(Happily) back to school

The self-made “Head Sheriff of Ritavi”, one Mr N D Kgatla, is relentless in his endeavours to steal people’s money, pretending to be a sheriff who may att ach property, collect legal fees and serve all sorts of invalid legal documents on people who are experiencing fi nancial diffi culties.

Since we exposed this swindler last week, another 29 people have communicated with us, telling us of their grief aft er having been fooled by the smooth operator’s criminal deception.

In two new cases that have been brought to our att ention the “sheriff ” sold property to a total value of more than R800 000! Like in the rest of the cases he has obviously pocketed the money.

No wonder that he could buy himself a brand new luxury LDV, to enable him to perform his duties as “sheriff ”.

Our eff orts to get comments from the SA Sheriff s Council have so far failed, but we will continue to ask them for information and comment. We have also asked the Police for their views regarding this man’s criminal deception, but at the time of going to press nothing has been heard from the SAPS either.

In the mean while there is evidence suggesting that “Sheriff ” Kgatla is on a spending spree, not hesitating to issue cheques from his illegal trust account. Needless to say, these cheques are not honoured by the bank!

• The public is warned to insist on proper identifi cation of anybody who presents him-/herself as a sheriff , and to be watchful for Mr Kgatla.

We are continuing our investigation into Ritavi’s “Head Sheriff ”.

So hoe kon hulle sulke goeie statistieke wys? Dis was glad nie akuraat.

Molebatsi Masedi The Results are a true re ection of the Grade 12 Class of 2013 — nish and klaar.Tania Vorster Sorry to burst your bubble! Its near election time.....& no one is stupid although the

ANC thinks we are!

Christine Nel Those of us with 2013 matriculants can honestly say that the exams were tough and

the marking strict but fair — no favours, no mark-ups.Bernard Nel  For the total crop of pupils

that started school 12 years ago here is a more representitive calculation of how educated they landed up being in the end. It was declared that the  2013 matric pass rate was 78%. Usually about half of all school starters drop out. thismeans that you can cut this 78% in half to 39%. Then the 30% pass mark is 40% lower than the original standard of 50%. this means you can take the remaining 39% and shave o this 40% bringing it down to 23%. And now you have this pathetic and useless subject of maths literacy, so for pupils that passed with it you can shave o another few percentage points leaving you with a pass rate of probably less than 20%.

Johan du Toit  Via AfriForum: “Werklike matriekslaagsyfer is minder as 38%”

• Do you agree with independent analysts that the matric results is sugar coated to appease us?

Hoekom, was in daardie jare vir hom duister.

lewensvloek!Dicrocoelium dendriticum

The lancet liver fl uke (Dicrocoelium dendriticum) is a parasite fl uke that tends to live in catt le or other grazing mammals.

Dicrocoelium dendriticum is part of a group of trematodes that can infect the bile ducts of humans. The symptoms can include biliary colic and general digestive disturbances, including bloating and diarrhoea. Ruminants such as cows and sheep are usually the defi nitive host, but other herbivorous mammals and humans can also serve as defi nitive hosts through ingestion of infected ants.

The main reservoirs for Dicrocoelium dendriticum are sheep, cows, land snails and ants.

The incubation period for Dicrocoelium dendriticum is currently unknown.

Dicrocoelium dendriticum spends its adult life inside the liver of its host. Aft er mating, the eggs are excreted in the faeces. The fi rst intermediate host, the terrestrial snail consumes the faeces, and becomes infected by the larval parasites. The larvae drill through the wall of the gut and sett le in its digestive tract, where they develop into a juvenile stage. The snail att empts to defend itself by walling the parasites off in cysts, which it then excretes and leaves

behind in the grass. The second intermediate

host, an ant uses the trail of snail slime as a source of moisture. The ant then swallows a cyst loaded with hundreds of juvenile lancet fl ukes. The parasites enter the

gut and then drift through its body and moves to a cluster of nerves. There, the fl uke takes control of the ant’s actions by manipulating these nerves. As evening approaches and the air cools, the infected ant is drawn away from other members of the colony and upward to the top of a blade of grass. Once there, it clamps its jaw onto the top of the blade and stays there until dawn. Aft erward, it goes back to its normal activity at the ant colony. Night aft er night, the ant goes back to the top of a blade of grass until a grazing animal comes along and eats the blade, ingesting the ant along with it, thus putt ing lancet fl ukes back inside their host. They live out their adult lives inside the animal, reproducing so that the cycle begins again.

