OnbehalfoftheOrganisingCommitteeandtheEuropeanAssociationfortheConservationoftheGeologicalHeritage(ProGEO),wearepleasedtoinviteyou to take part in the Xth International ProGEO Symposium. Themeeting isorganisedbytheInstitutoGeológicoyMinerodeEspaña(IGME,theGeologicalSurveyofSpain)andwilltakeplaceinSegovia(Spain)from8thto11thofJune2020.

This symposium is an international event open to scientists, students,educators,professionals,decision-makersandanyoneinvolvedingeoconserva-tion.Thesymposiumisorganized inconjunctionwithseveralgeoconservationorganizationsalsohostingtheirmeetingsinSegoviaduringthesamedates.Theseinclude: aWorkshopoftheIUCNWCPAGeoheritageSpecialistGroup(GSG), the1stWorkshoponGeoheritageofVolcanicIslands, the4thMeetingofProGEO’sSouthwestEuropeRegionalWorkingGroup, ameetingoftheAfricanGeoconservationGroupoftheEU-funded PanAfGeoproject,and ameetingoftheGeoherithageCommissionoftheAssociationof IberoamericanGeologicalandMiningSurveys(ASGMI).

TheSymposiumwillprovidetheopportunitytodiscussthenewchallen-gesandthreats inglobalgeoconservation.Theknowledgeandexperienceac-quiredwithinProGEOduringthelastdecadesatnational,Europeanandgloballevelsprojectsthisscientificorganizationastheinternationalleaderingeocon-servation.Recentdevelopments include issues suchasmethodologies for theinventoryofGeologicalSitesof Interest,geoconservation innaturalprotectedareas,benefitsandimpactofruraldevelopmentandgeotourismingeoparks,le-gislationandmanagementinaglobalconservationframework.TheSymposiumwillpromotecommunicationandcollaborationamongstthedifferentstake-hol-dersandactorsinmoderngeoheritageconservationfromallovertheworldpre-sentatthevariousjointmeetingstakingplaceatSegovia.

ThesymposiumwillbeheldinthebreathtakingcityofSegovia.Thispopulartouristdestinationisrichinculturalheritage,attractionsandevents.ItshistoricalevolutionasCeltiberianfortifiedvillage,Romanfortressandtown,andMedievalwalledvillageandcity,headofavastterritory,hasleftanimpres-siveculturalandartisticlegacy.ItwasdeclaredaWorldHeritageculturalsitebyUNESCOin1985,andisafirst-ratefocusofattractionandreceptionoftouristsnationallyandinternationallyforitsrichandvariedtouristoffer,includinghistoricalmonuments,gastronomyandtraditions.ItisanidealplaceforholdingtheSymposiumenjoyingitsvibrantcultureandacademicatmosphere.

Segoviaislocatedatanaltitudeof1000mabovesealevelinthenorthernflankoftheGuadarra-maRange(IberianCentralSystem)andattheedgeoftheDueroriverCenozoicsedimentarybasin.Duetoitsdiversegeologyresultingfromaninterestinggeologicalhistory,Segoviaalsohasanextraordinarygeologicalheritage,withalmostahundredcatalogedgeositesjustwithinthecityanditssurroundingmu-nicipality,whichareproperlyinventoried,assessedandlegallyprotected.Geotourismactivitieshavebeenextensivelyadoptedbythelocal(municipalandprovincial)governmentsofSegovia,andtherearealreadysignificantinfrastructures,outreachpublications,anditinerariesdesignedforthegeneralpublic,initiati-vesoncitizenstewardshipforgeoconservation,togetherwithmanyotheractivitiesthattakeadvantageofnewtechnologies(seewww.geologiadesegovia.info/en/).

SegoviaislocatedincentralSpain,just90kmnorthwestofMadridanditsinternationalairport(Ma-dridBarajas–AdolfoSuárezAirport,MAD).ItiswellconnectedtoMadridbyhighspeedtrain(AVE,28minu-tesfromChamartinStation),byinter-citybus(60minutes)andbyroad(aboutonehourandahalfride).

Scientific Programme

Thepurposeofthesymposiumistodiscussaboutnewchallengesandopportuni-tiesinvolvedingeoconservationanditsgradualglobalization.Thescientificprogrammewillincludethreedays(9-11thJune)oforalpresentationsandpostersessions,includingahalf-dayintra-meetingitinerary(UrbangeoheritageinSegovia).Duringthesedays(9-11thJune),specificsessiongroupmeetingsandworkshopswillbecarriedoutinSegovia(withtheexceptionofthe1stWorkshoponGeoheritageofVolcanicIslands;seebelowformoreinformation).TheGeneralAssemblyofProGEOwilltakeplaceduringtheeveningofThursday11thJune2020.

TheSymposiumwillcompletethescientificprogrammewithanoptionalpre-sym-posium(8thJune)intensiveshortcourseonGeoheritageInterpretation.Participantswillgetanoverviewofthemostinnovativeandeffectivetechniquesusedforthispublicou-treachtechnique,basedonthewell-provenprinciplesofFreemanTilden.
