Cathy Harper – Editor of Election Watch from University of Melbourne School of Government

"Fake news and disinformation – the effect on elections and democracy"

Election Watch provides non-partisan, fact-based, expert analysis of key elections in Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and around the world. ElectionWatch is based at the Melbourne School of Government and is fully funded by the University of Melbourne.

We draw on the expertise of staff and senior students to provide analysis that cuts through the spin in a world grappling with fake news and asignificant drop in mainstream media coverage of policy.

Cathy is the Project Lead and Editor of Election Watch, the Melbourne School of Government’s flagship digital publication. Election Watch publishesindependent expert non-partisan analysis on election-related policy. Cathy has 15 years’ experience as a senior journalist and producer in news and current affairs at the ABCand SBS; and she was an Australian stringer for NPR News in Washington DC for seven years. She has reported from the US in the lead-up to the 2004 Presidential election,East Timor, and remote Australian Indigenous communities. She graduated from the University of Melbourne (BA Hons, LLB Hons) in 1999.

We will once again be involved in a morning of gardening in the magnificent sensory garden attached to the RoyalTalbot Acquired Brain Injury Unit.

Saturday 18th May

8.30am and concluding by 1pm.

Mid-morning refreshment and a light lunch will be provided.

We will be under the supervision of clinical nurse specialist and horticulturist Steven Wells - 2012 ABC GardeningAustralia ‘Gardener of the Year’ and in 2015 Steven was awarded a prestigious 50th Anniversary Churchill Fellowship

to research the development, use and management of therapeutic gardens in healthcare settings.

Members should wear appropriate clothing and if possible bring gardening implements including spades etc. If you don't have gardening implements, don't worry Steven has asupply.

To assist with catering please register by Tuesday 14th May on-line or contact Lynne Webber.

You may be aware that RCM has been working closely with Victoria Police Legacy to forge a closer workingrelationship. This relationship builds and strengthens current relationships with VicPol.

We have provided a number of Police Legatees with the opportunity to participate in the Rotary RYPEN program andthe club continues to support the Silk Miller Scholarship. The Police Leadership Mentoring program also continues togrow from strength to strength.

This year the Victoria Police Legacy's 2019 Charity Breakfast will be held at the MCG on Thursday 6th June 2019.Funds raised will support initiatives addressing mental health of Victoria Police employees and shared betweenVictoria Police Legacy and the Victoria Police Provident Fund's Mental Health Fund.

Victoria Policy Legacy continues to directly support families who suffer the most tragic consequences of mental health, and this breakfast is an important way to reduce the stigma of suicide and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I am looking to organize a table in support of this event. If you are interested in joining me, could you please let meknow by email by Friday 17th May 2019 so I can make the booking.

2023 RI CONVENTION THINK TANK

As part of the early planning for the Rotary International Convention in Melbourne in 2023, a Think Tank including prominent business and community leaders has beenestablished to investigate how to leverage the presence of 20,000+ visitors to advance efforts to address important issues for Melbourne.

Hugh Bucknall (RC Melbourne) reported that the Think Tank met earlier this week to explore the important issues that impact on Melbourne; a place that each of us hasgreat passion for. And magnificently, an intriguing event has been designed to complement the International Rotary Convention in 2023; an event the likes of whichMelbourne has never seen before.

The new style event will have the following features:

A theme based on “Liveable Melbourne”

Delving into 2 broad themes of Climate Change and Social Inclusivity

Undertaking a deep dive into 8-10 specific issues that include homelessness, alternative energy, population growth and so on

Issues that will appeal to a wide range of stakeholders and participants, each with their own passion and/or vested interest

A format that expressly harnesses the voice and energy of young people shaping outcomes

Techniques that are innovative, modern and engaging to extract wisdom plus solutions that work

A bias for action including investment in “the best of the best”

Continued engagement with many of the folk on this group who have expressed a keen desire to be part of something special

Chair Frank O’Brien opened the meeting with a toast to Rotary International.

President Neville Taylor welcomed guests, Tal Shmerling and Shabnam Safa (Guest Speakers) and Tagan Paul (Australian Red Cross and RCM Peace Fellow Nominee).

Neville reminded that the Social Enterprises that RCM is using has an increasing number of goods available. He encouraged members to purchase tickets for the 3 luckypeople to win prizes.

David Jones acknowledged member Birthdays and Anniversaries.

Announcements

Rob Hines advised the meeting that the Oh Kolkata! evening surpassed fundraising expectations by raising almost $5,500 toward the project partnership with VictoriaCalcutta Rotary and another in the USA focused on mentoring 500 young people in their vocational development. Rob thanked Peter and Sue Duras for hosting theevening along with a number of hard working helpers. Peter thanked those involved in attending the evening, which raised just over $1,600, an excellent result.

Frank O’Brien reminded members of the Echuca-Moama Rotary’s Steam Rally which we will be supporting over the Queen’s Birthday weekend Saturday/Sunday 8 & 9June 2019. The EM club also passed on their condolences on the passing of Kevin Walklate.

David Jones asked members to keep a lookout for raffle prizes for the club changeover.

Therese Robinson reminded members to register for the Royal Talbot Hospital Sensor Garden working bee being held this Saturday from 8.30 am.

Warwick Cavell reminded members to register for the club changeover dinner which will be held on 28 June 2019 at William Angliss Institute.

President Neville’s Announcements included

Thank you to members for their strong support in attending last week’s celebration of Kevin Walklate’s life. President Neville will arrange for Heather Walklate to attend ameeting in the near future.

The 2023 RI Convention Think Tank was attended recently by many luminaries from Melbourne.

Attending the inaugural closing function of the Ambulance Leadership Mentoring Program and thanking Alan Seale and Brett Jones for their efforts.

Reminder of a Board meeting Wednesday evening.

District Assembly on Sunday 26 May 2019 at Tabcorp Park, Melton. A very helpful forum for club leaders and new members.

Tagan Paul addressed the meeting and is RCM’s nominee for a Rotary Foundation Peace Studies Scholarship at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. Tagan is ACT-based andworks in the International Progress area for Australian Red Cross. If successful, Tagan hopes to use the studies to further develop her interest in protecting the vulnerable andthe containment of conflict. We wish Tagan a positive outcome for her upcoming interview.

Guest Speakers: Tal Shmerling – Human Rights Lawyer, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and Shabnam Safa – Project Officer YouthLeadership

Tal outlined ‘Our Stories’ – a partnership with Cool Australia, which provides free Years 8 and 9 civics citizenship lessons. The lessons draw on the experiences of refugeesbuilding a new life in Australia to deliver real-world learning and develop values of inclusivity and tolerance.

The Our Stories school educational program features stories of four refugees building a new life in Australia, each arrived in Australia at a different time and from differentethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. Our Stories explores our common humanity and highlights both the common and unique challenges faced by our newest Australians.

Tal introduced Shabnam, one of the four storytellers who then shared her story. Shabnam was born in Afghanistan and grew up as a refugee in Pakistan before she calledAustralia home at the age of 15. Since then she has persistently worked to positively shift the way our communities see and talk about a young, former refugee, woman of color.Her passion is to empower and motivate those around her to realize their potential, follow their aspirations and keep challenging traditional stereotypes and the status quoknows no bounds. Shabnam reminded us that not every refugee story is the same. There are similar challenges but the stories are different.