Danielium lesegocumThe common life vloek (Danielium

lesegocum) is an opportunistic parasite vloek that tends to live amongst humans and other confused souls.

Danielium lesegocum is part of a group of apostletodes that can infect humans. The symptoms can

include, for some, general digestive disturbances, including vomiting of bile, bloating, diarrhoea and severe anal discomfort. Others experience neurological symptoms and in worst cases altered mental functioning such as delusions of grandieur. Unsuspecting humans are usually the defi nite hosts, but other hosts include the poor, the desolate, the desperate, the most impressionable, the homeless and oft en innocent off spring through listening to infected rants.

The main reservoirs for Danielium lesegocum are elders, deacons and other guilt ridden reformed sinners.

The incubation period for Danielium lesegocum is currently, unfortunately, too short.

Danielium lesegocum spends its adult life in the mind of its host. Its ridiculous ideas is excreted through its voice. The intermediate hosts, like deacons, elders and their likes, listen to this faeces and whilst infected, transmit it to other unsuspecting humans. The parasites enter its ears and then control the mind and make them do absurd things like eat grass and the like. It oft en draws them away and alienates them from other members of their communities and families.

Sad as it may be, some of these humans reproduce whilst infected with the vloek and also infect their off spring so that the cycle begins again.

Ms Martie Botha (53), CEO and Principal of Letaba Further Education and Training College (FET) in Tzaneen, will be taking up a new post in Rustenburg on 1 February. In her quiet and unassuming way she says she was headhunted and went through two interviews before being appointed principal of the Engineering and Construction Schools for the highly respected Royal Bafokeng Institute. The

international construction company WBHO is a founder partner in this project. Botha will be in charge of up to 400 learners within the construction sector.

She was with the Letaba FET for ten years. Botha matriculated at Ben Vorster High School, studied in Pretoria for her Diploma in Education and began teaching at Frans du Toit High School in Phalaborwa. She and her husband will leave soon for Rustenburg

and her three adult children will remain in Tzaneen. An acting CEO will be appointed at the Letaba FET until a suitable replacement is appointed.

She carries with her the grounded philosophy on life: “Focus on the task at hand. Do what you do to the best of your ability. Look at what you wish to achieve and then work to get there. Nothing happens by itself. Enjoy what you do. Anything that you attempt with passion is inevitably successful. Give your all, not just your best.

Do what feels right for you, not for others. Work hard and be prepared to do more than what’s expected of you. Choose your friends carefully. Surround yourself with the good. Know yourself, accept yourself and enjoy life. The will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not protect you.”

They arrested nine people for shoplift ing, assault, theft , att empted theft and theft under false pretence. Eight people were held for possession of suspected stolen property, housebreaking and theft , robbery, drinking in public and for accusing other people for being involved in witchcraft . UnlawfulnessBolobedu police have arrested 71 people for separate accounts of illegal gambling, drinking in public, assault GHB, negligent driving, violation of protection order and assault.

It’s all systems goTzaneen cluster spokesman lt col Moatshe Ngoepe promised a safer year for all residents and institutions this coming year. He in particular highlighted the safety of the farming community saying it

was one of the targeted areas last year. He said interaction among the farmers and the police will continue to strengthen to ensure the ongoing safety of the farmers. Ngoepe has assured all those who intend to partake in criminal’s activities of a stringent year ahead. “The SAPS will be exhausting all its resources in combating, investigating and

convicting criminals through courts of law,” said Ngoepe. “The SAPS recently launched its anti-rape campaign which proved to be successful in combating crime, particularly in rural areas where residents are still uninformed about the application of the law.It was only learned through campaigns and public meetings that building cordial relationships between the residents and the police must be prioritised.” Ngoepe emphasised that continuing with such campaigns is already on the SAPS list of priorities. “Educating residents about how to apply the criminal procedure act is vital, because incidents of mob justice are a result of uninformed and unruly communities who resorted to such violence as a solution. The police will apprehend the culprits, it’s their job.” The community will be informed throughout the year on being proactive in safe-guarding their property which was previously a concern in Tzaneen area. “The SAPS has its att ention focused on all areas of crime and will bring all those who contravene any of the laws to book,” said Ngoepe.

eff ektiewe dienslewering is. — Redakteur.

