MediClinic Tzaneen is about to open a fourth operating theatre. The nal in-spection of the new theatre was executed by a team of representatives of the de-partment of health last week. The fourth theatre will ensure great relieve, since the constant growth in patient numbers has caused regular bottle necks and doctors often have to execute intense patience when they need to perform procedures in a theatre. Seen during the inspection were Mr Stephen Masemola (clinical technician), RN Sunelle Bekker (Medi-Clinic theatre unit manager), Mr Zane Fanie (MediClinic hospital manager), dr Vusi Buthelezi (GM provincial o ce), dr Thabo Pinkoane (senior manager hospi-tal management support), Mr Malesela Makinta (deputy director environmental and occupational health), Ms Dusty Ra-moshaba (chief artisan provincial health) and RN Mantwa Mukhawane (deputy manager Van Velden Hospital). The chair-man of MediClinic Tzaneen’s board of directors, dr Ig Van Rensburg, this week con rmed that an ambitious project to further expand the hospital, probably in two phases, will be announced in the not

so distant future.

R33m disappears

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality failed to explain how they charge consumers for not using 10% less water. The GTM’s spokesperson, Mr Neville Ndlala, could not explain how they enforce central government’s instruction to save water, but he promised to get back to us. Ndlala has become notorious for making false promises to the me-dia and to simply ignore our enquiries.

Forgotten wreck? Bulletin asked: Do you get the impression that there is good control

over the use of Government vehicles?

Matrics say farewell in style Bulletin asked: Is too much made of matric farewells, especially regarding the cost thereof?

Put your phones down! • Do you think people really care that it’s illegal to drive while talking on a

cell phone?

maatgetalle weer sal laat toeneem. Dit is maar net enkele weke gelede dat daar so wyd berig is dat hulle getalle so kwyn. Goeie skuif!

Oulike Dreyertjie dié, klink amper of ‘n mens V.I.

Vlieg sien ‘n nuwe hemel kom‘n aarde waar almal stry.

Allan Forbes Don”t worry a new one was waiting. The state scrapyard is full, no place for this one.

The team from Mercy Air have returned safely following yet another successful outreach last week. The White River based Christian humanitarian aviation organ-ization is well known for their humanitarian work in Africa and gained international recog-nition during the great Mozambican fl oods of 2000, where their aircraft proved an invaluable part of the global eff ort to save lives.

This time round the group ventured into the rural area of Macumbeze in Western Mozam-bique. For this operation, Mercy Air partnered with Kind2Hearing and In His Name Ministries to perform hearing tests on 180 children. Hear-ing aids were taken along to be fi tt ed to those who needed them. The hearing tests were con-ducted by representatives from Kind2Hearing, Jane Maradze (an audiologist) and Chrizelle Koen (an audiometrist from Tzaneen).

“It was quite an eye opener seeing all of these children, most of whom have never had their

ears tested before. In one case we even removed a bead that was lodged inside a litt le girl’s ear for two months causing

her tremendous discomfort,” said Koen. Dur-ing their four day stay at the ASAM school, the team tested close on 200 children including some of the staff and the headmaster. A medi-cal doctor from Ohio in the USA and his wife assisted with the procedures.

Sadly the Kind2Hearing team were not able to do any of the hearing aid fi tt ings due to the type of hearing loss not allowing for what is called open fi tt ing. They took moulds of the ears and during their next visit later this month, those fi tt ings will be done.

Many of the children need hearing aids but suff er from a condition known as Otitis Media which is a middle ear infection and would need to drain completely before a fi tt ing can be done.

Wings of hope return

Mopani District Municipality has requested intervention from the de-partment of water and sanitation to assist with the emergency funding to address water shortages at the Relela Cluster in Greater Tzaneen.

The MDM requires about R70 million to address the severe water shortages in the area, where about 90 000 residents from 35 villages are faced with alarming water shortages. This is as a result of the Thapane

Dam, the main source of water in the area, having dried up.

The required amount of money is meant for amongst other things, the rehabilitation of boreholes, con-struction of additional boreholes, construction of additional storage, the construction of pipelines and general repairs of surface water in-frastructure as an intervention to the continuing problem.

Currently, the MDM is supplying

water to the area through a limit-ed number of boreholes and water tankers. “The MDM assure commu-nity members that it will continue to spare no eff ort in ensuring that they have access to water while awaiting the much needed rains in the area,” said Mr Neil Shikwambana, the MDM’s spokesperson.

He also appealed to residents to use the litt le available water sparingly, so as to avoid further challenges.

Tafels word verkoop teen R5 000/tafel of R500/persoon.

16 Oktober 2015

In Luke’s gospel we are told of the cost of being a disciple. It seems rather daunting, but true. It states clearly: “And any-one who does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be my dis-ciple”.

We all have some sort of cross to bear in life and oft en we fi nd it extremely hard to bear. Yet oft en we forget how close Christ is to us and how we can rely on fellow Christians for support.

We all need to join a small group of like-minded Chris-tians to gain this support, all it costs us is some time, time to get together and discuss things that bother us.

