Proteak commenced its renewable teak operations in 2000, when the company began planting teak trees on reclaimed ranch lands in the state of Nayarit, roughly three hours northeast of beautiful Puerto Vallarta on Mexico’s Pacic coast. This region was chosen for itssoil and precipitation characteristics, which closely mimic teak’s best growing regions in Southeast Asia. These ideal growing conditions allow Proteak to cultivate its trees without the use of irrigation or fertilizer, thereby producing top-quality teak with minimal impact on the environment.

Upon the launch of its cutting board and butcher block lines, Proteak was greeted with enthusiastic success and feedback, with many of its products being carried by a number of the nation’s top retailers. Following the success of its kitchen lineup, Proteak has now expandedits oerings to include teak decking, countertops, rain screens and lumber.

Environmental and social sustainability have been cornerstones of Proteak’s guiding philosophy since day one. Shortly after cultivation began, Proteak was awarded a Forestry Management Certication from the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), arming Proteak’sdedication to ecologically sound forestry techniques. In addition, Proteak seeks to stimulatethe agricultural community by providing quality jobs with fair wages for workers in a traditionallylow-income area of Mexico. Proteak now holds some of the largest teak plantations in Mexico and one of the largest in the western hemisphere. With over eight thousand acres under cultivation, Proteak is positioned to be the most reliable source of sustainable plantation teak and teak wood products for years to come.

Teak

Teak is one of the most beautiful, high-quality woods used today. Teak’s uses are numerous becauseof its color, it’s resistance to rotting, and the relative ease in woodworking. Its uses and applications are endless. Many other hardwoods are often marketed as “teak substitutes,” but no other material performs to the same standards as genuine teak. Teak became a favorite of shipbuilders back in the middle ages because of its superior strengthand resistance to the elements. It can withstand rust when in contact with metal, and because of itsresistance to rot it makes it an ideal wood for the water. Its high level of resinous oil acts as a naturalinsect repellent, giving it a very high resistance to termites. You will be surprised to know that recycledteak flooring from old ships has been made into park benches in many European cities! Some of thisrecycled wood is well over a century old, a testament to its durability. In the United States, teak benches can be found in the tropical gardens of hotels in Hawaii. Tablesand chairs made of teak provide maintenance-free outdoor dining for skiers in Colorado resorts. Teak steamer chairs can be found from the coast of Maine to the Arizona desert. To say the least, teak is a versatile wood. Until recently, the problem with teak is that while it is a fantastic wood, there wasn’t enough to sustain the demand. To satisfy supply, foresters began depleting teak forests in Southeast Asia. Because of this rapid deforestation, teak became scarce, and the price of teak skyrocketed. This is where Proteak comes into play. Instead of harvesting teak from forests in Southeast Asia, we slow grow our own teak lumber on organic, sustainable, FSC certified plantations in the similar climate of Central America. At Proteak we are working to revive the use of this incredible hardwood in modern construction. Our mission is to provide quality teak lumber in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way.

As teak is a close grained hardwood, detailed cutting and carving of teak can be done with ease. Its sustainability.