Help neededLucy Lubbe of Modjadjiskloof, writes per e-mail: A fi re in the village of Mukgoba, outside Modjadjiskloof, near Tzaneen, Lim-popo Province on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 resulted in 52 shacks being completely razed to the ground. Nearly all their occu-pants were Zimbabwean migrant workers. Thankfully, no one was injured. The fi re started during the day when most of the oc-cupants were at work on farm or forest plan-

tations. They were wearing their working clothes. All their good clothes were burned, and any possessions they had. Some lost Zimbabwean passports. Others lost South African asylum seeker temporary permits. Some lost cash: one man had R3000 (about $300) cash which went up in smoke. Oth-ers had smaller amounts. The major desire of these migrant workers is to earn rands to send home to their families in Zimbabwe who struggle to get food, pay school fees and hospital bills, etc. Between 150 and 200 people were aff ected by the fi re, including women and children (an average of three to four people occupied each shack). In the im-mediate aft ermath of the fi re, some young men spent nights in the open, under the trees. One small shack provided accommo-dation for fi ft een men. The people are now trying to erect structures on the ruins of the area destroyed by the fi re. Help is required - food, blankets, clothing, cash - and can be left at the Catholic Mis-sion, Modjadjiskloof (opposite Library, be-side cricket ground and doctors’ surgery)

Vrydag 17 Januarie 2014

As jy jou geloof toedruk, moet jou dade jou geloof aandui.

In ‘n jaar is daar gewoonlik 365 dae; 8 760 ure; 525 600 minute; 31 536 000 sekondes of oomblikke!

Dankbaarheid in 2014

“Kerke” verrys deesdae soos paddastoele.

We are in the rainy season and com-munities should be more aware of the diseases that are prevalent these days. Having a healthy lifestyle is key to the prevention of water and foodborne diseases. Maintaining cleanliness in the environment is also one way to ensure the safety of everyone.

Cholera is an acute illness with profuse watery diarrhoea caused by Vibrio cholerae serogroups. It is transmitt ed mainly through the faecal-oral route; that is through eating or drinking contaminated food or water. Cholera may cause severe dehydration in only a few hours. In untreated patients with severe dehydration, the case fatal-

ity rate (CFR) may exceed 50%. If pa-tients present at health facilities and correct treat-ment is received, the CFR is usually less than 1%. At least 90% of the cas-es are mild, and they remain undi-agnosed. Any person age 5 years or more can be aff ected.

The risk factors include:Eating or drinking contaminated

foods such as uncooked seafood or shellfi sh from estuarine waters

Lack of access to safe water and safe food supplies

Att ending large gatherings of people including ceremonies such

as weddings or funerals, contact with persons who died of cholera (or where there is no proper hy-giene practices and sanitation).

Many diseases and conditions can be spread through inadequate hand hygiene as a result of not washing hands. Hands should al-ways be washed:

Before, during, and aft er prepar-ing food; Before eating food; Before and aft er caring for someone who is sick; Before and aft er treating a cut or wound; Aft er using the toilet; Aft er changing diapers or cleaning

up a child who has used the toilet; Af-ter blowing

your nose, coughing, or sneezing; Aft er touching an animal or animal waste; Aft er handling pet food or pet treats; Aft er touching garbage.

Hand hygiene is critical to inter-rupt the spread of infectious dis-eases, such as the common cold and gastrointestinal illnesses. Communities are also encouraged to: Collect fresh water daily; Wash hands with soap (or ash) and safe water before you eat or prepare food; Keep all food utensils clean; Wash fruits and vegetables with

safe water before you eat them; Cook all meat, fi sh and vegetables well; Keep food covered in a clean, cool place; Store raw and cooked food separately.

