1 Bull Shots August 2020 Old Town Chapter - # 8194 Harley Owners Group Brandon, FL www.oldtownhog.com Hello Old Town Chapter Members, Hard to believe we are half way through this weird year 2020. We have been cautiously moving forward with Chapter rides, Welcome Wagon Classroom/Ride, Board, Road Captain & Chapter meetings. The Welcome Wagon Class, Board & Road Captain meetings are now back in the training room at the Brandon HD Dealership. Most have been able to attend with some unable due to a weakened immune system which can make them more susceptible to contacting Covid-19. We are working to include all by having those who cannot attend in person to sign into a Zoom virtual room. We had our first Chapter meeting at Hilton Garden Inn since March with close to 70 people attending. The chairs were spaced farther apart. The bar was open and it good to see some faces that we havent seen in a while. We also had three new members join. We awarded patches to the riders and members of the month as we again started recording the points and miles in June. Assistant Director Eddie Walker is on the fast track with the Paws 4 Patriots fundraising event(s). Eddie has come up with several great ideas on changes this year on what and how we are doing our events. Eddie will provide the details and will be asking for help with volunteers needed for the events. I know as always we will step up and do all we can to assist with these events. The 80 th Sturgis Motorcycle rally is right around the corner and we have several members heading that way. We wish them a great time and great weather. I have never been but have made it a goal to attend soon. Our next overnight ride is to Little Switzerland North Carolina from September 3 rd through September 7 th . If you are planning on going please book soon as there are deadlines for holding the rooms. Please see the flyer on our website or weekly Bullshots or contact me directly. Additionally if you have not signed up on the sign -up sheet at a Chapter meet- ing please call or email so I know you are going. This is important as I send out rides sheets, GPS routes and important information prior to the ride. The Tuesday night, Saturday & Sunday rides to restaurants have been a challenge for our Road Captains. Some restau- rants are still closed while others have changed their hours. Additionally restaurants have different mask & seating poli- cies. As a sidebar, the amount of time for receiving food at some restaurants has slowed down. Please keep this in mind, be kind and patient as they are doing their best under the strict guidelines given to them. Lastly (certainly not least) I would like to recognize a true hero to our Chapter, Ron PaladenRook (Col USMC re- tired). Ron is a Charter originalmember of our Chapter and has held many board positions. Ron is currently the Parlia- mentarian and past Director. Ron holds the distinction of being the longest continuous Road Captain in our Chapter da- ting back to the Tampa HOG Sunshine & Cigar City Chapters. Ron has decided (as we all will one day) to hang up his riding boots but continue to serve our Chapter in more ways than most people know. Ron is as modest as he is gracious & generous. Ron was recognized by the Road Captain Team and given the first time ever award of Honorary Lifetime Road Captain at the July Chapter meeting. Ron was recognized by the Ladies of Harley as an Honorary LOH Guardian at the LOH meeting in July. Two great awards for one Great Man! OTC Director Rick Vincent Ricks Reverbs

Don’t Get In A Jam…Bee Safe Aug 2020

Keep it running right..

We’ve talked about it before, but good maintenance and upkeep on your bike is important to ensuring you have a safe ride and can enjoy the beautiful rides our Ride Captains plan. So lets take a little deeper look at those key elements you should be checking. TCLOCS is the checklist flow we use to do that:

Tires and Wheels: Tread depth, tire pressure, Rim condition, spokes, breaks function, seals (any signs

of leakage from bearings), Brake pads

Controls: Handle bars tight and free, all levers secure (no cracks, not loose – includes pedals), no fray-

ing or kinks in any cables, no leaks in hoses

Lights and Electronics: Battery in good condition / charged, all lights working, turn signals working,

switches functioning properly, no loose or frayed electronic cables

Oil and other fluids: all fluids at proper levels, no signs of leaks around gaskets or seals (includes oil,

fuel, and coolant)

Chassis: check the bike frame, suspension to ensure no signs of damage or unusual wear, ensure all

fasteners are secure (no missing or loose bolts, etc), belt/chain secure.

Stands: Check your bike stand (side and/or center) to ensure it is secure and that retention spring is

working properly, check for any cracks or abnormal wear/damage Bee Safe…Ride the OTC way Safety Officer Len Goellner [email protected]

Ladies Of Harley

Dear Ladies, As many of you are aware, I have not been physically active in chapter activities over the last few

months due to family obligations and Covid-19. Communication during this time has been difficult and scheduling activities even more difficult. Due to the Covid-19 epidemic and few responses, our Bunco/pool night, which was planned for July 25th, has been postponed.

I hope that you will continue to enjoy the puzzles I design as short mental breaks. Congratulations to Christine for solving July’s cryptogram… “Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend, never owned a Harley”. If anyone has suggestions for activities that enable social distancing in August or September, please let me know.

As many of you have seen on Facebook or in person, LOH presented Col. Ron Rook with a plaque on Tuesday’s LOH dinner ride making him an Honorary LOH Guardian in recognition of all he has done for the ladies of our chapter over the years, especially the Tuesday Night LOH dinner rides. Are you aware that Col. Rook was twice voted our OTC Humanitarian of the Year? I hope that when we are once again com-fortable gathering as a large group we can schedule a special LOH dinner ride with the Col. and Mary as our very special guests.

