The internal door range is manufactured using traditional stile and rail construction, dowel jointed or one piece slab construction with no joints for maximum strength.

Premium external doors are manufactured using White oak or Meranti to both faces and are constructed in tradition mortice and tenon or a solid one piece specification. At the prestigious Renaissance Club, one of the newest golf courses in Scotland, four innovative air handling units supplied by Air Design are presently recovering heat in the clubhouse. Air Design, part of the Elta Group of companies, supplied the air handling units to mechanical and electrical engineering contractor, Vaughan Engineering, for use within the newly constructed club house. Three of the units were fitted with high efficiency thermal wheels to recover as much heat as possible from the internal space in order to minimise the heating bills of the private club. AHUs from the Air Design range are technically efficient, combining quality component parts with simplicity of design and construction. The bespoke units provide both heating and cooling for ventilated air and the supplied units incorporate a rotary wheel for heat recovery from the exhausted air.Another decisive factor in the specification of the Air Design units was their compactness. As is often the case, the plant rooms at the Renaissance Club are limited in size, so space is at a premium. Consultant engineers on the project, Wallace Whittle of Glasgow, specified use of the Air Design units. The golf club and resort, which opened in 2008 in East Lothian, lies between Gullane and North Berwick, just east of Edinburgh. It nestles on 300 acres of the famous golfing coastline of the Firth of Forth, next to the renowned Muirfield golf course in the most historic golfing area in the world.

D R Services Launches New Edge Seals

Achieving the ultimate in clean aesthetics and effective performance, two new edge seals available from D R Services represent major advances in design. The glass lip and the glass lip slide seals are a quick and almost invisible, but effective and easily adjustable, means of filling the gaps at the junctions of glass doors and walls. They are ideal for retrofitting in almost all glass installations, including shopfronts and shower enclosures. Unlike conventional edge seals that rely on a ‘U’ channel being fitted around the edge of the glass to carry the seal, the glass lip perimeter seal from D R Services is applied to the polished edge of the glass using a high strength transparent adhesive which is waterproof, UV stable and virtually permanent. Once fitted the seal, which can be used on hinged and sliding glass doors, is easily adjusted by simply tearing off the required amount of the lip to meet gaps from 2.5 up

to 7 mm. The glass lip slide seal is designed for sliding glass doors. It consists of a soft transparent seal with an adjustable single lip and is installed on the fixed part of the sliding door to close the gap with the moving part. The lip can be shortened by simply tearing down its length to compensate gaps from 12 to 30 mm. A combination of the two seals will fill the gap between a glass door and the sliding track on the top edge. An acoustic seal for the bottom edge of a slider or pivot door is also available. The acoustic rating of the seals is 38 dB Rw and is better than for brush seals while being less visible and more durable. Global Schindler Award 2015 – Call For EntriesSchindler, the UK’s leading provider of lifts and escalators, has announced a new global design competition for architecture and design students with a total prize fund of US$150,000.

Now open for entries, the competition is a unique opportunity for young architects from across the world to share their ideas for creating open and inclusive urban environments, based on the theme of ‘mobility’.

In the award’s inaugural year, an actual site in Shenzhen in China – a booming commercial and industrial area adjacent to Hong Kong – has been chosen as the subject for urban design proposals. Entrants are being asked to re-imagine the city as an inclusive environment and to examine the mobility systems that helped the city to grow from a fishing village to a global city of 10 million people.

With good urban design, the potential of the existing city can be realised to reduce sprawl, increase access and enhance the public realm.

The Global Schindler Award will allow students to explore some of the most important challenges facing societies around the world – the provision of public spaces, the issue of sustainability and the better integration of economic and political concerns in the built environment.

Commenting on the initiative, Richard Clarke, Sales and Marketing Director at Schindler UK said, “This is an excellent opportunity for architects and urban designers of the future to participate in the vital consideration of livable and sustainable urban environments – in all their complexities. Mobility networks provide access to basic human needs, such as housing, healthcare and welfare – and accessibility must be improved.”

The single-stage design and planning competition is open to final year bachelor students, masters’ students and their international equivalents in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning. Students must work under the supervision of a faculty member and can compete individually or as part of a team.

The award winners will be chosen by an esteemed panel of interdisciplinary judges, including Professor Kees Christiaanse, Chair of Architecture and Urban Design at ETH Zurich (award chair), landscape architect Kongjian Yu of Turenscape, and Professor Farshid Moussavi of Harvard University.

Entry is free. Registration is required by 15th November 2014 and the deadline for entries is 31st January 2015. The awards will be announced in early 2015.

Hunter Douglas Invests In Architecture’s FutureYoung architects, especially, can struggle to distinguish themselves and land that much desired assignment. They must prove themselves – and without recognition or reference projects, that can be difficult. In order to continue to offer an international platform to talented, young designers, while also making excellent graduation projects accessible and providing a broad public with a great source of inspiration, Hunter Douglas has decided to prolong its partnership with Rotterdam’s Archiprix Foundation for another six years. Archiprix International organises a biannual event at which promising young architects from all over the world are invited to present their graduation projects – over 300 universities have submitted entries.

An independent international jury offers the best proposals the Hunter Douglas Awards. Thus young talent is offered a platform on which to inspire in the fields of urban design and (landscape) architecture. The submissions also provide insight into shifts occurring in these fields. Currently, for instance, there is a growing social awareness, with a focus on realising buildings

that are socially relevant. Max Rink, winner of the Archiprix National 2007 and International 2009 awards, views participation as a quality mark: ‘It is a recognition of your skills as an architect, another step on the way towards getting into business.’ Having won the 2007 National Archiprix award and the 2009 International award, architect Max Rink appreciates the importance of participating like no other.

Since his participation, Rink has opened his own office in Rotterdam, called SPRIKK. His graduation project comprised the design of a new market hall in Estonia geared to the country’s economic and social conditions. The rise of large, competitive shopping centres in Estonia has become a threat to the existence of the country’s unique, small-scale markets. In Rink’s design, the markets preserve their characteristic elements, but there is room for economic growth, too. ‘As a young student, I saw the best work presented by earlier generations of Archiprix participants,’ says Rink.

‘I didn’t even dare dream about joining them. It makes being where I am now all the more thrilling. Participating is like getting a quality stamp as a young designer, it’s a form of recognition for good work. Besides that, all Archiprix International participants are offered the option of attending a ten-day joint workshop. I’ve built an interesting network that way. Starting out as an architect can be tough: you have to be good, but you also have to dare. The Archiprix event gives you that little push in the back for

building a successful career.’ Henk van der Veen, director of the Archiprix Foundation, describes the partnership with Hunter Douglas as ‘fruitful’. Heraklith boards are the star of the show, and are breathable thermal and acoustic insulation panels, invented by Heraklith over 100 years ago; the product having recently received massive investment from KNAUF INSULATION to ensure that the genuine Heraklith panels remain the best quality woodwool boards available.The main component is shredded wood, or ‘wood wool’, which gives the product its distinctive appearance. Previously magnesite was used to bind the wood wool, but the latest generation has been updated and now utilises cement to make them weather resistant and sufficiently durable to be used as external wall insulation; additionally offering passive fire protection for up to 90 minutes where required.Although the product has been around for a long time, it very much conforms to modern day requirements, being that the board is manufactured from PEFC certified wood. BRE Partners With Hongsheng Construction & Investment Group To Deliver Sustainable Construction Exemplar In ChinaAs China works towards meeting the commitments made to sustainable building, it is announced that the Building Research Establishment (BRE) has been appointed by Hongsheng Construction & Investment Group Co. Ltd as chief sustainability advisor on a pioneering project to develop a major construction industry zone in ShangRao, China, a major conurbation located in the Jiangxi province which, with the opening later this year of the high speed rail-link, will be just 100 minutes from Shanghai.