If water is collected from a river, well, spring or borehole, please fol-low these steps below to clean the water before use:

Pour 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of bleach into 20-25 litres of water. Mix well and wait for at least 30 minutes (half hour), or boil the water — let the water bubble for 1 minute to make it clean and safe.

Never drink water from the river, well, dam or borehole without ster-ilizing/ doing the above.

Don’t fool with Cholera

shakerDuring the second half of 2013 Bulletin shared and celebra-ted with our readers the smartness of numerous (yet by far not all) of our area’s young entrepreneurs and achievers. Du-ring the first half of this year we will introduce some of our senior citizens who have played a particular role — as, or almost as pioneers — in the Mopani region. Sue Ettmayr kicks off our exclusive new series with an interview with

Ms Karin Iuel (81). Enjoy the read.

Karin Iuel (81), who lives at Macadamia Re-tirement Village in Tzaneen, was t h e driving force behind many of the initiatives in Haenertsburg. She grew up in Johannesburg where she went to school and then went on to complete her BA at the University of the Witwa-tersrand. She laughingly recalls being hit on the legs with a cosmos stick by Mrs Fielding at St Kather-ine’s primary school in Parktown. Her high schooling was at Roedean.

Ms Iuel’s father and the Dutch ambas-sador, Mr Lenepp, were friends and Ms Iuel was friends with his daughter Sylvia. Lenepp was subsequently transferred to Copenhagen in Denmark. When Sylvia married in Meil-gaard, Denmark, she invited Iuel to be bridesmaid. The groom’s brother Christian, who was engaged at the time, was the best man.

Iuel recalls, “I was totally bowled over by this gorgeous looking guy who was in the Danish army.” Her bridesmaid outfi t was white broderie anglaise with white shoes, a litt le white hat and a yellow pett icoat. The best man was equally smit-ten and broke off his already ailing engagement. They dated for a year in Denmark and she stayed at the Iuel family castle. Ironically Iuel’s parents, who were of Dutch origin, had married decades earlier

in Denmark while on a visit to Nina’s parents (of South African musical fame Nina and Frederick). Iuel’s father

persuaded Mr Christian Iuel to

live in South Africa as he maintained that there was no fu-ture in the

Danish army. Karin Iuel was 21 when she married

in Johannesburg.Her father was tim-

ber minded and the young cou-ple moved onto the huge family

farm outside the village of Hae-nertsburg. The then young Mr Iuel

worked at the saw mills and the young couple farmed catt le and tim-

ber just like on the grounds of the Iuel family castle in Meilgaard.

Ms Iuel recalls that the farm house had mud walls and over the years they altered everything. Glen-

shiel Hotel is on the farm that the family owned. They had thirty catt le and employed a manager called Tom who was in charge of overseeing the cream that they sold to all the local shops.

She says, “The staff gave me my nickname of Thamela meaning ‘the one who shouts’. My fam-ily still call me Thamela.” Iuel then got involved in fundraising for village projects. She started the vil-lage library in a room in the Village Hall together with Emily Zeederberg and her husband whose nickname was Sticks.

Brenda McGaffi n and several other locals helped run the library. Iuel recalls that Sticks was a very funny man and she loved doing projects with him.

Karin Iuel also started the school for black chil-dren on her farm. The school was an existing old farm house. She gathered funds from government and raised personal funds to build the junior school for 150 children. She was also heavily involved in raising funds for Thusanang.

Laughingly she says, “It was Sticks Zeederberg’s idea to form the Agricultural Society that consisted of only four members. They were Sticks, Mrs Joan Provis and us. Under the auspices of the Agricultural Society we raised money to put the ceiling in the Village Hall as well as renovate and modernise the Hall.”

Karin Iuel was also involved briefl y in politics as a member of the United Party. She maintains that that wasn’t a long lasting career. She and her husband were also involved in the yacht club at Ebenezer dam. She has two children, Mariett a and Pierre, and four grandchildren.

Nuwe Vossie-personeellede

Masana Mhinga plans to study chemical engineering at the University of Cape Town.

This eighteen-year-old former student from St George’s College said although she studied very hard, she found the matric exams challenging, especially maths. “Some of the subjects like physical science were very easy. My parents are also very proud of my achievements and we celebrated with a braai.”

