we
have awarded nearly $30,000 in grants.
BCCF’s grantmaking has grown each year,
from $6,000 in 2011 to more than
$14,000 in 2013.

Friends of the Bethlehem Central Community Foundation
We can’t know what the future will bring
for Bethlehem Central School District’s
budget, or what needs will arise for
students. But we do know that our work
with the Community Foundation for the
Greater Capital Region has made it
possible to continue supporting
educational opportunities for teachers
and students in Bethlehem far into the
future. We are grateful for the support and
guidance of the Community Foundation
and their excellent staff, and we look
forward to working with them for many
years to come.