The new zone will become an elite address for operators committed to ongoing built environment improvements and is expected to house manufacturers, company headquarters, storage and recourses, trading and service centres and include residential accommodation, hotels, a shopping centre, conference centre and training centres. Hongsheng will develop several zones of this kind after the first zone is designed and built.

Founder and CEO of Hongsheng, Mr Janhu Zhou said; “We are delighted to collaborate with BRE and their key partners to shape the strategy for the zone, which will drive best practice in sustainable construction in the region.”

BRE will provide sustainability guidance in the planning phase for the construction industry zone in order to promote and enable sustainable development at every stage in the delivery process. Hongsheng Group has also enlisted BRE as key client advisor during the initial stages of the project to help arrange visits to construction material suppliers and product manufacturers through its vast network of industry contacts. The aim is to utilise the project and the collaborations formed to work on other new eco developments within the 27,000 sq km city.

Rufus Logan, Director of BRE Scotland who signed the deal on behalf of BRE said: “We have been working with the Chinese government and other key organisations to support the development of local sustainable building frameworks in China. After seeing the technologies showcased on the UK BRE Innovation Park, Hongsheng are seeking to

collaborate with some of the product manufacturers on this exciting project. We look forward to working with them and helping the development achieve its sustainable aspirations.”

The Mayor of ShangRao, Mr Junqing Chen added: “Working with BRE will enable us to share knowledge and expertise in sustainable building in order to drive innovation in China’s construction industry. We hope to collaborate on the development of green building standards to embed sustainability across the construction industry zone and its supply chain.”

Hongsheng Construction& Investment Group Co., Ltd aim to ensure the creation of a masterplan in line with their commitment to sustainable development for this construction industry zone. Therefore, Hongsheng Group has approached BRE to adopt a client advisor role during the initial stages of this project to help support the development of the strategic sustainable objectives for the construction industry zone. The partnership follows a commitment made by Chinese Premier Li-Keqiang to encourage in-depth collaboration between China and the UK on sustainable building development.

In 2011, Premier Li-Keqiang visited the BRE Innovation Park in Watford, Hertfordshire as part of a trade visit to the UK and was impressed by the array of low carbon buildings, technologies and innovations on display. He set out to showcase the best of British green building expertise in China to facilitate export sales for UK companies. Mapei Provides Surface Build-Up At State-Of-The-Art Leisure CentreA high performance ‘single build-up’ Mapei surface system has been installed at West Bromwich’s new state-of-the-art Leisure Centre. Designed and built by Places for People Leisure, in partnership with Pellikaan Construction Ltd and Roberts Limbrick Architects, the new centre for Sandwell Council includes a 25m pool, learner pool, sports hall fitness suite, dance studios, adventure play area and café. The pool and floor installations were carried out by Buckingham Pools, CJM Tiling Ltd and Phoenix Flooring.

Throughout the extensive project, Mapei systems were specified from the substrate to the finishing materials, in order to provide a warrantable system build-up, with Mapei’s Technical Department assisting throughout. The total application included 800 m2 of concrete floor substrate and 2,200 m2 of tile backer board and rendered walls; Mapei products spanned from screed, render and waterproofing, to various tiles adhesives, grout and silicone sealants.

Throughout the pool area, Mapei systems were utilised alongside vitrified ceramics, with porcelain and ceramic tiles installed throughout the remaining ground and first floor areas. Levelling screeds, membranes and waterproofing products installed included: Mapei Nivoplan, Topcem, Ultraplan, Mapelastic, Mapelastic Aquadefense, Mapetex SEL, Mapeband and Mapegum WPS. Relevant substrates were primed with Mapei Eco Prim Grip, prior to the tiles being adhered with Mapei Keraflex Maxi, Mapeker Rapid Set Flex and Adesilex P9 – and grouts specified included Mapei Ultracolor Plus and Keracolor FF. The tiled finish was completed with Mapesil AC, which formed expansion joints and was used as a general sealant.

St Modwen & WDS Call On Panasonic For Great Energy SavingsPanasonic was called upon by Woodhouse Environmental Services Ltd to provide equipment for call centre giant, WDS, to retrofit its busy offices with an energy-efficient Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. Working against strict time and space constraints, Panasonic’s VRF systems coupled with large ducted and wall mounted indoor units were specified for a quick, simple and energy efficient install.

WDS negotiated with the building owners, St Modwen Properties PLC, a multi-million pound property development and investment company, to redevelop one of three buildings at the Discovery Court Business Centre in Bournemouth.

With the brief to remove and replace the old, existing system with a high-

performance, easy-to-install HVAC system, the design and build contractor, Woodhouse Environmental Services Ltd, required a product that offered a large selection of different units, providing a maximum performance system to cater for this large building.

WDS Call Centre (a part of the Xerox group) provides customer service solutions to some of the world’s best known technology and communications brands including Tesco mobile, Google and many other blue-chip brands.

This complete system would need to cater for the high density office, providing exceptional heating and cooling efficiencies whilst maintaining close conditions, introducing continuous fresh air and removing stale exhaust air, ensuring a comfortable work environment at ideal temperatures. The install was to be undertaken whilst the

tenants were still in residence. This meant that it was imperative for staff disruption levels to be kept to an absolute minimum.

Woodhouse Environmental Services initiated a fast track install programme between June 2013 and October 2013, splitting the renovation into three phases to cover each ‘zone’ of the building, satisfying a tight budget, and remaining within the allocated time.

In the first phase, Panasonic’s integrated VRF and heat recovery ventilation systems were installed to replace the existing air cooled chilled water system operating on R22 along with a ducted fan coil system, which no longer provided the efficient and reliable service in this demanding application. Specifying Panasonic’s VRF unit made for an all-round easy-to-use system, whilst it’s clever, innovative integrated technologies meant wasted energy was avoided and significant savings could be made on the buildings annual energy bills. Additional extras including an energy monitoring touch screen control with multi-zone temperature adjustment, making this Panasonic system the efficient, ideal replacement that was so desired.

As part of the second and third phases, Panasonic’s ducted indoor and wall mounted units were also incorporated in the building refurbishment. Not only were these systems integrated to provide fresh air input and stale air removal, but they also fitted the outlined noise criteria. Panasonic was able to supply all of this equipment on short notice so as not to delay the project.

As a result, Panasonic proved to provide the most energy efficient units on the market, suitable for this large-scale project. With approximately 250 members of staff based in each zone, the quick turn-around, replacing the old systems and fitting brand new Panasonic equipment, meant staff were able to move straight back into the refurbished offices immediately on completion. http://panasonic.net

Alternative Provision Academy Adopts Coxdome Enlightenment

One of the first Alternative Provision Academies to be opened anywhere in the country, set up to offer youngsters with a variety of issues fresh education opportunities not available to them through mainstream schools, has undertaken substantial refurbishment work featuring the installation of rooflights and barrel vaults from Jet Cox. The project at the Links AP Academy in St Albans, Hertfordshire, which was successfully completed earlier this year by York based T.A. Roofing, involved the removal of leaking and thermally inefficient existing glass rooflights from toilet blocks: replacing them with triple skin polycarbonate units from the Coxdome Trade Range. Several of these rooflights featured either trickle ventilation or Vent Axia extract ventilation units. Then teaching and circulation areas to the school benefitted from the installation of triple skin Jet Cox Barrel Vaults up to 10 metres in length; admitting ample natural daylight to encourage a feeling of well-being as well as cutting down on electricity usage. In total there were seven Barrel Vaults installed, all 860 mm wide. The first of these was 6565 mm long, while there were four at 8210 mm long, with the final pair reaching 9850 mm in length. The 23 Trade Range Rooflights, meanwhile, included 15 which were 700 mm square, with a further eight measuring 700 x 1500 mm. The Jet Cox Barrel Vault, from their recently expanded bespoke range, is a self-supporting structure, which can span up to seven metres and is custom made using polyester powder coated, aluminium components, while the glazing options range from four-wall, multiwall polycarbonate to quadruple skin solid polycarbonate. They are supplied as a kit of parts for ready assembly on site, while the relatively low loads imposed ensure existing roof structures do not require strengthening. Coxdome further offers a choice of upstands or kerbs manufactured in impact resistant U-PVC to simplify installation for roofers and general builders; while they also contribute to improved thermal performance. In this case, higher than normal upstands were created to allow for future over-laying of the existing felt water-proofing with a new system incorporating an additional thickness of insulation. www.jet-cox.co.uk

King’s College School Bowled Over By Kemperol Roof RefurbishmentSixth form students at King’s College Wimbledon are guaranteed a dry start to the new term, both in the classroom and the cricket pavilion thanks to Kemperol from liquid waterproofing specialists Kemper System.Following installation of the liquid waterproofing system on the sixth form centre, the client was so pleased with the result that they also specified it for the cricket pavilion. The sixth form roof structure itself was in good condition, but the ageing felt roof was beginning to break up.