She likes to write short stories and poetry and love running and reading. “I didn’t do a lot of sport last year.”

Masana said eight of the distinctions formed part of the normal school studies, while the ninth distinction was part of the advanced programme in mathematics. “I want to wish this year’s matrics good luck.”

She will be leaving for Cape Town on 2 February to start the next phase of her life.

Reaching for the stars

aangewys.

On Saturday 15 February the Rotary Club of Haenertsburg will have their inaugural Rotary ramble.

Starting and fi nishing at the Haenertsburg Village Hall, teams will drive from one “Pit Stop” to the next by following some inventive clues and gathering answers along the way. It is not important to have a 4x4 vehicle, but reasonable clearance is essential. Adventure motorcycle teams are most welcome. The fun begins when you have to either complete a task, use your phone camera (best bring a teen, they know everything…lol) or your GPS! Rotary off ers

extra points if you have a Rotarian on your team, so best pick one now, while they are fresh. Prizes for diff erent categories (i.e. Fastest, Oldest, Most Innovative etc). Join Rotary at the end of the race for a delicious Prego Roll or Chicken Burger, all included in your entry fee. The This particular project is to raise Rotary awareness in the community and funds raised will be used for club administration funds. This ensures that money raised via their other fundraisers is solely for various projects in the community.

‘Rotary ramble’ promises great fun

A dumbfounded Ms Jeanett e Nolte from Tzaneen Properties was the victim of a hoax email which is do-ing the rounds in town.

The email reads: I’m sorry for this odd request because it might get to you too urgent but it’s due to the situation of things right now. I’m stuck in Ukraine at the moment, I came down to Ukraine on an International Convention and Exhibition at world trade centre, Everything was go-ing fi ne until last night when I got robbed at GUN POINT, all cash credit cards and my cell phone were stolen away, it’s such a crazy and brutal experience, The authori-ties are not 100% supportive, the Embassy asked me to come back in three week I can’t wait till then, but the good thing is i still have my passport and return ticket saved, Right now I am fi nancially strapped and needs help fl ying back home, I’m having troubles sett ling the hotel bills and also gett ing a cab down to the airport.

Please I need you to loan me some money, I promise to refund you as soon as i’m back home, I’ll be waiting to

read back from you on how you can get the funds to me.”

Nolte said she has been inundat-ed with calls from concerned fam-ily and friends. “I want to assure everyone that I am in Tzaneen, I am fi ne and well. Please do not re-spond to the email. It’s a scam.”

The Bulletin contacted the num-bers provided in the email. The landline remains engaged and the cellphone number belongs to a Pe-ter, an operations superintendent who said he has already received

numerous calls and he doesn’t even know the person.

Nolte want to warn those who received this email not to reply or send money. “The num-bers and email address does not belong to me. I don’t know how this person managed to get hold of my contact list.”

It remains to be seen whether Black Leopards will manage to emerge victorious against all odds in their league match against African Warriors at the Puthaditshaba Stadium (Free State), Sunday afternoon. This is a must win game to remain in the league title race. They are currently lying in fourth spot with 23 points, seven points behind the pace setters, Chippa United.

Apart from the fact that Leopards desperately

need the points for the match, the two sides have un nished business. Leopards want to exact revenge for the 1-2 defeat they su ered at the hands of Warriors at the Seshego Stadium in their rst-round league match ve months ago. When asked about their state of readiness for the match, the Leopards coach, Mr Kostadin Papic, said that all his charges were razor sharp. The mood is good in the camp after beating the Democratic

Republic of Congo’s national team in a friendly match last Thursday. - LiN News/Limpopo Mirror

Hoewel ek my eie besigheid, Extreme ATV besit, is die kostes verbonde aan so ‘n wedren redelik hoog, my besigheid

Oubal moet erken, daar is konserwatiewe meriete in dié benadering.

Duminy as enigste draaier.

Shyds of Brett Schultz and Stephen Jeff eries ôl ouwer!” sê AI.

Ons wag net op bevestiging van die Protea-keurders...“Our lives are the sum total of the choices we’ve made.” - Wayne Dyer
