In the past, it was rare to walk into a bathroom in a home and truly be amazed at how beautiful and serene it appeared. That is not
the case with today’s bathrooms. Manufacturers of tile, cabinets, faucets, fixtures, lighting and other items now offer a multitude of options for homeowners and designers to customize baths and create that “wow” factor.
One of the biggest trends in the bath is the emergence of gold-tone hardware. “In the past year, gold-toned hardware is really hot, and it works well with the whites and blues which are popular in baths right now,” said Dave Megge with Carter Lumber. “We are also seeing the inclusion of dressed-up elements in the bath like brushed, glazed cabinets that resemble pieces of furniture. People want their baths to be more spa-like, so there is an increased demand for panelized shower systems instead of individual tiles,” said Dave. “It is a very clean, sleek look that goes well with frameless shower doors with floor to ceiling glass.”
Mont Surfaces had recently introduced porcelain panels. “This is a fantastic new product that is ideal for a lot of different applications, including in the bath,” said Carol Payto with Mont Surfaces. “The panels work well for tub and shower surrounds, walls, vanities and flooring. Each panel weighs only 93 pounds and is approximately 4’ x 8’, so they can be handled by a two-person team and cut on the jobsite using the ‘score and snap’ method.” The panels are digital images of actual marble, quartz, travertine, etc. “The panels look exactly like the natural quarried material,” says Carol. “Because grout is applied only at the seams of the panels, maintenance is reduced. The panels are also impervious to water, resistant to sunlight and fading and are an economical and stylish choice for bathroom surfaces.”

a bold, contemporary feel with variegated lines of either grays or browns streaking through a pure white base. This collection can be used on shower walls, sinks, and countertops. The smooth, seamless characteristic of this material allows sinks and shower pans to be molded seamlessly, eliminating the need and maintenance of grout. Most importantly, the Linear Collection creates a jaw-dropping, unique effect that hasn’t successfully been seen in the market until now.” Corian® Solid Surface is available in over 100 colors. “It’s not the
speckled product of the 1990s,” said April. “The new collections offer colors and patterns to blend seamlessly with any style.”
Bath Fitter has been renovating bathrooms in both residential homes and commercial / multi-family homes for over 35 years. “Bath Fitter distinguishes itself from the competition based on the fact that we are the only ones in the one-day bathroom remodeling business that measure, make and install our products, start to finish,” said Dan Oakes with Bath Fitter - Livonia. “Bath Fitter employees do all the work. We don’t subcontract any of it. We even employ a Master Plumber who oversees the company’s team of apprentices.” Another feature unique to Bath Fitter is the use of a one-piece wall system which has no seams in the corners. “We offer both tile wall and smooth wall styles in a completely smooth, non-porous, easy-to-maintain acrylic,” said Dan. “We have
10 distinctive wall patterns, including white marble with a grey swirl, and we have additional patterns coming soon.” Bath Fitter does all of its work in as little as one day. “Our one-day installation is a major advantage for apartments and one-bath homes, where a traditional bathroom remodeling project can tie up this vital space for days to weeks,” said Dan. “Even our tub-to-shower conversions, which are currently popular on both the commercial and residential sides, are one-day projects.”
Like other areas of the home, people are mixing more textures and finishes in their baths according to Susan Eble with KSI - Kitchen Suppliers Inc. “I love designing baths, especially master baths, because that is where your day starts and ends,” said Susan. “I believe that a great bathroom improves your whole psyche. Tile, lighting, finishes, and other elements creatively put together can create an amazing space. Clean lines and whites and grays mixed with wood tones are all still popular, and we are seeing a demand for matte black and gold accents. All shades of blues are in right now and they work well with
the whites and grays.” Susan also gets a lot of request for coastal decor as well as feature walls in the bath. “Customers want a statement piece, said Susan. “We often use a large-grained porcelain piece or a slab of granite or quartz tile with a dimension to it, so it’s an eye-stopper when you walk into the bath.”
Bathroom vanities have taken on a style all their own. “Customers are either requesting vanities with decorative legs and open storage, which resemble pieces of furniture, or they are doing contemporary, floating vanities,” said Lauren Cuadrio with Kurtis Kitchen & Bath. “Zero threshold showers, lighted bathroom mirrors, and large-scale tiles with less grout lines are also popular with our customers.” In terms of colors for the bath, Lauren is seeing the grays and whites as still popular. “We are starting to see some more natural tones trending, like browner grays, rather than cooler

grays, for cabinet finishes,” said Lauren. “A lot of the new colors, like taupe, eggplant and rose gold, are pretty warm. On the other end of the scale, matte black is one of the more trendy finishes. It can work well in a variety of settings from super modern to farm house.”
Technology is moving into every area of modern homes, including the bath. “Home automation, including touchless and voice activated products, and the entire technology area in general, will continue to grow,” said Adam Tillman with Kohler. The company has already introduced touchless faucets and soap dispensers for the kitchen and bath. “Kohler Konnect is the new technology that Kohler is including in certain products,” said Adam. “Kohler Konnect smart products integrate Amazon Alexa and enable Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit to allow voice activation for tasks such as filling your bathtub to a preferred preset temperature and depth; turning on the ambient lighting, heated seat or personal cleansing function on your Numi 2.0 Intelligent toilet; or activating the pre-sets for your DTV+™ showering system, which will automatically provide sound, water, steam and lighting to your personalized preferences.” Kohler even has a new mirror, the Verdera Voice Lighted Mirror, which has voice-activation built into it. “You can tell the mirror to play your favorite song, give you the day’s weather, turn the lighting up or down, check today’s to-do list, etc.” said Adam.
Manufacturers, like Kohler, have made it easier than ever to bring that stand-out, statement piece to the bath. A Verdera mirror, or an artfully designed wall of tile, or any combination of the stunning bath products offered today can take an ordinary bath and turn it into a serene oasis where a homeowner can relax and recharge at the start or end of a busy day.n