If the roof had been fully stripped and re-felted, then a considerable amount of air handling equipment on the roof would have had to be removed. By choosing Kemperol, the equipment was raised to allow the waterproofing system to be installed and lowered once cured. There were also numerous skylights that were more easily incorporated into the seamless membrane with the liquid system.Paul Brown from roofing contractors Avant-Garde Roofing who laid the Kemperol pointed out that insurance was also a key issue. “It can be very difficult for some felt roofing contractors to get insurance on these types of roofs because of the fire risk associated with the torches,” he said. “Kemper System is cold applied so there is no fire risk whatsoever.”The client was also very happy with the final result. “I was expecting the project to take several weeks, but in the end it took less than a month.” King’s College head of maintenance Jason Sprague said. “Avant-Garde and Kemper did such an excellent job that we asked

them to reroof the cricket pavilion, which had started to leak.”It would have been too expensive to replace the pavilion’s asphalt balcony roof entirely. Therefore, taking into account the good work already carried out on the sixth form roof, the client chose Kemperol with rubber matting on top of that for extra protection against the cricket shoe studs. Kemperol completely saturates a non-woven reinforcement fleece and cures to form a seamless, monolithic membrane that is tough, flexible and bonds permanently to the substrate – in this case the old asphalt roof. www.kempersystem.co.uk

Striking New Single Ply School Roof Makes Its MarkOughterard National School is a new single-storey primary school situated in the Connemara district of west Ireland. The architectural vision for this new building, which boasts 16 state-of-the art classrooms, was to create a modern and aesthetically pleasing learning environment that would add real value to the local community. Another priority to the design team was using sustainable technologies and construction techniques to help reduce the building’s environmental impact.

The school building consists of eight roof areas on a variety of different pitches totalling over 3,400m2 in all. Aesthetics were important to the client as most of the roof areas are pitched at a 200 slope making them highly visible, particularly from the central courtyard area. Bauder’s Thermofol single ply membrane was specified for the new roof because it is lightweight, long lasting, and visually appealing - with welded roof profiles incorporated to give the appearance of a standing seam metal roof. The system build-up also included Bauder’s 120mm Thermotech Glass Insulation for superior thermal performance, ensuring the roof achieved the required 0.19 U-Value.

Due to the visibility of the roof, all aspects of the job were under high scrutiny. Flowcoat Chosen For South Africa’s Largest Flooring Project At IvecoFlowcrete supplied Iveco with a range of solutions as part of the company’s vast and complex flooring project at its new manufacturing facility in Pretoria. The 55,000 square metre installation was the largest flooring project in South Africa at the time and required multiple specialist and bespoke systems to be applied throughout the large manufacturing complex.

The global leader of industrial vehicles carried out an extensive specification process to ensure that the finished surface within its new facility would be able to withstand the intensive activity that would be carried out on site. Iveco recognised that the systems provided by the global resin flooring specialists Flowcrete would be the best fit for its latest development.

Flowcrete South Africa’s Managing Director Craig Blitenthall said: “When Iveco chose us they knew that they were choosing quality over costs, as there were cheaper alternatives available – however when it came down to which supplier was best placed to meet their demanding requirements it was Flowcrete that came out on top. “Working on this development meant overcoming many interesting

challenges, as not only was it the largest flooring project in the country at the time, but meeting Iveco’s specifications meant creating unique solutions and making full use of the flexibility of our systems.”

To meet Iveco’s high aesthetic requirements Flowcrete had to supply its solutions in the same colours as the client’s international standards. To do this the resin flooring specialist developed and produced floors in bespoke tones that matched Iveco’s corporate colours. Before the floor finish could be applied the concrete substrate had

to be assessed to find out what damage had been caused by a fire that had broken out during construction. To fix this floor layer the underlying concrete slabs were taken up and the area rescreeded. Support beams and sliding doors that had been fire damaged were removed and the floor cavities left behind were filled in with Conrep SF65.

The epoxy resin floor coating Flowcoat SF41 was installed across the main production areas of the facility as well as on the walkways. The hard-wearing and chemically resistant nature of this solution makes it ideal for large-scale manufacturing plants, as it will maintain a seamless, impermeable and bright surface despite the inevitable heavy work load, oil and grease spillages, hot water washes and the physical impacts of heavy equipment.

Flowcoat SF41 can optimise the working environment of industrial facilities in a number of ways. Its adjustable anti-slip profile means that the use of graded aggregates can be tailored to reduce the risk of slips and trips depending on the location. This system was also used for the demarcation lines, creating bright and clear yellow signage to aid navigation around the busy, multi-complex site. Flowcoat SF41 was utilised for this, as Iveco wanted a solution that was thicker and more durable than the standard demarcation line product.

Several areas of the facility required the floor to have specific properties. The laboratory and paint mixing rooms had the polyurethane resin system Flowfresh HF ESD installed across the floors and Flowfresh WR ESD was applied as coving around the drains. These systems not only create a seamless and easy-to-clean floor, but they also have electrostatic dissipative properties to avoid static charge build up. This was important within the laboratory as static charges in the floor can damage sensitive electrical equipment and within a paint room it can be a dangerous ignition source.

This combination of solutions meant that Iveco could rest assured that its new facility would maintain an unblemished surface that wouldn’t deteriorate when faced with the inevitable demands of manufacturing 20 tonne trucks. www.flowcrete.co.uk

Composite Marmox Soundboard Proves Ideal For Conjoined Thameside Apartments

A contractor specializing in underfloor heating systems has made extensive use of Marmox SoundBoards on a challenging project to join two Thameside apartments to create an 11-room property: overcoming significant difficulties in terms of differences in floor level, as well as providing a waterproof and acoustically attenuated subfloor. Despite having a modern, framed construction fitted out to a very high standard, there was a significant difference in height between the neighbouring flats due to the fact different types of floor tile had been selected by their respective owners. Wanting to employ as few wet trades as possible within the occupied building, Gala opted instead to utilize two different thicknesses of Marmox SoundBoard across the existing surfaces in order

to create a “level playing field” – over which the DEVI electric heating system could be laid. 54 square metres of the 8.0 mm thick SoundBoard were laid across the higher side, while a further 140 square metres of the 12.5 mm completed the exercise. With the new underfloor heating system installed across the revised room layouts and successfully commissioned, Gala completed its contract by installing a mix of ceramic tiling and high quality timber flooring. Both of these surfaces are, of course, associated with noise nuisance due to their hard nature; often magnifying the sound of footsteps. Thanks to the make-up of the Marmox SoundBoard, however, the occupants of the properties beneath or in adjoining rooms will be effectively insulated from any direct sound transmission. The UK government has raised the terrorist threat level from substantial to severe, meaning that an attack is highly likely.

This is the first time in three years that the threat level has been so high, and reflects the current unstable situation in Syria and Iraq, and the issue of returning Islamist fighters holding UK passports.

