Electrical Utility Management Seminar Organised

ICPCI in association with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) organized 2 days National Seminar on “Electrical Utility Management” at Chennai on 17 & 18 July 2013, with Special Focus on: VFD and Building Electrical Safety The objective of the Seminar was,

a. Equip industries with latest trends on efficient O&M practices, Electrical Safety, condition monitoring of electrical equipment’s

b. Develop confidence and increase the capability of plant personnel to equip with best practices in Electrical Engineering

c. Help industries in terms of getting information regarding technology providers, consultants.

The participants included National & International technology providers, experts, academicians, consultants and end users who shared their valuable experiences and knowledge during this technical meet.

Asia Power Quality Initiative Knowledge Platform

A. ICPCI, successfully prepared, co-ordinated and hosted a four day residential workshop on ‘Advancements in Power Quality improvement techniques’ at Trivandrum –Kerala in co-operation with FICCI as National Support Network (NSN) partner, University of Bergamo-Italy, IIT Delhi as Institutional partner and other key OEM partners like Fluke, Dranetz, Unicorn, Jeff Techno, Schneider Electric etc. The workshop, during 26-29th August was attended by twenty four senior level officials from end user industry and few academic faculties.

B. ICPCI signed a MoU to promote PQ amongst EE community and build capacity to address PQ issues faced by industry, with Confederation of Indian Industry, (CII) at Hyderabad. As part of this MoU CII in joint partnership with APQI (Knowledge Partner) hosted a full day session on ‘Electrical Systems and PQ Management’ during their flagship annual event ‘12th EE Summit 2013’ held during 19-22nd Aug’13. This increased PQ outreach with cooperation of industry association. The summit was attended by 272 delegates from industry, IT/ITES sector and Green Building community.

C. ICPCI supported Kongu Engineering College, Erode-Tamil Nadu to host a national seminar on “Electrical Power Quality Issues – Standards, Practices and Research Aspects” in association with both ICPCI and APQI. The daylong seminar on 24th August was attended by 127 academic, student community including 45 local industry engineers. This program was aimed to create interest among academic community to carry out application research on solving PQ issues faced by industries and provided one of its kind first time platform in local area for interaction between academic and industry professionals.

Sustainable Energy:

Distribution Transformer Campaign

ICPCI organised regional workshop jointly with the support of Indian Transformer Manufacturers

Association (ITMA) for northern region states which was held on 24th of September 2013 in New Delhi

to promote Energy Efficiency and reliability of the DTs in order to facilitate the compliance to the

labelling regulations and implementation of quality improvement actions for DTs. Mr. Prakash

Thakkar, Director Technical, Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd graced the event as Chief Guest.

Over 70 delegates attended the workshop, consisting of

transformer manufacturers, utilities, personnel from

Central government, Rural Electric Corporation (REC),

Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Similar workshops are

planned for other regions. (15th November 2013 for

South, December end for West, February 2014 for East).

The summary report of the deliberations of these regional

workshops will be shared with the Ministry of Power and

State Government bodies for improvement in

implementation of energy labelling regulations and quality

improvement actions.

Super-Efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) program launched globally

With ICPCI initiative, for Indian region SEAD program, Mr Anil Naik, Chairman, Rotating Machine

Division, IEEMA held meeting with Ms Kavita Ravi, United States Department of Energy (U.S. DOE)

and CLASP for the Motors Super-Efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) initiative

program for India & requested Indian motor manufacturers to participate in the Global Efficiency

Medal competition. The SEAD Global Efficiency Medal competition showcases the most energy-

efficient motors in order to influence purchasing decisions and transform the market by increasing the

share of energy-efficient products.(For India, the ratings chosen for the competition are 3.7kW &

11kW. To know more about the completion visit: http://www.superefficient.org/motorawards

Partnership with IEEMA

ICPCI in association with IEEMA (Indian Electrical

and Electronics Manufacturers Association) held

talks with the Union Government officials of key

ministries involved in the process of Mandating

standard IS12615 at Delhi, The mandatory process

has been initiated by arranging an regulatory

technical committee meeting consisting of all

stakeholders to be organized by Bureau of Indian

Standards in month of August. For adoption of

IS12615 as mandatory, a formal recommendation

letter from Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce

and Industry has been issued to following key ministries involved in the process, & it is suggested that

this issue may be examined on priority & urgent meeting may be convened involving all stakeholders

Influencing Improved Standards

ICPCI influenced Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to organise the regulatory technical committee

meeting consisting of all stakeholders on 04thSeptember 2013. One of the main agenda points of the

committee deliberation was on how to make IS12615 standard mandatory.

Adoption of IE2 Motors

After ICPCI awareness efforts, two industry units (Reliance

Infra Ltd, Thermal power plant, Dahanu & Kumar Cotton

Mills, Narol) have adopted Energy efficient motors (IE2 &

IE3) for specific projects; The industry unit Reliance Infra Ltd,

Thermal power plant, Dahanu, have already raised enquiries

for IE2 & IE3 motors for replacing old-standard motors and

the Management of Kumar Cotton Mills, Narol, have adopted

the concept of 'Retrofit Project' for replacement of old and re-

wounded motors and have installed/replaced approx. 30

numbers of IE2 motors in their processing units.

Developed calculation tool for Energy Efficient

Motors

Software1: Motor inventory & saving software: For the end user industries to have complete inventory of motors & to analyse the potential motors to be replaced for achieving savings for industry unit.

Software2: Motor energy saving calculator for motor star labelling program in India

Design competition to promote 5mm copper tubes for air conditioners

The National Student Design Competition on designing split air conditioner using 5 mm inner grooved

copper tubes for heat exchangers has been finalised with ISHRAE Student chapter. The winners will

be awarded price money during the International ACREX exhibition being held in New Delhi from 27th

Feb to 1st March 2014. This will help in promotion of 5mm copper tubes for aircons.

Non-Electrical

Antimicrobial Copper:

Third Indian Hospital Adds Copper to Fight Infection

One of India’s most prominent chain of hospitals, the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has announced it will begin installing Antimicrobial Copper as part of its infection control strategy. The 600 bed multi-disciplinary super specialty facility says the copper upgrade will initially target the neonatal and liver transplant Intensive Care Units, and include bed rails, ward trolleys, over-bed tables and door hardware. The hospital plans to monitor infection rates in the renovated ICU’s with an eye to expanding the copper roll out to other wards and possibly across the 10 other affiliated hospitals in its network in southern India. The refurbishment, which is expected to be completed by mid-October, is being undertaken by Copper Front India Pvt. Ltd., the first Indian company accredited to make and sell Antimicrobial Copper products stamped with the global Cu+ brand.