year at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. HBA and CAM Join Forcesq
HBA and the Construction Association of Michigan (CAM) have joined forces to present Michigan’s largest construction
industry event, the Great Lakes Design and Construction EXPO 2020 (EXPO). This two-day statewide event will bring together residential and commercial designers, contractors, suppliers and service providers, offering networking opportunities and educational workshops designed to support the continued success of Michigan’s building industry.
The EXPO will be held on February 12 and February 13, 2020 at the Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Avenue in Novi, Michigan. Thousands of industry professionals are expected to attend. They will have the opportunity to learn about innovations in technology, products, supplies and services from over 150 exhibitors. Industry specific educational workshops and safety training will be offered, as well, to maximize their skills, competency and professionalism.
The EXPO will also host CAM’s 134th Annual Meeting, the Home Builders Association of Michigan’s Board of Directors Meeting and an Economic Forecast Breakfast featuring keynote speaker Robert Dietz, Chief Economist for the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, DC.
There is no charge to attend the EXPO and visit the exhibit area from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on February 12 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on February 13. There will be fees for some of the additional meetings and workshops featured during the EXPO. Credentials will be mailed to those who register before January 31, 2020. Slips, Trips And Falls

OSHA estimates that slips, trips and
falls cause
approximately
15% of accidental
deaths. Second only
to motor vehicle
accidents. They also
account for between
12% and 15% of
Workers’ Compensation costs. The average
cost for one disabling injury now approaching
$30,000.
From a regulatory standpoint, there are two
types of falls. They are:
1. On same level: high frequency, low severity
2. From elevations: low frequency, high severity
The primary contributing factors, are:
• Wet, slippery, oily floors/stairs.
• Loose, irregular surfaces, such as rocks.
• Insufficient light.
• Uneven walkways or sidewalks.
• Shoes with slick soles or raised heels.
• Moving too fast.
• Carrying items (impair balance, obstruct
vision).
• Objects on the floor (e.g., paperclips,
food).
• Shifting floor tiles.
• Not watching while walking/moving.
• Spilled liquids.
• Cords across walkways.
There are four steps we can take to help
eliminate these types of injuries:
1. Find the problem/hazard. Ask yourself:• Is the area wet, slippery, or cluttered?
• Are employees moving too quickly?
• Is the area poorly lit?
• Are stairs steep or in poor condition?
2. Check it out. Ask yourself:
• Is the problem area near the area high-
traffic?
• Is the area properly lit?
• Are employees wearing proper footwear?
• Are “wet floor” signs in place?
• Are floors being mopped one-half at a
time?
• Is walking surface more slippery due to
its construction?
• Is area outside and subject to weather?
3. Fix it
• If possible, eliminate or control the hazard
immediately (e.g., having spills wiped up).
• If not possible, take steps to alert people
and then determine what can be done to
eliminate or control the hazard.
4. Look at it again
• Ensure the hazard/problem was repaired,
eliminated or controlled.
• Does the area have to be checked
periodically to ensure the hazard/problem
does not return?
• Determine if any training is required for
affected employees.
• Should appropriate signage be posted?
More Prevention Suggestions
• Ensure walkways and stairways are well
lit.
• Portable ladders should be stable and
secure when used, and support a
minimum of 250 lbs.
• Have “wet floor” signs posted where
necessary.
• Apply non-skid coating or floor mats
in areas where floors are likely to be
slippery or wet.
• Encourage employees, residents and
guests to report hazardous situations as
soon as possible.
• Train employees to look for slip/trip/fall
hazards.
• Situations that are identified as hazardous
should be investigated and corrected as
soon as possible.

Uniform Assignment of Rents Legislation Proposed
Legislation introduced in October in the Michigan House of Representatives would provide for a uniform act covering assignment
of rents. House Bill 5086, sponsored by Rep. Brandt Iden (R-Kalamazoo), would create the “Michigan Uniform Assignment of Rents Act.” The purpose of the legislation is to create one act providing for the creation, perfection, and enforcement of security interests in rents, while at the same time repealing other sections of law currently covering this. The basis for this legislation comes from the Uniform Law Commission (ULC), which in 2005 released a model version for proposed adoption by every state in the U.S. The ULC is an organization made up of practicing lawyers, judges, legislators and law professors, all of whom are appointed by state governments. ULC seeks to draft model legislation for certain areas of critical state law in an effort to create uniformity and save states from the cost of preparing legislation themselves. The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for action.
HUD Proposes Revision to Disparate Impact Rule
In August, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a proposal to amend its original rule interpreting the Fair Housing Act’s disparate impact standard. Disparate impact is a controversial legal theory, formalized in the 2013 HUD rule which prohibits neutrally-applied practices with a disproportionate impact on protected classes under the Fair Housing Act, even without proving intent to discriminate. A 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs v. Inclusive Communities Project, Inc. upheld the validity of disparate impact liability but highlighted limitations to that liability. The goal of the proposed rule is to align with the limitations cited in the majority ruling in that case to provide more appropriate guidance on what constitutes unlawful disparate impact. n
