There is no specific curriculum for intelligence studies programs

They tend to reflect the strengths or resources of the individual college or

university

Private liberal arts colleges are most likely to opt for liberal arts

orientation or intelligence specific programs

• The liberal arts approach emphasizes the liberal arts curriculum supplemented by a few courses related to intelligence:

• History of Intelligence• Strategic Intelligence • Terrorism• Intelligence &

National Security

• The Intelligence Specific approach adds courses in basic skills needed to become entry-level analysts in the IC, law enforcement or the private sector to the liberal arts curriculum:

• Writing for Intelligence• Research Methods• Plus courses in

intelligence theory, internships and a capstone course

Either approach, however, is likely to be Either approach, however, is likely to be multidisciplinary in naturemultidisciplinary in nature

By emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach, an intelligence program can get the entire

faculty to “buy in” to the program

Every division/department is contributing to the education of the intelligence student

either by teaching required courses or offering electives that will add to the

student’s general knowledge base

With the understanding that it takes at least 5 years to properly train an analyst, the focus

must be on teaching students the basic techniques analysts need while emphasizing the development of their critical thinking and

communications skills

Notre Dame College, a Catholic institution in the tradition of the Sisters of Notre Dame, educates a diverse population in the

liberal arts for personal, professional and global responsibility

A program in intelligence studies should reflect the college’s mission

Page 9: Building an Undergraduate Program at a Small Private Liberal Arts College

At Notre Dame College an Intelligence Specific approach was taken

1. The combination of applied and theoretical courses in intelligence analysis would create a true liberal arts intelligence studies curriculum emphasizing critical thinking, research and communications skills

2. The program would be supplemented by the College’s general education requirements and a diverse selection of upper level course electives which would further strengthen critical reasoning and communications skills

3. Requiring foreign language study would revive a dormant language program

4. The faculty would more readily accept and approve a program which built upon the College’s liberal arts tradition, while teaching specific professional skills to prepare students to compete successfully in the workplace