Terrorism, in its many regional and international aspects, is something that we’ve grown to accept; that the ideologies of intolerance are something that can’t be contained within the Middle East or North Africa, and that they pose problems we may have to face for decades.

The UK Terrorism Act defines terrorism as “the use or threat of action designed to influence the government or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public, or a section of the public; made for the purposes of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause…”

The United States Department of Defense defines terrorism as “the calculated use of unlawful

violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological.” It also makes the point that in 2013 terrorist attacks globally rose 43%

The Security Service (MI5) makes the point that terrorist cells are increasingly looking at less protected “soft” targets, including social and retail venues, tourist sites and transport networks. In other words, pretty much everywhere that large numbers of people congregate. Tackling terrorism is, of course, a huge and complex task, involving governments and government agencies worldwide. It’s about proactively seeking to understand, and then disrupt, terrorist activity. But it’s also about passively, through building regulations and building systems, creating built environments that are more resilient to terrorist attack.

In an attack using explosives in an urban area, between 80-85% of all secondary blast injuries are caused by flying glass.

When a bomb detonates, it produces gases at very high temperatures. This in turn leads to a rapid expansion of air and the creation of a shock wave travelling at supersonic speeds. The shock wave lasts only a few milliseconds and is then followed by an equally sudden but longer-lasting drop in pressure. It’s the enormous impact of the shock wave and the subsequent suction that shatters the glass and distorts the framing. Overall, blast injuries result in mortality ranging between 7.8% in open air to 49% in a confined space. A majority of victims (70%) will sustain soft tissue injury, and traumatic amputations will occur in approximately 11% of cases.

Most people killed or badly injured in a blast involving high-order explosives (HE) are affected by either primary or secondary blast injuries. Primary HE blast injuries are caused by high-pressure gases from the explosion rapidly expanding to produce a supersonic blast wave. This has devastating effects on human air-filled tissue, particularly the lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Primary blast injuries are generally fatal.

Secondary blast injuries caused by flying objects, for example glass fragments, are much more common than primary blast injuries and are the most usual cause of death in blast victims. The penetrating injuries occur most often in the exposed areas of the body such as the head, neck, and extremities.

The Wrightstyle system’s strength was achieved through a glazing technique that bonds the glass to its framing support, so that in an explosion the components work together to safely absorb the shock and retain the glazing elements. In many instances, untested combinations of glass and frame are specified separately - despite the fact that, in a fire or blast situation, the glass will only be as good as its framing system, and vice versa. Wrightstyle’s system, in comparison, is a compatible, complete and tested glass and steel framing system.

While other manufacturers often “test” their systems using computer modeling, we invested in “live” testing, the most significant being a charge of 500 kilos of TNT- equivalent explosive adjacent to the glazed assembly – a size of explosion associated with a lorry bomb.

Our live testing was carried out at a specialist, and highly secure, facility in the north of England. We followed the simulated lorry bomb with a simulated car bomb attack (100 kilos of TNT). The lorry bomb was detonated 75 metres from the test rig, while the car bomb was detonated at a distance of 20 metres to produce a higher pressure loading and shock on the façade – and was also successful. Importantly also, our systems are aesthetically no different from non-fire or blast systems – giving architects the ability to design buildings using glass, glass and more glass.

It’s a significant step forward because, while it’s not stopping terrorism, it’s limiting the damage that terrorism can cause – both to property and, importantly, to life – and therefore helping to thwart its very raison d’être.

Taking the lead for the move into new markets will be Alan Carse (pictured above, left), who has worked for GEZE for nine years and brings a wealth of industry and product knowledge to his new role as National Business Development Manager. High performance glazing from GLASSOLUTIONS features in London’s new £100m London Designer Outlet complex at Wembley Park which boasts the largest catchment area of any shopping centre in the UK. The demanding glazing specification delivers optimum solar control, high light transmission and thermal efficiency as well as meeting exacting performance standards for anti-vandalism, acoustic efficiency, strength and safety.

Opened in October 2103, the 350,000 sq ft London Designer Outlet features brand-leading retailers including Nike, Gap, M&S and Clarks and houses a nine-screen Cineworld alongside a strong restaurant line up. It serves a catchment of 10.4million people within a 60 minute radius of its North London location. Owned by Quintain Estates and Development Plc, the complex was designed by Leslie Jones Architects.

Using glass from GLASSOLUTIONS, Facades and shopfront specialists DML Group completed the £2.5m glazing fit out for main contractor John Sisk & Son on budget and on schedule. Single-glazed shop fronts feature 13.5mm heat-strengthened clear SGG Stadip Protect Planidur Planilux glass. Two-ply lamination provides anti-vandalism and anti-bandit performance with units withstanding loads of 1.5 tonnes to ensure public safety. The glazing cuts out 67% of the sun’s heat energy whilst allowing 60% of the sun’s light into the building.

Double glazed units comprise outer panes of 6mm SGG Securit Cool-lite SKN165ii and inner panes of 13.5mm SGG Stadip Protect Planidur Planilux with a 14mm 90% argon

Keyless Entry: How To Make Your Front Door More Like Your Car With Eneo CC

Electronic control for residential doors has been around for some time, but now the Roto Door Safe E range goes further: keyless entry is possible with the Eneo CC system. “Keyless” can mean the unlocking is done via Bluetooth, fingerprint scan or a pin code keypad. It is also possible to have a radio remote control, just like one for the remote locking system on a car.

Transformation of the school was completed after new building, extensive renovation and remodelling of the entire site took place as part of the schools improvement programme within the Borough. A Foundation Trust, Islington Arts and Media School saw the impressive scheme, designed by architects BDP, carried out in association with Balfour Beatty’s Transform Schools initiative.

A critical part of the scheme was the substantial new build delivering state-of-the-art facilities with new science laboratories, ICT suites, arts, dance, drama, media and music classrooms and practice rooms, new sports hall and a dedicated theatre. Schueco Fire-Protection Systems Benefit From Industry UpturnAccording to leading aluminium systems supplier Schueco UK Ltd., the continuing upturn in activity in the UK building industry – particularly in respect of commercial properties – has led to an increasing demand for all types of their fire-protection products.One of the few companies in the UK with a truly comprehensive range of fire-protection systems for façades, doors and windows, Schueco is constantly refining its offering to ensure that, whatever the application, it can offer a complete solution at a competitive price. A six-storey apartment development in North London is using an innovative smoke control system from SE Controls to not only provide smoke-free escape routes in the event of a fire, but also ensure that day-to-day temperatures in communal areas and corridors are kept at comfortable levels for residents.

Initially, the building was designed with a mechanical ventilation system and a separate dedicated environmental shaft to help cool the building and address the overheating effect in multi-storey buildings, caused as a by-product of routing heating distribution pipework in building voids to optimise space.

SE Controls was invited to evaluate this system by conducting a thermal modelling analysis on the building and the results showed that it provided negligible cooling benefit, reducing temperatures by just one degree Celsius on only a few days in the year. Working closely with the design team and Ardmore Construction, SE Controls engineered a combined smoke control and environmental solution, based on its SHEVTEC® system, which uses the existing smoke shafts to provide significant thermal performance improvements and enabled major cost savings to be made on the project. SE Controls incorporated additional automatic opening roof vents and lobby vents into the design,

allowing the smoke shaft is to be utilised as a fresh air natural ventilation system, which enables the lobby and corridors to be cooled and avoid overheating. This is achieved by the use of 0.5 m2 permanently open louvres at roof level and within the stairwell, while also utilising the automatic smoke dampers on each floor to vent heat into the smoke shaft. Larger automatically opening roof vents, dedicated to the smoke ventilation system, were also installed and enable the natural ventilation system to be over-ridden automatically in the event of a fire.

