2 ◆ Update www.sohnnurse.com May 2018

Dear Colleagues,

As I sit to write this message here in Texas, spring has begun to blossom while I hear of the continued winter storms throughout the nation. We are enjoying warm weather, flowers blooming, trees and shrubs budding and gardens planted. Another item that is blooming that I would like to inform you about is the SOHN 42nd Annual Congress and Nursing Symposium “Building the Best….ORL Nursing” to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, October 5-8, 2018. The SOHN designated hotel will be the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel. What an exciting program it is turning out to be, jam packed with many excellent speakers, exhibitors and activities.

Our opening ceremony presenter is Carolyn Jones, a prominent photographer, writer, filmmaker and dynamic speaker. She has created

works on global issues in multiple media formats and is well known for “The American Nurse Project” portraying nurses throughout the nation in a variety of different settings. This

project was launched with a photo exhibit at the American Nurses Credentialing Centers National Magnet Conference in Los Angeles in 2012. There is now a book and documentary recording the interviews and photographs of this wonderful representation of nurses.

Pre-Congress will start with our popular ORL Nursing Pharmacology Day and the Comprehensive ORL and Head-Neck Nursing Course on Friday. Early Saturday morning, the First Timer’s meeting will start the day with all the committee meetings following. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend the First Timers meeting to share information and then bring a newcomer to a committee meeting to help build our committees and encourage first timer’s participation. After the opening ceremony on Saturday, the days are filled with sessions and topics to please every ORL nurse. New procedures and updates to older treatment plans will be discussed throughout the days. Two suture workshop programs will be provided with limited enrollment to allow for close supervision and instruction.

Our all-important SOHN Exhibition Hall will open on Sunday and conclude on Monday. The exhibitors provide an excellent opportunity to learn about new products for your practice and are a great addition to our Congress.

Also to help support our Foundation, our fun ENT-NF Great Raffle will continue again this year. Besides being a great avenue of raising money for our ENT-NF, it is lots of fun to see the items donated, tickets drawn and winners announced.

It is not too early to get ready for the ENT-NF “Stepping Forward for the Foundation” Sunday morning walk. Sign up for the “Stepping Forward for the Foundation” event, pick up your t-shirt and get out there and join the SOHN Walking Legends as they stride through Centennial Olympic Park.

The SOHN Business Meeting will be held on Monday morning. It is a time to announce the election winners from the electronic voting. Sharing and conducting the business of the organization, awarding of ribbons and certificates, networking with fellow colleagues and installing the new officers are just a few things that go on during this important meeting. We invite and encourage everyone to attend. Other times for networking while in attendance will include our “Meet the Poster Presenters” on Saturday evening followed by our SOHN President’s Reception.

Atlanta offers so many things to do around town. I hope everyone will find time to sightsee while attending Congress. Some highlights are World of Coca-Cola, CNN Center, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Georgia Aquarium, and the College Football Hall of Fame. Atlanta as the largest city in the state has managed to maintain its historic character. Stop by the Atlanta History Center or visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Historical Site, a tribute to an American icon. Browse through the former home of famous author Margaret Mitchell or pop into the Jimmy Carter Library. It will be difficult to choose which place to visit.

Although the program is shortened by half a day, it is filled with just as many contact hours as before. It will be your chance to participate in the 42nd Annual Congress and Nursing Symposium to learn, network, participate and meet life long colleagues and friends. Send in your registration and be ready to “Build the Best….ORL Nursing”.

See you there!

4 ◆ Update www.sohnnurse.com May 2018

Come together in Atlanta, Georgia with your nursing peers for the SOHN 42nd Annual Congress. Highlights include evidenced-based innovations and research related to ORL and Head-Neck care. Learn the latest in treatments and interventions. You’ll find content that meets your learning needs.

Atlanta isn’t just Georgia’s capital and largest city, it’s also a hub of southern entertainment and culture. It is the symbol of the “New South” wrapped up in Southern Charm. Iconic examples of postmodern architecture dot the cityscape, while vibrant arts icons like the High Museum of Art and the Atlanta Opera thrill tourists and residents alike. While Atlanta is sprawling with towering buildings

made of glass and steel, it is truly a city in the forest, dotted with expansive green spaces. This urban oasis is a multi-cultural haven for residents and visitors alike, yet exudes Southern hospitality. Individuals from all walks of life add to the city’s charm and personality.

Centennial Olympic Park is Downtown’s centerpiece and is anchored by the Fountain of Rings, an everlasting reminder of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Next door, attractions surround Pemberton Place such as Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola and Center for Civil and Human Rights. Atlanta Streetcar is the city’s modern-day trolley, carrying passengers from the convention and entertainment district to the eastside of the city.

Atlanta’s rich history comes to life in Sweet Auburn Historic District, once the wealthiest black community in America. The area is a focal point for the American civil rights movement, as the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and Ebenezer Baptist Church are located within the district.