Enjoy August’s puzzle. Be the first lady to submit (text) the answers to me at 310-809-4925 and win a prize. Good luck and stay safe,

Kathy Lawrence

10 Rides for ’20

10 Rides for ’20 is an annual challenge featuring 10 great destinations throughout the country, along with a

recommended scenic route for each. It’s a great big country we live in, with countless outstanding rides to

challenge your skills and elevate your experience. Picking just 10 of the best is a tall order, but every year

Harley-Davidson will do just that, giving you 10 great opportunities to expand your riding horizons. This year’s

10 Rides for ’20, which are featured in the 2020 HOG Membership Guide, includes historic lighthouses along

the Eastern Seaboard, a decorated battleship in the South, a “flat-out” amazing Western expanse, and lots of

surprises in between. Each year, a new 10 Rides challenge will be announced, giving you more chances for

more riding and more rewards!

In the Membership Guide you will find a QR code and URL to download the recommended scenic route which

includes the Official Checkpoint location for each destination where you will need to snap your picture.

10 Rides for ’20 destinations

• The Archway, Kearney, NE • Avery Point Lighthouse, Groton, CT • Beavertail

Lighthouse, Jamestown, RI • Black Mountain, Harlan County, KY • Bonneville Salt

Flats, UT • Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Buxton, NC • Donner Pass, CA • Portland Head

50 Rides, One Nation

50 Rides, One Nation presents 50 “rides of a lifetime,” and there’s no time limit to complete them! From

mountains to meadows, canyons to coastline, and desert to delta, there’s something for everyone. With one ride

in each state, you’ll explore some of the country’s most iconic places, with thrilling riding and great scenery

along the way. Some of the locations are well known – Tennessee’s Dragon, for example – while others may

surprise you: Alaska’s Richardson Highway may not have been on

your bucket list, but now it is! Other bucket list-worthy attractions

include Colorado’s Million Dollar Highway, the Arkansas Pig Trail,

and the Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys. Details of all 50

rides are available in this downloadable Ride Guide.

In the Ride Guide you will find a QR code and URL to download the

recommended scenic route which includes the Official Checkpoint

location for each destination where you will need to snap your

picture.

Dealership Check-In Challenge

Snap a picture of yourself holding the cover of the latest Membership Guide,

Ride Guide or HOG magazine with your bike in front of a sign displaying the

dealership's name.

Enlightment is a journey, not a destination - but where you stop along the way

can make any ride a transformational experience. With the Dealership Check-In

Challenge (formerly the Journey Challenge), you can earn points toward rewards - and

bragging rights - by visiting authorized Harley-Davidson dealerships around the world. To participate in this

challenge reference the rules for the rides.

1. Your Harley-Davidson motorcycle must be in each photo. (A Harley-Davidson motorcycle rental

through EagleRider is also acceptable.)

2. Either a current HOG Magazine, Membership Guide, or Ride Guide must be clearly identifiable in each

photo. (Go to hd.com/ride365/submit to download a printable version.)

3. Photos must clearly identify the Worldwide authorized H-D dealership. A full list of participating

dealerships can be found at h-d.com/dealers.

4. You, the entrant, must appear in at least ten (10) photos

H-D Visa

Make Ever Mile Count….Even More.

Now you can earn points just for doing the thing you love. H-D Visa

Cardmenbers who are also qualifying HOG members get 1 point for

each mile ridden on an H-D motorcycle. As if your ride wasn’t

rewarding enough. Learn more here. (h-dvisa.com)

It takes 8-12 weeks for miles to reach your H-D Visa reward account, so remember to turn them in

frequently.

So what are you waiting for? Start planning your next unforgettable experience

now.

There are many examples: Remember the one where the rider has dollar bills falling off of

him as he rides down the road. Another with a rider dressed in white clothes – pretending to be a biker, adding they are America’s #1 motorcycle insurer. A third example –people at the office near their work stations holding a note of their co-worker noting he saved so much

money on his insurance, he decided to take time off for an adventure on the open road!

Buyer Beware: There are insurance companies who want to sell you insurance; and, they brag about how much money you save by doing business with them. However, the problem is later down the road – after a motorcycle accident – you find out the at-fault driver had

little or no insurance coverage; and to add insult to injury, we find many motorcycle insurance agreements themselves to be “empty products” to the biker, not providing adequate coverage!

Accidents Happen: A local biker was travelling on U.S. 41, in Gibsonton on his way to

Tampa when a Volkswagon Jetta made a left turn in front of him, violating his right of way, causing a serious motorcycle crash, with serious injuries, requiring admission in the hospital, surgeries and he is out of work for the next six months. Investigation revealed the

at-fault driver had no insurance; and, the biker who thought he had full coverage learns he has no medical payments coverage, nor any uninsured motorist coverage. After such medical bills and lost wages, this biker is likely to file for bankruptcy!

Protect Yourself: Make sure your motorcycle insurance has uninsured motorist coverage,

the highest limits you can afford. For additional protection, revisit your automobile insurance coverage, making sure you have uninsured motorist coverage in the insurance agreement and making sure you have “stacked” coverage; as, the same may follow you if

involved in a motorcycle crash. For additional information, visit HOG-LAW.com, click on the tab for “Helpful Information” and see our “Insurance” page – highlighting the “Five Facts

Every Rider Should Know About Insurance Companies.” Call Brad: If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident, feel free to call me

directly on my cell: (813) 220-7767 anytime 24/7 for a free and immediate consultation. There are no fees or costs unless we obtain a recovery; and remember, you shouldn’t pay the