In normal day-to-day operation, the natural ventilation design allows air to enter through the lobby doors, which are held open by electro-magnetic devices and flow across the lobby before being exhausted through the roof vents, with the lobby temperature being controlled by a tamper proof thermostat. If a fire should occur, the lobby doors close automatically along with all the smoke dampers, except the one located on the fire floor. This allows smoke to be drawn from the corridor, through the smoke shaft and away from the stairwell to ensure a smoke free escape route is maintained.

A creative team from Amin Taha Architects were given a project to transform the ground and two upper floors of the 2,800 sq ft of commercial space at 18 Phipp Street,London, into a modern and stylish office space. After consultations with Building Control, the requirement for fire protecting the staircase, was for a clear coating to achieve Surface Spread of Flame. Thanks to their participation in an Envirograf® CPD seminar, they knew that Envirograf® would have a product that would meet their criteria.

With the help of Andy Wahts, Envirograf’s Technical Consultant in London, they chose Envirograf® product 92 QVFR clear fire retardant coating which has been specially developed for internal application. The coating is extremely hard wearing with a fast drying time and does not require a top coat. The extensive refurbishment work has been carried out by London based Ecore Construction.

During a visit at the property, a solution was found to provide 60 minutes fire protection to the exposed timber ceiling by using Envirograf® product 42 HW Intumescent Coating System. The clear coating retains the original appearance of the timber and avoids the alternative of covering the natural beauty of the wood with 2 layers of plasterboard to achieve similar fire protection results. The coating system has made the project far more cost effective and has allowed the architects to achieve a much more desirable look to the building.

Envirograf® Product 83 Intumescent Steel Coating system has also been applied, to ensure the steel structure of the building would be well supported even in the case of a fire. Previous property fires show, that it can take just a few minutes for unprotected steelwork in a building to attain temperatures of around 550 degrees centigrade in a fire. At this temperature, steelwork loses its load bearing capacity and the structure is likely to collapse, giving little time for people to evacuate and even less time for the fire service to bring the fire under control. Inbuilt fire protection has been successfully achieved on this project with the application of coating systems that are fast and easy to apply and have also enhanced the tasteful design of the building. www.envirograf.com

Advanced ‘Red Lines’ False Fire Alarms With AlarmCalmFire systems leader Advanced has stepped up the fight against unwanted false alarms with its new AlarmCalm complete false alarm management (FAM) solution. False and unwanted alarms are among the biggest issues in Fire today and, with AlarmCalm, Advanced has taken the high performance, ease-of-use approach it’s famous for to deliver a best-in-class solution.AlarmCalm comprises comprehensive configuration software for Advanced’s fire systems and new intelligent alarm acknowledgement devices called AlarmCalm Buttons. It delivers a more complete solution to FAM, that will suit almost any building or site strategy and promises to radically reduce false alarms.

AlarmCalm provides total control over alarm verification periods and investigation delays to outputs. It allows a site to be divided into false alarm management zones called Building Areas (up to 200 per panel or 40,000 per network). These are virtual areas that can be independent of fire zones and can share grouped or have individual FAM settings. There is no limit to the number of points in a Building Area and every device in the area can be configured precisely.

Alarm verification is one of the key areas of FAM and AlarmCalm facilitates this in a number of ways. Verification settings for a site can be applied incredibly quickly by assigning all common areas of a building with group settings, while allowing specific areas to have individual settings. Verification can be set to on or off, with different settings for day/night operation.

Once a signal is detected AlarmCalm starts a programmable ‘stage one’ verification time. At the end of this time if the signal is still present the system will go into full alarm. During this time the signal can be confirmed by mode or sensitivity change, for example an optical heat detector switching to heat to verify the signal, or by coincidence detection. Verification can be set quickly according to device type in each Building Area. Heat, smoke, multi-sensors and other inputs (call points or any input modules) can be used as verification inputs and set by device type or individually per point.

Verification can occur simultaneously in multiple areas and users can set the maximum number of Building Areas in verification at any one time before a full fire condition is indicated. There is growing awareness of the role that residents can play in unwanted false alarm reduction, especially in HMOs, student accommodation and apartment

buildings. Advanced’s new intelligent, loop-powered Alarm Acknowledgement device, the AlarmCalm Button can be used by residents to manually verify an alarm signal is due to an issue in their property that they believe is a false alarm, burnt toast or shower vapour are common culprits.By pressing the AlarmCalm Button, a resident initiates a ‘second stage’ verification time and (optionally), the local sounder can be silenced. If after the second stage time the signal has cleared, the system will reset to normal conditions, if the signal in the detector is still present, a full fire condition will be signalled.

During the second stage period, a fire condition is also indicated if the alarm is confirmed by another method such as sensitivity change or second detector. AlarmCalm Buttons can only extend verification time once (before a system reset). If the burnt toast becomes a real fire, a full fire condition will be signalled. Advanced believes AlarmCalm is the easiest installed and configured FAM system available. AlarmCalm Buttons are easily installed on the loop and recognised in the panel software on auto learn. They are compatible with a standard UK single-gang back box, can be flush or surface mounted and include a configurable LED, buzzer and slide in label.

Sounders, beacons and relays in each Building Area can be operated during the verification period and can be quickly set by all devices of each type or individually by point. Sounder ringing styles are also fully configurable and can utilise a different tone during verification and alarm periods. The same approach in the software is taken with Investigation Delays to Outputs, meaning a full FAM strategy can be easily set up and configured. AlarmCalm is currently available on Advanced’s EN54 2,4&13 approved MxPro 5 and Axis EN fire systems. UK’s Biggest Healthcare Project To Be Built Off Site – ‘A Fantastic Building Delivered In An Unreal Timescale’

The UK’s largest and most complex modular building project to be built in the health sector has been handed over and opened on time despite a challenging programme.

The new Women and Children’s Centre at North Middlesex University Hospital was constructed by principal contractor Kier Construction using a Yorkon off-site solution from the Portakabin Group.

The £17.9m contract, which was procured under the ProCure21+ framework, involved the off-site manufacture of the building at the Portakabin Group’s production centre in York.

The centre was built to accommodate the increase in maternity patients and around 2,000 additional births in North Middlesex. It forms part of a major reorganisation of hospital services in the boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. The architects and project managers were AHP Architects & Surveyors.

The Yorkon off-site approach radically reduced disruption to patient care and the build

programme to ensure the new facilities became operational in line with the Trust’s clinical strategy and prior to seasonal winter pressures.

Catherine Barns, Senior Project Manager at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, said, “Given the extremely challenging timescale for this project, we needed to look at more innovative methods of procurement and construction. By using an off-site approach we were able to deliver a fantastic building of this scale, on time and in an unreal timescale, which was a tremendous achievement for the Trust, Kier and Portakabin.”

Its complexities demonstrate just what is now achievable with an advanced off-site solution, in a short timescale, and on an extremely busy hospital site.”

The building accommodates a consultant-led delivery unit with additional high dependency beds, two obstetrics theatres, a neonatal unit, triage centre, women’s outpatient department, and a midwife-led birthing unit with four birthing pool rooms. A roof top plant room is located on the second floor. The external appearance of the scheme reflects the design of the adjacent facilities and features rendered façades, ribbon glazing around the perimeter of the first floor, a large atrium entrance spanning two storeys with light wells providing further natural daylight inside. There is also full height glazing to the stair towers on each of the two wings and large projecting window bays provide a visual contrast to the rendered finish across the building envelope.

The project is targeted to achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating and has a number of

sustainability features including a biodiverse green roof with a variety of meadow flowers to part of the first floor, photovoltaic panels above the plant room, and an energy-efficient combined heat and power system.

152 steel-framed Yorkon modules up to 18m long and weighing up to 18.5 tonnes were craned into position in just 28 days. A 500-tonne crane was used for this operation which took place within the hospital grounds and in close proximity to existing facilities that remained in use throughout. The units were installed partially completed with window frames, first fix electrics, HVAC ducting, plumbing, and a high performance concrete floor.