Beyond the city’s core, Atlanta’s “in town” neighborhoods are packed with personality. Midtown mixes elegance with culture. The Westside has become a magnet for foodies, design enthusiasts and shoppers. Buckhead blends boutiques and galleries with fabulous dining, while Little Five Points keeps it funky through bohemian grunge paired with eclectic shops and music spots.

In Atlanta, chef-run restaurants dish up modern American cuisine in strikingly beautiful spaces. Among the cutting-edge eateries are cozy diners, cafés and bistros. The ethnic mom-and-pop restaurants along Buford Highway offer menus with little English and lots of flavor. Locally-owned craft breweries sprinkle the city, creating an unofficial ale trail for visitors to enjoy.

Atlanta sits at the intersection of Southern charm, creativity and sophistication. It is easy to fall in love with this beautiful city – its world-class attractions, award-winning dining and hidden wonders – and be inspired by the city’s endless possibilities.

Atlanta AirportAtlanta is home to the busiest and most efficient airport in the world, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Local TransportationMARTA, Atlanta’s public transportation system, offers easy-to-navigate rail and bus service with fares starting at $2.50. Accessible directly from the airport, MARTA provides public transportation that is convenient, safe and clean.

Taxis Atlanta has established set taxi fares between the airport and the downtown convention district and several other locations. Understanding Zone Fare vs. Metered Fare-Atlanta is unique from most cities, in that the most heavily trafficked areas are set on flat rate zone fares. This is why many times you will not see the driver start the meter. However, when traveling to a point outside of the zone, the driver will start the meter at the point of exiting the zone boundary, and the fare will be a total of the zone fare plus the additional metered distance to the destination.

Rideshare Apps The emergence of rideshare apps such as Uber and Lyft are also convenient options for getting around Atlanta. Schedule a reservation or find the airport’s designated pick-up and drop-off locations that will help to make your visit to Atlanta effortless.

Streetcar The Atlanta Streetcar is now rolling in Atlanta. Four modern vehicles will transport riders on a 2.7 mile track connecting Atlanta’s convention district at Centennial Olympic Park to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site just east of the city. The streetcar puts visitors just a short ride away from more than 300 restaurants, downtown hotels, and top venues and attractions. The low-cost fares for the Atlanta Streetcar make it a breeze to get around downtown starting at just $1.00! Atlanta Streetcar fares can be purchased with the same Breeze Card system utilized by MARTA rail and bus services.

AAO Exhibit Hall Daily Passes The AAO-HNSF Exhibit Hall will be located in Georgia World Congress Center. Daily passes are available for $125 per day through SOHN advance registration. Designate your choice of day on the registration form. (**After August 31, exhibit hall passes may be purchased from the AAO-HNSF at the Georgia World Congress Center for $150.)

Living Green! Congress 2018 will continue to be eco-friendly. Less paper, less hassle and more benefits for the attendees. Handouts will be distributed online! All registered attendees will have access to session handouts before and after the meeting. Education session handouts submitted before Congress will be placed on SOHN’s website for easy access, review and printing. Friday Evening, October 5Agatha’s ~ A Taste of Mystery…Another SOHN ThrillerLimited Availability - $73For over 30 years Agatha’s (Mystery Theater) has been entertaining Atlanta with its unique, original, and hilarious murder mysteries.  We’ve been featured on various TV shows and our actors are some of the funniest and most talented people in the Southeast.  Our special brand of comedic murder mysteries are centered on making sure that the audience is always laughing.  If you’ve been to an interactive murder mystery show before, we can honestly tell you, you haven’t experienced anything until you’ve been in to see us.  And if you’ve never been to a show with us before and you’re scared to try, we promise you one thing, you are GOING to have a great time.

Intimate VenueWe are a comedy murder mystery dinner theater with audience participation.  Now, our audience participation is a little different than other murder mysteries, but it’s also WAY more fun.  Two professional actors greet all guests at the door to explain how the evening is going to be played out.  At that time, the actors will give every audience member a part in the show.  Parts can range from playing a character in the show, complete with costuming, or a smaller part in a group.

The DinnerAgatha’s serves a five-course meal every night.  The first course to enjoy is appetizers, served buffet style.  Appetizers change throughout the orientation process before the show begins, so audience members can come back as many times as they’d like, and try some great new items.

Your second course is a cup of Agatha’s house-made soup.  All of our soups are made in-house by Agatha’s chefs from fresh, never frozen ingredients.

Your next course is a small house salad, with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and mushrooms with your choice of two dressings.  Enjoy this course with a glass of wine that is included in the price of the ticket.

The entrees at Agatha’s are something that we are extremely proud of.   Most dinner theaters give you one basic choice of chicken, beef, or fish.  Agatha’s has taken that one step further by giving you two choices of chicken and fish, a beef option, a pork option, and we haven’t forgotten about vegetarians either.  And as always, if you have a food allergy, we’ll try all we can to accommodate you.  These entrees change seasonally with each show, and are always made with the freshest ingredients.

Your final course is Agatha’s home-made dessert. Agatha’s can be a long, fun night and you are going to want to leave room for dessert.  Made from the freshest seasonal ingredients, these desserts change with each show.
