SERVICE, ADVOCACY, MEMBERSHIP and FELLOWSHIP & PROGRAM

Club President’s Report to District 4 for June-November 2014 Information provided by Committee Chairs Janet Omoro (Service), Ellen Blahitka (Advocacy), Kim Johnston (Membership) and Liz Bindon (Fellowship & Program)

BIENNIAL GOAL 1 – SERVICE 1. During the last 6 months did your club focus on any service project? If so, please

explain. Project Achieve Awards A total of 15 awards were given out. 9 awards were given out in October, and 6 in November.

Project Achieve recognizes the outstanding achievement and/or greatest improvement of a Grade 11 female student in a science subject. Our goal is to encourage young women to continue their studies in the Sciences. Letters were sent to secondary schools in Brampton and Caledon. The Science Awards Department from each school provided awardees’ name, date and time of the awards ceremony. The Awards Committee Chair prepared cheques and Club members were called upon to attend the award ceremonies to present the awards. Z Clubs and Golden Z Club

Club members acted as liaison and visited the Z Club in a number of high schools. 2. Was the focus in line with Zonta’s mission and vision?

Yes, the focus of Project Achieve Awards and Z Clubs, while geared towards Youth Development and Education, is in line with Zonta’s mission and vision.

3. Did your club cooperate with any other like- minded organization on this service

project? If so, please explain. Project Achieve Awards and Z Clubs are ongoing initiatives of the Zonta Club of Brampton-Caledon undertaken in collaboration with participating high schools in Brampton and Caledon.

BIENNIAL GOAL 2- ADVOCACY 1. As a club did you initiate advocacy actions in cooperation with like – minded

organizations during the last 6 months? If yes, please describe the action and with whom you cooperated? Participated in both of the Area 2 Zonta Says No Award presentations: Argos and Principal Mr. Timothy Powell-McBride of Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton

2. As a club did you initiate any advocacy actions during the last 6 months? If so, describe. Sent out email blasts with facts and information each day through the 16 Days of Activism. Have started plans for our IWD breakfast to be held on Friday, March 6, 2015. We are partnering with White Ribbon and our guest speaker will be a representative of White Ribbon.

BIENNIAL GOAL 3 – RESOURCES 1. Describe the level of active participation of your members in your club endeavours?

Successes Our success is being able to present interesting speakers for our business meetings. Each month our Fellowship & Program committee posts in The Zonta Tree a profile of the speaker. This is to encourage our members to invite potential new members to our meeting and invite them to stay for our dinner and interact with our members. Speakers: September - Denyse Churchill, Acting Education Coordinator, Peel Art Gallery Museum and Archives (PAMA). This was very interesting especially for our new members as Denyse pointed out our club many years ago had commissioned a sculpture titled Sisters for the gallery. She updated us on its status and also pointed out the Archives houses many of our clubs records. October - Jasmine Chong, Fundraising and Communications Coordinator, Victim Services of Peel. Jasmine talked about the South Asian Family Enrichment (SAFE) Program delivered by Victim Services. November – Zonta Birthday Month. It was fitting to have as our speaker, District 4 Governor, Joanne Raymond. She updated us on International and District news and gave

an overview of Zonta. This was fitting as we had a number of new potential members at this meeting. December - Christmas party at Clinton’s On Main. Member Chau Ghent (Flora All Occasions) provided supplies for us to create our own Christmas center piece. We also had a surprise Christmas gift exchange. It was nice to see that five of our Zonta boys attended this event. All of our members are invited to submit their ideas for speakers and our social events. Challenges

Our challenge is being able to engage interesting and relevant speakers for our business meetings.

2. Recruitment and retention are vital to Zonta and a club’s success. Please describe the above as it pertains to your club to date. Successes

Held a new member orientation session for members installed in the last year

Connected each member with a mentor, in addition to their sponsor

Revisiting the value of the Brampton Board of Trade (BBOT) Membership

A member of the committee attended a BBOT Networking workshop

President is sending out monthly calendar updates so members know what is being done each month and how they can help