For many years 162-170 Wardour Street was the London headquarters of Paramount Studios, located at the heart of the capital’s music, film and advertising industry. However, in 2011 this seven-storey building within Soho’s Conservation Area, was acquired by award winning residential developer, Amazon Property, with the intention of converting the 21,500 sq ft mixed-use office/retail space into residential apartments, making this one of the capital’s most sought after office-to-residential conversions.

The internal reconfiguration and refurbishment has created 15 high specification apartments, including a luxury penthouse with panoramic views of the London skyline. Many of the original attractive features of this 1930’s designed building have been retained, including the metal casement frames with lead light glazing and timber sash windows. However, as with any city centre location offering a 24:7 society, noise has to be effectively contained if a peaceful environment is to be achieved.

A solution was found using Selectaglaze’s bespoke range of secondary windows. The frames have high performance seals and are tailor made to ensure the tightest fit. Independent acoustic tests demonstrate very significant levels of noise attenuation, typically 45dB, and the glazing also provides much improved thermal insulation. This, together with the removal of draughts, leads to increased comfort and reduced energy demand.

Over 200 horizontal and vertically sliding windows were produced in a matt black finish to complement the interior design and toughened safety glass was used throughout. A Stannah Maxilift 2.0 passenger lift has opened up a new outlet of Berry’s Jewellers, located in The Poultry, an historic area of Nottingham in the East Midlands.

In the heart of the city’s jewellery retail centre, the 19th-century building has undergone a complete refurbishment from mobile phone warehouse to 4 storeys of high-end jewellery, diamonds, watches and giftware by leading designers – with the hydraulic lift bringing access for all, including wheelchair users.

The 6-person, heavy-duty glass lift operates between 3 retail levels and the top floor, access to which requires a unique pass code.

Echoing the store’s stylish, spacious aesthetic, the passenger lift is wall-mounted in a scenic, part-glazed shaft that rises through the galleried floors. It operates at a speed of .630m/s over a distance of 11715mm. At ground level, the glazing features mechanical graphics, with the glazing at the upper levels offering lift-user viewability only. The purpose-built lift shaft sizes measure 1475mmW x 1650mmD, with a pit depth of 1200mm.

Maintaining the scenic theme, the 2-panel, side-opening lift doors are also fully glazed, with satin stainless steel surrounds and architraves. The 2100mm lift car is finished in glass and satin stainless steel and features a silver, full-height rear mirror, with a downlit suspended ceiling, and recessed, carpeted floor. Safety is ensured with an entrance protection barrier and an in-car autodialler.

Part of the Imperial War Museums, the historic museum has been transformed to mark the centenary of the First World War; the design– created by architects Foster + Partners - improves access, circulation, as well as creating new vistas to the park outside. Mapei’s high performance cementitious flooring system, Ultratop, was chosen to complement the

exhibits and provide a low maintenance floor coupled with resistance to heavy pedestrian traffic. All works were co-ordinated by IWM’s Construction Managers, Lend Lease, and Mapei systems were installed by Polished Concrete Designs for ITC Concepts Ltd.

The transformed IWM London includes new world-class First World War Galleries, a newly configured atrium and temporary events space over six floors displaying iconic large objects, new retail outlets and a café opening into the adjoining park. A new build project in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, spanning 8,500sq ft has gone up for sale. Completed in February 2014, this seven bedroom build has been designed to blend in with the authentic style of its surrounding area and offers all the detail of a period property with a modern twist. The house developers who undertook this impressive task specialise in building premium quality, high specification homes. The company originally started out by building small extensions, but has gradually worked up to bigger projects. In fact, the minimum project now undertaken by the developers is 4,000sq ft. This Victorian styled property conveys a wide range of architectural styles, from early classicism inherited from Regency architecture to design touches from the Queen Anne period, all injected into the new build. To the right hand side of the property is an unexpected one level modern extension, with streamlined design, incorporating bi-folding doors.This modern wing encompasses the kitchen and dining room, plus an extended seating area. These three rooms merge into one open planned space creating a contemporary living area. There is an abundance of natural light generated from two sets of bi-folds that run the length of the property, providing transition between house and garden.The construction company decided upon aluminium bi-folds after experiencing problems with PVC and wood. The doors integrated are made from high grade aluminium, in keeping with the contemporary living area.

Supplied by Origin, an award winning British manufacturer of bi-folding doors, the construction company specified a ten door set with a moving corner post plus a five door set and incorporated four roof lanterns to increase the vast amount of natural light filling the rooms.

The ten door set is a five by five corner bi-fold configuration, with the far set operating around a 90° angle clear opening. This set-up provides a completely frameless corner, with unrestricted views of the garden. Each door panel measures 793mm X 2289mm filling an aperture of 8163mm. The five door fits in an aperture of 3997mm with each door leaf measuring 765mm wide by a standard height of approximately 2289mm.

The aluminium doors are powdercoated in anthracite grey on the exterior, whilst the interior is in hipca white to maintain a modern fresh look. Due to the bespoke nature of Origin’s bi-folding doors, the interior and exterior door frames can be any combination of different colours. So whilst the outside of the doors can match the external fixtures and fittings of the house, the interior frame can be a different colour to match the room.Made from high grade aluminium, the doors provide the right combination of strength and weight, allowing for a narrow and more aesthetically pleasing frame but with easy movement through the large opening.The house has been decorated to a high specification throughout by using an interior designer to offer an opulent, luxurious feel in every room. The entirety of the project took from the end of 2012 through to February 2014, with the actual building starting to take place in March 2013.

Howe Green’s heavy-duty 7500 Series stainless steel access covers have been installed at Manchester Cathedral as part of extensive reordering works commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Manchester Cathedral. Architecturally, Manchester Cathedral is modern by Cathedral standards and was built up around the mediaeval Collegiate Church by the Victorians. In the late early and mid 19th Century, the original ledger stones were replaced with concrete and a network of copper pipe acting as an early form of in-floor heating. Heating the Cathedral from the floor was essentially the same method used over 150 years later but with only 60% of the heating pipe work working in recent years, a little intervention of the earthly kind was needed to make the facilities fit for the 21st century.

Specialist architects Lloyd Evans Prichard planned and implemented the project, overseeing a painstaking excavation process, the removal of the old antiquated heating system and subsequent installation of a new network of mechanical and electrical chambers across the entire body of the main Cathedral building, including its Nave, aisles and chapels. As a leading developer and manufacturer of floor, ceiling and wall access solutions, Howe Green’s access covers were chosen to provide reliable yet virtually invisible access to these chambers, for best aesthetics and to ensure easy maintenance going forward. Over 70 of their 7500 Series stainless steel access covers were made, each to a bespoke size and specification to fit precisely with new Burlington Stone slabs being installed. Several multipart covers were needed too, the largest at 1747 x 853mm mirroring the dimension of Victorian voids underneath the stone floor. Multiple frame and cover sections ensured the frame weights met HSE manual handling requirements. On a more unusual note, Howe Green also designed a special cover grating to allow air supply to the blower working the bellows of the Cathedral’s remarkable organ; famously damaged in a series of bombing raids during the war but repaired, maintained and used to this day. All the stainless steel access panels supplied were designed to withstand heavy foot traffic, without any detriment to strength or quality. Fitted quickly and unobtrusively into all types of hard floor finishes, the installation of the floor access panels allowed work on site to flow smoothly with the covers sitting 100% flush with the floor with no risk of slips or trips. But in such a historic and prestigious building, the decision to use Howe Green access covers was not just about practicality; it was also essential that the access panels blended in seamlessly with the floor to achieve the required aesthetic. “We were delighted to have been involved with this project,” said Richard Centa, Howe Green’s Sales and Marketing Director. “ The appearance of a completely continuous floor was achieved, despite the huge network of mechanical and electrical chambers underneath it. The award-winning York Handmade Brick Company has supplied 47,000 specially-made bricks for Dumfries House, a pioneering Scottish restoration project masterminded by the Prince of Wales.

