INTRODUCTION
• School food gardens• Vehicle for spreading knowledge and skills of food
production, creating a culture and love for food thus making the link with nutrition (Laurie et al, 2007);
• Can impact on the health of the children and promote educational skills;
• Positively influence dietary habits for children at an early age, and changes in eating behavior.

INTRODUCTION
• They can complement school feeding programmes and enhance their long-term impact on nutritional status and learning achievements of learners (FAO, 2004);
• School food garden programmes can play an important role in teaching learners about gardening concepts and skills with the aim of increasing home production for household food and nutrition security;
• They can be also used to re-introduce neglected crops in order to promote consumption in the schools.

THE SCHOOL FOOD ENVIRONMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA
• Malnutrition, either over- or under-nutrition, is becoming a major problem in South Africa, especially in children
• Although many schoolchildren have shown knowledge about nutrition and healthy food, the knowledge gained did not influence their daily healthy food choices
• School gardens can play a greater role of making nutrition education a participatory exercise where learners can not only learn about the health part of food • how to grow them• how to choose the crops according to their environment • how to ensure a sustainable supply of a healthy variety of foods

OBJECTIVES
• Establish two school gardens at Bula Dikgoro & Mahlasedi Masana Primary Schools in Mamelodi area that provides vegetables for nutrition to children and adults in the community
• Develop infrastructure required for crop production in the school garden • Develop human capacity through school engagement and onsite training to
transfer skills to the communities • Measure and optimize water use of selected vegetable crops in school gardens
to improve nutritional water productivity of the crops • Implement simple irrigation and nutrient management tools/technologies to
school gardens to improve irrigation management of selected vegetable crops • Improve efficiency in protection of soil and water resources through rainwater
harvesting and reduce nutrient leaching

CHALLENGES OF ESTABLISHING AND SUSTAINING

CONCLUSIONS AND REMARKS
• The project tested various climate-smart agricultural systems including rainwater harvesting, bag system, veggie tunnels etc.
• The bag system showed great potential to improve crop productivity with reduced water utilization, resulting in increased WUE
• Rooftop rainwater harvesting can contribute to approximately 70% additional water supply to dryland crop production
• Identification of water use efficient systems linked to rooftop rainwater harvesting shows a promising approach to strengthen the water-food nexus
• Additional infrastructure support is however required, such as water storage tanks and gutters for rooftop runoff collection

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH
(i) Establishment of household food gardens in nearby communities;
(ii) Support the schools with infrastructure such as boreholes to supplement water
supply during the dry season;
(iii) Introduction of green technology such as solar driven irrigation system to
improve sustainability;
(iv) Conduct research on the impact of vegetable gardens towards meeting dietary
requirements of school children;
(v) Pre-processing at school level to introduce nutritious products such as soup and
veggie drink and include high value crops
(vi) A pilot project has been successfully implemented and shows great potential to
be rolled-out to other schools
