Tradition says that St. George was born at Cappadocia and instructed in the Christian religion by his moth

He became a soldier in the Roman army and confronted Diocletian, the cruel persecutor of Christians. As a

result, George was handed over to the torturers who tried every means to put him to death. He was beaten

with clubs, tortured with red-hot irons, given poison to drink, crushed between two spiked wheels, thrown

into a cauldron of molten lead, but came through all the tortures unharmed. Then, pretending that he was

willing to oer sacrice to the idols, when all the people had assembled, George prayed, and re coming

down from heaven killed all the pagan priests and people. In the end, George was beheaded.

There is every reason to believe that St George was a martyr and it is possible that his devotion was

propagated in Europe by the crusaders who considered him their patron. He was venerated in a special wa

not only in Georgia (from whom the name of that country originated) but also in Spain, Portugal, Italy,

Lithuania andEngland. He was named patron of England in 1222 during the reign of Henry III and wasproclaimed protector of the kingdom by Pope Benedict XIV. Until1778 the feast of St George was a holy da