York Handmade, based in Alne, near Easingwold, created Dumfries Blend bricks for the Walled Garden and the Belvedere Folly at Dumfries House.

The contract was worth £50,000 and the quality of the bricks themselves was praised by Prince Charles at the prestigious opening ceremony this month, which was also attended by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

David Armitage, the chairman and managing director of York Handmade, commented: “The official opening of Dumfries House was an absolutely splendid occasion. We were glowing with pride about the quality of our bricks and were delighted when Prince Charles himself mentioned them in his opening speech.“This was an extremely exciting and challenging project for us, superbly supervised by our sales manager Mark Laksevics. It involved creating bricks which fitted in perfectly with the ravaged boundary wall of the walled garden as well as unique specials for the Belvedere Folly and the Education Centre at Dumfries House,” he explained.

York Handmade was originally approached in March 2012 by Sam Templeton, the builder on the project, to supply a few dozen bricks to repair an area of brickwork on the Walled Garden wall.

Mr Armitage explained: “This did the trick. After providing a range of sample bricks for approval by the project architect Keith Ross and Prince Charles himself, we ended up with a substantial order for York Handmade bricks to replace and rebuild the dilapidated areas of the garden wall. This bespoke selection of our genuine handmade bricks became known as the Dumfries Blend.

“We were then approached by Hope Homes, a local building contractor who work in conjunction with Sam Templeton, to provide York Handmade bricks for the building of the education centre at Dumfries House.

“Then, in July last year, we were asked to provide very specific bricks for the Belvedere Folly, designed by Prince Charles himself. His decision to use a brick similar to those at Hampton Court led York Handmade producing the specific size, texture and colour bricks which would eventually be chosen and supplied.

“The Belvedere is an exquisite brick folly, full of delicate brickwork design, Arabic arches and totally bespoke handmade special shapes – a real challenge for even the most experienced brick-maker. Cantifix collaborated with Paul Archer Design to create this stunning curved glass structure - as part of the renovation and extension of a country farmhouse in Lancashire.

Constructed from sections of oversized, curved glass; the structure adds a dining area and separate living space to the property. The curved glass sections are set into a stone base which is built into the landscaping – giving the structure a floating appearance. The 360-degree glass walls provide the perfect spot for the client to bird watch – as well as to take advantage of the surrounding views. The old well shaft in the floor was also glazed to create an interesting feature.

In the dining area a glass roof draws in natural light, and its supporting angled glass beams ensure that this light is not obstructed. The glazing is fixed directly onto the stone wall of the farmhouse, which becomes an internal wall for the dining area.

The extension also features two sets of Sky-Frame doors and one set of Sky-Frame windows, which lead out from the new rooms onto a patio and seating area – creating a new ultra-modern wing for this listed building.

Dallmer has supplied its stylish CeraLine shower channels for a chain of popular private fitness clubs stretching from the capital to the Midlands: being specified for their high discharge rates and excellent installation characteristics as well as their attractive appearance: proving their all-round fitness for purpose.The easyGym operates 10 venues created by the group, which had previously spread its wings from airline flights to budget hotels. The Fulham gym, with five female and five male shower cubicles, is one of the latest venues to be refurbished. Dallmer was able to supply the CeraLine W2000 units so that they could be finished on site. This latest contract was carried out by main contractor, Lovebuild. Work was completed on schedule, in June, with the design of the rugged, stainless steel and polypropylene drainage channels helping to speed both the plumbing connections and the laying of the floor tiling.The two metre long sections of channel feature sanded flanges to ensure a secure bond with the under-tile waterproofing layer; while the height adjustable legs facilitate millimetre accurate levelling. As in this instance the CeraLine is normally aligned with the wall of the shower area to remove water effectively from the surrounding floor surface. In fact with water filling to a depth of 20 mm around the CeraLine W2000, the hydraulic design of the Dallmer channel offers a flow rate of 1.4 litres per second compared to just 0.8 for standard channels. The CeraLine W2000 can also be laid with temporary blanking plates while the waste water connection is made using a ball-jointed side outlet which is adjustable from 0-15 degrees. A spokesperson for the project team commented: “Dallmer’s CeraLine W2000 channels are ideal for locations like the easyGym changing rooms, where clients expect the facilities to look their best. The CeraLine is simple to work with when positioning and laying the tiles up to their sides, while they also remove water very effectively and are easy to keep clean.

Structural thermal break units from Schöck continue to feature strongly in many significant new build projects that involve the thermal partitioning of balconies and other cantilever connections. One of the latest completed projects being ‘ArtHouse’, part of the King’s Cross Central Regeneration project, located just north of St Pancras International and Kings Cross stations. It offers 143 high quality one, two, three and four-bed residential apartments; 29 of which are allocated for affordable housing. ArtHouse is an

intriguing design. The façade utilises part glazed terracotta tiles and there are four residential clusters with interconnecting towers finished in polished stainless steel. The combination of towers and private roof terraces form an interesting castellated roofline to the building – with a further unusual feature being the incorporation of alternating and stacked balconies.

It is here that the prevention of thermal bridging was an early design consideration. Not only to minimise any resultant heat and energy loss, but to prevent condensation and mould growth forming, which can result in potential health and respiratory problems for the occupants.

The Isokorb type K from Schöck, for concrete-to-concrete connectivity, is incorporated into the ArtHouse development. In addition to providing an efficient thermal break between the varied connection profile and the concrete structure, it also transfers bending moment, stress and shear forces. The type K provides BBA Certification and LABC Registration, as well as comfortably exceeding the requirements of BRE IP1/06 and Part L of the Building Regulations. Here the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (fRSI), must be greater than, or equal to, 0.75 for residential buildings. A stipulation comfortably exceeded by incorporating the Schöck product into the design. To guarantee the accuracy of its current performance values, Schöck recently submitted the type K for independent evaluation by the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD), at Oxford Brookes University.

Gloucester Opens Its Gateway To Mapei’s Eco Products At Britain’s Greenest ServicesA Mapei decorative floor system has been installed at Gloucester Services – a new environmentally-friendly service station on the edge of the Cotswolds. Located on the M5 Northbound, between junctions 11a and 12, ‘Britain’s greenest motorway services’ was delivered by AFL Architects. The main building is constructed from local stone and timber, and features an arched grass-covered roof set to receive BREEAM excellent rating. Three individual Mapei products were specified, alongside porcelain tiles and vinyl sheeting, throughout a 1,236m2 area. All floor works were carried out by Polished Concrete Designs for main contractor, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd.

Gloucester Services, which opened in May, is a £40-million joint project between a local charity and Westmorland Limited. The charity, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, will generate income from the service station, to support nearby target communities and charity partners in Gloucester and Stonehouse. The site includes extensive landscaping, along with electrical vehicle charging stations, a wildflower seeded roof and capacity to switch to bio-fuel pumps. A farm-shop will also feature at the site, stocked with local produce, in place of fast food outlets.

Within the main building, a screed incorporating Mapei’s fast drying hydraulic binder, Topcem was laid over insulation and underfloor heating. Mapei’s two-component, solvent-free Primer SN was applied to provide a key for Mapei Ultratop - a decorative Anthracite-toned surface that gives the appearance of a polished concrete. A refurbishment project has been completed by Hush Acoustics in apartments in Kensington, London. The client wanted to replace their existing carpet with timber flooring in the apartment but the lease dictated that a change in floor finish was not permitted due to potential sound transmission to neighbouring properties. Vicaima Make An Entrance With First European Peninsula HotelInterior door specialist, Vicaima was selected to provide joinery solutions for The Peninsula Paris Hotel, which is the first hotel of the HSH Group (Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels) in Europe. Exclusively designed for this project, the brief included doors, frames, skirting boards, panels and technical shafts, with tailor made detailing. The luxurious and historic, Palace Category, The Peninsula Paris Hotel has 200 rooms, 34 suites and was launched in August. Built close to the Arc de Triomphe, this important nineteenth century building has been given a meticulous renovation, blending old world charm with modern innovation to outstanding effect.

