John Furlong is well known as a true champion for amateur sport and his belief in the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity. His account of leading the 2010
Games and the challenges and opportunities he faced before and since are both deeply personal and characteristically frank. Through masterful storytelling, he inspires audiences to develop a more humble, human, raw and emotional approach to leadership.
Furlong led the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games from the beginning of the bid through to the closing ceremonies. Relentless in his pursuit to deliver a Games that would touch every Canadian, he became the face and voice of the Games that would change the country forever.
He continues to draw on his business acumen and commitment to sport in Canada as the Chairman of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, volunteer Chairman of the Own the Podium Program and Chairman of Vancouver’s highly successful Rugby Sevens Tournament. He also serves on the Board of Directors for a number of other corporations and charitable organizations.
Always a passionate ambassador for Canada, Furlong has been recognized with numerous awards and honours including the Order of Canada; Order of British Columbia; Canadian of the Year, Marketer of the Year and Sport Executive of the year. He was also voted one of the top 25 most transformational Canadians alive.
BC is home to world-class research into building design and construction and experts in the emerging fields of digital design, functionalized materials and mechatronics. This session will offer a quick tour of what’s cooking in labs around the province, how these R&D activities will shape construction projects in the future and the benefits to construction companies from working closely with the R&D community.

52017 CONSTRUCTION LEADERSHIP FORUM
SESSIONS & PANEL DISCUSSIONSSESSION: FRIDAY - 10:30am
Success at work has a lot to do with communication. Our ability to be understood and to understand directly impacts performance for ourselves, our teams and our projects.
But communication can be tricky because different people have different styles. The way we effectively interact with one person will not necessarily translate to another. And yet, it’s crucial that as leaders we can adapt our style to speak with clarity, share ideas and influence a variety of different people. Some of these people report to us, but often we need to interact and influence peers, other departments, vendors, subcontractors and customers.
PANEL DISCUSSION: FRIDAY - 11:30am
SESSION: FRIDAY - 1:00pm
The expanding access to legal marijuana possession and use has raised concerns for employers who are required to ensure their employees are fit to perform their duties at work. This session will identify the
present status of the ability of employees to obtain prescriptions for marijuana, the need to ensure a safe workplace, and situations in which the employer will need to recognize and accommodate an employee’s mental or physical disability.
Panelists• Ken Boucher, Ledcor Construction Limited
• Dave Earle, Construction Leadership Relations Association of BC
• Graham Trafford, Mott Electric GP
We live in a world where virtually every skill is being commoditized – and demonetized. In short, simple terms, the market is crowded, we all look the same, and that’s bad for our bottom line.
The antidote to this situation is a strong brand – a message that sets you apart from your competitors, and makes you attractive to your buyers. A powerful brand makes you unique, special, and worth far more than any commodity.
So how do you build that brand? Award-winning brand strategist Marc Stoiber takes us through the process in a lighthearted, easy to follow presentation.
SESSION: FRIDAY - 2:00pm
Whether it’s electricians or pipefitters, carpenters or plumbers, foremen or equipment operators, cumulative fatigue and decreased alertness can result in impaired performance, increased incidents,
and reduced health and safety. This session will deliver practical strategies on the best way to optimize personal health, safety and performance while minimizing the consequences of fatigue as they relate to working in the construction industry and the exposure to physically demanding jobs, shift work, overtime and extended hours. Key topics include an introduction to sleep cycles and personal strategies to minimize fatigue and promote alertness.

6 2017 CONSTRUCTION LEADERSHIP FORUM
SESSION: SATURDAY - 9:00am
The current skilled labour shortage is forecasted to be approx. 10,000 construction jobs by 2026. The construction industry attracts only 1 in 69 high school graduates into its construction trades
programs. That number needs to be significantly more if we are to address the 2026 projected shortfall. VRCA’s High School Outreach Program engages counselors and students from high schools across the Lower Mainland and promotes construction as an attractive and viable career path. Of 1,200 students from 7 schools engaged in the Program, 34% changed their mind about a career in construction from no to yes/maybe! VRCA’s Education Committee Chair, Ronan Deane, will explain how this Program and a collective change in attitude can influence our industry’s success.
SESSION: SATURDAY - 9:30am
What is respect, and why is it so vital for a leader to instill this feeling in a team? Using the principles of Positive Psychology, which address the well-being and positive attitude of each team-member, this
session will demonstrate how any leader can create a climate of mutual respect that leads to increased performance, resilience and workplace satisfaction for everyone. Acquire tips on how to handle testing situations, and come prepared to gain revealing insights about the way you treat yourself!
