Building AND CONSTRUCTION Materials for Sustainable Development

Building AND CONSTRUCTION Materials for Sustainable Development

Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

Sustainable MaterialsSustainablematerials are those materials that provide environmental, social and economic benefits while protecting public health and environment over their whole life cycle, from the extraction of rawmaterialsuntil the final disposal.

Green MaterialA green material is one that simultaneouslydoes the most with the least, fits most harmoniously within ecosystem processes, helps eliminate the use of other materials and energy, andcontributes to the attainment of a service-based economy.Based on environmental concerns7 April 20173IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

Environmental Concerns through regulations Rivers, Water Bodies and Sea - waterGround surface - earthAir Inter-relationEco-system7 April 20174IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

Environmental Concerns in construction Civil construction activities i.e. Buildings and other engineering structuresNatural resources/materialsWater (pollution)Air (dust)NoiseConstruction activities affects eco-system7 April 20175IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

How to make balance between development and eco-system ?

Better we learn early as not only public but courts/tribunals are going to ask us this vital question. 7 April 20176IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

TheAarey Milk Colonyis situated in Goregaon East, Mumbai, established in 1949 and officially inaugurated by the then PM in 1951, having gardens, a nursery, lakes, an observation pavilion, picnic facilities, and milk plants, cattle farms and poultry farm.

building Materials and Environmental RegulationsAs per The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, environment includes water, air and land and the inter-relationship which exists among and between water, air and land, and human beings, other living creatures, plants, micro organism and property. 7 April 201716IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

other living creatures, plants, micro organism; part of eco-system7 April 201717IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

Any filling disturbs living creatures, plants and micro-organism on ground7 April 201718IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

Such activities also disturbs living creatures, and micro-organism in water 7 April 201719IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

And even ...............7 April 201720IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

Smog/air pollution disturbs living creatures, plants and micro-organism

7 April 201721IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

So, please remember, these all activities are going to affect construction activities due to environmental concerns so sustainable development is only the answerwhich is to be properly defined before the courts considering engineering concerns7 April 201722IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

Cellulose bricks

The patented mixture contains cellulose, cement, sand, and binders. The cellulose, from sawdust, makes up about 50 per cent of the mix, and the mixture does not need kiln firing, saving huge amounts of energy and avoiding pollution.

Clay bricks, 37 per cent stronger than standard clay bricks and do not require kiln firing are manufactured by adding wool fibres and a seaweed polymer to normally available clay7 April 201738IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

WasteBasedBricks, produced by a startup called StoneCycling, creates the bricks by mixing waste from nearby glass, ceramics, and insulation factories, and sometimes rejected clay from traditional brick factories and demolition waste,

Selection criteria for assessment of green materials (Brian Milani, 2001)Resource efficiencyIndoor air qualityEnergy efficiencyWater conservation and Affordability

7 April 201747IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

Resource EfficiencyIncludes utilization of materials that meet the criteria of recycle content, renewable sustainably managed sources, resource efficient manufacturing process manufactured with resource-efficient processes including reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste Locally availability Saving energy and resources in transportation Salvaged, refurbished, or remanufactured for saving a material from disposal and Can be easily dismantled and reused or recycled at the end of their useful life7 April 201748IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai

Indoor Air QualityCan be enhanced by utilizing low or non toxic materials that emit few or no carcinogens, reproductive toxicants, or irritants7 April 201749IBC Seminar at Chnadigarh: Dr K M Soni, Chief Engineer, CPWD, Mumbai