The Vicaima Portaro® El30 AC46dB was selected for the room entrances. This high performance solution presents the door and frame assembly in a single piece, exclusively developed and certified with constructive specifications to meet the requirements of this project. the COMBISAFE FAST FRAME System that was attached to the distinctive aluminium clad roof. A highly effective edge protection system, the system was developed by COMBISAFE in collaboration with Severfield Rowen for use on the Shard in London.“The FAST FRAME System was the perfect safety solution during the construction of this iconic building, an invaluable and cost effective system which met our fall prevention and edge protection requirements,” commented Andy Luter, Project Manager, Severfield Watson. Quick and easy to erect, the FAST FRAME System slots into pre-welded sockets on the perimeter beams to provide a triple guardrail, to which further protection in the form of a Debris Mesh Barrier can be attached. Trend Takes The Gold Medal For Energy Saving At The Emirates Arena And Sir Chris Hoy VelodromeThe Emirates Arena and adjoining Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome played pivotal roles in the success of the recent Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth Games. To fulfil its ambition to be one of the most sustainable sporting events ever, a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) from Trend Control Systems was used in both of these state-of-the-art venues.

Optimised energy management was considered vital, so when constructing the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, it was decided that a BEMS would offer the most effective method of monitoring and controlling how this resource was used. As part of a comprehensive tender process, Glasgow based Enterprise Control Engineers, a leading installer of BEMS and a Trend Partner, was invited by the main contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine, to put forward a proposal.

‘The Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome are housed in a massive building and the requirements for the BEMS were quite complex,’ explains Graham Hobbs, Enterprise Control Engineers’ operations manager. ‘Having worked with Trend for many years, we were confident that its BEMS would meet all the stated requirements, thanks to its ability to control the building’s energy consuming devices. The data the BEMS produces allows facilities managers to better analyse, understand, reconfigure and improve their site's energy usage and costs, by having them presented in an organised and informative way.’

Impressed by its approach, Sir Robert McAlpine awarded Enterprise Control Engineers the contract and work soon began on-site. To make the system as future proof as possible, Trend’s IQ®3xcite controllers were used extensively. Asked to explain their features and benefits, Patrick Quinn, Trend Control Systems’ Regional Business Development Manager, replies, ‘By communicating via Ethernet, IQ®3xcite can integrate seamlessly with a client’s IT network and the embedded web server enables access from anywhere in the world, without the need for proprietary software.’

The flexibility of the devices has proved ideal in every situation, despite the wide variety of plant they are called on to control. Enterprise Control Engineers’ Graham Hobbs, says, ‘Their versatility means that we have been able to use them for a diverse range of applications including controlling the boiler house, the air conditioning system, the underfloor heating in the changing areas, the Fan Coil Units in the offices, and the radiant heating panels in corridors. They also perform an important role in maintaining

the conditions within the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome by monitoring humidity levels, which if not kept at the correct levels could have a detrimental effect on the wooden track.’

The IQ3xcite controllers have been configured alongside a series of control panels, which are connected via an optical fibre based local area network (LAN). All data is sent to a central monitoring station located on-site, where the facilities management team can interact with the BEMS through the use of a Trend 963 Supervisor.

An advanced real-time graphical user interface, the 963 Supervisor enables designated personnel to monitor the plant and building services, and make changes to the way the building uses energy during different times of the day. An additional 963 Supervisor unit has been installed at the Glasgow Life HQ, which enables authorised users to monitor and adjust the facility remotely.

In order to provide an early warning system an alarm management system has been configured on the 963 Supervisor. Alarms indicate problem areas and events, such as water leaks or when conditions fall outside the setpoint parameters. Once again, the alarm management system has been configured to allow for remote operation if an alarm were to occur ‘out of hours’. Notification could also be sent via a SMS and email to a dedicated mobile phone. To avoid any false alarms, Enterprise Control Engineers also configured a special ‘event mode’ for the BEMS to account for spikes in energy use when the building is fully occupied.

In addition to the interface provided by the 963 Supervisor, Trend’s IQ®View8 full colour 16:9 touch screen displays were used in the boiler house panel and the main chiller panels to provide those working in the area with instant access to energy usage information. A self-configuring user interface to the BEMS, the IQ®View software presents the user with a familiar Windows operating environment, with visual access to all of the controllers and devices on-site.

Formula One Apprentices Give Rodeca Cladding A Podium FinishSome 1,800m² of Rodeca’s 40mm PC 2540-4 wall panel has been used as rainscreen and internal skin on a new apprentice training centre for young engineers at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) at The University of Sheffield.

Designed by Bond Bryan Architects to a brief that included a BREEAM “Very good” rating, the external skin is Rodeca’s Bi-Colour Opal/Kristall polycarbonate panels with a 20-year UV protection warranty used as a rainscreen system on a fully-adjustable aluminium grid.

The internal skin behind the main façade is Opalised Yellow/Kristall Bi-Colour panels as a single-skin translucent wall (with the outer chambers of the panel clear and the rear face yellow). The three elevations of lightweight Rodeca panels contrast with black saw-tooth north-lit workshops at the rear of the main building that are reminiscent of buildings from the original industrial revolution.

The luminous four-storey teaching block, affectionately known as “The iceberg”, focuses on high-level practical and academic apprentice training in sectors such as aerospace, energy and Formula One. It comprises reception, management, office and classroom space within 5,566m² on a site that was formerly an open cast mine.

Rodeca panels, which are 200 times tougher than glass, allow light transmission of up to 66% which reduces a building’s reliance on artificial light. Panels with U values as low as 0.36 W/m²K, compared to double glazing at 2.8 W/m²K and single glazing at 5.8 W/m²K, are capable of reducing energy losses by up to 80%. Bond Bryan saw Rodeca as a way to realise the brief which asked for flexible training accommodation with workshop facilities to an innovative and striking design. This was “very positively” received by local planners.

Architect Jon Rigby said they specified Rodeca for the rainscreen and “internal” windows for the aesthetic it achieved at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in

London by Herzog and De Meuron. We wanted a design which achieved a translucent layered quality to the main elevation and assumed different appearances depending on different lighting conditions. It was also important for the entire skin to be monolithic without panel modules and the 18m high Rodeca panels allowed us to achieve this in an elegant way,” he said. “In most areas the Rodeca existed as a rainscreen cladding skin beyond a white lined cavity. Elsewhere we used a secondary internal skin of Rodeca which gave a number of different layers and really helped transform the envelope at night.”

The Rodeca cladding was installed on the steel-frame building by specialist sub-contractor Cover Structure for main contractor Willmott Dixon.

Cover Structure’s commercial director Paul Cox said: “The main building has impressive Rodeca cladding to three elevations. Isolated sections of this were installed in bespoke colours to create a feature lighting effect to the façade. This was done by utilising a secondary coloured Rodeca product (yellow) in place of the insulation board and plastisol sheet which provides clear “whiteout” for the translucent cladding. The Rodeca cladding that forms the external façade to three elevations of the main building are, at 18m in length, currently the longest panels ever supplied to the UK by the manufacturer and installed in this application.

He continued: “The lightweight translucent polycarbonate interlocking panels were mounted on a bespoke engineered bracket system, this element of work being developed in conjunction with our in-house manufacturing facility together with modified tooling that enabled bespoke flashings and pressings to be produced in both aluminium and steel to complement the desired design intent. The unusual size of the Rodeca product, being 18m long and of lightweight construction, created significant installation challenges, predominately with wind, being at high altitude and in an exposed area”. www.rodeca.co.uk