Some people fail to go to church because for some or oth-er reason they are not gett ing something out of it. In a small group of dedicated Christians, one can oft en fi nd answers to questions. These groups meet at regular intervals but some-times we fail to be dedicated enough, using excuses not to meet for various reasons.

With the pressure of school-ing today, we oft en fi nd we have litt le time for ourselves and therefore, we seem to feel we need also to take a break from study.

Now Jesus knows how busy

we can g e t and He k n o w s each and everyone’s need for relaxation. He does not deny us this, but what happens if we make this an excuse to take a break every time there is a school holiday. It seems to me that there can be an impression that “God can wait until we have time”.

We as faithful servants of Christ should be able to see the impor-tance of being dedicated to Him. To study His word, to question the scriptures, so as to formulate a true meaning of them.

I oft en question my dedica-tion, and worry that if I am a leader of a group I have enough information to share, but here comes the crux of the matt er, how can I know if I do not have the support of fellow Chris-tians in this group. I too can glean information from others that might give me a bett er in-sight or defi nition of my faith.

I encourage all Christians to join a small group and fi nd the necessary support from others that we so desperately need to face the challenges of today. In this sinful world we need all the support we can get.

Blessings.

Mr David Malatjie (40) from Lwandlamuni at Nwamitwa has beauti ed the Kremetart Padstal along the R71 to Phalaborwa with his works of art. He dis-plays his wooden tables and various crafted sculptures outside the Padstal which serves as a tourist attraction. He makes everything himself and enjoys the help of the Kremetart Padstal owner in allowing him to use the premises. The tables are made from Muthuma wood. Malatjie crafts sculptures for a living. He has been crafting whimsical sculptures for the past twelve years and he even crafted sculptures of people playing soccer; hoping to sell them during the 2010 soccer world cup, but the tourists didn’t really visit Tzaneen in any big numbers. He said although his business is still small, he dreams of running a big business with which he could generate enough income to enable him to create jobs for local unemployed young people.

“ A g r i - L i m -popo onderste-un aktief die Na-

Despite three operations aft er a car accident in 2007, Ms Claudia Smith (67) runs her own very successful orchid business out-side Tzaneen. Smith was born in Mashaba in Zimbabwe and came to South Africa as a child with her mother when her parents di-vorced. She went to a Musina dual medium school and then switched to an Afrikaans school in the town. She completed high school at Merensky in Tzaneen.

Smith’s fi rst job was with the law fi rm Joubert and May in Tzaneen. Later she became only one of three women to be employed as a pass-port control offi cer at the now Ol-iver Tambo airport outside Johan-nesburg. From there she moved to the typing pool at Iscor in Pretoria and on merit, moved on to the company’s chemical laboratory.

She married in 1974. Her hus-band, Herman, a past pupil at

Merensky, had never forgott en her since their days at school. He’s an avocado farm-er outside Tzaneen. They have two children. The daughter is a medi-cal doctor in Boshof in the Free State and the son, Her-man jnr, farms avo-cados in Georg-es Valley.

H e r m a n jnr initially joined the family

farm but had always been inter-ested in orchids. This resulted in the Smith family buying an entire cymbidium stock from a Witbank

widow. Her late husband had been a cymbidium expert.

The Smiths hired an inter-link truck to transport the thousands of cymbid-iums.

Herman jnr married in 2004 and Smith took over the business, now known as Smith Orchids. Ms Anne-Marie Brooke from

H a e n e r t s b u r g and a member

of the Ma-goebaskloof Spring

Fair committ ee contacted her in 2010 to display and sell her or-chids at the annu-al fair.

She took up the challenge, found a tent and had her fi rst show at the Magoebaskloof Hotel. Three months later Brooke appointed Smith for the show an-nually. This is the only show Smith does away from home, where she has her own stunning private exhi-bition centre. Smith has added oth-er orchid species to the cymbidiums and now has more than 120 species.

She experimented with orchids on mounts. Mounted orchids need

moisture and humidity to mimic the forest. As most orchids are epiphytes, they’re open rooted

and grow on trees. Orchids don’t thrive on all hard woods but have a preference for avocado wood. Smith only puts orchids in pots

to sell them as they’re prone to root rot and overwatering.

Smith is no stranger to media

exposure and was entered for a Sanlam entrepreneur competition. Although she didn’t win an award, the exposure opened doors.

Since holding orchid shows at the Spring Fair, Smith has bought two trailers to help with the trans-port and two tents at a cost of R12 000 each. She has a diff erent theme every year. This year it was logs. Last year it was all the ladders used for picking avocados. The previous year it was arches, with all the dark colours forming “The Gupta Arch.”

Together with her stalwart help-ers, the Rev Dewald Vermaak from Laeveld DR Church in Modjadjis- kloof, her husband and her son, has a successful show every year.

A staggering amount of R33 million has “vanished” from the Mopani District Mu-nicipality’s bank account. One of the DA’s councillors in the Mopani District Munici-pality, Mr Brown Mashele, fi led a motion on Tuesday that at the next sitt ing of the MDM a debate should be held to discuss R33 million unaccounted for, dragging back to 2012.

Mashele said according to the Municipal Public Accounts Committ ee’s operational report for the fi rst quarter of the 2015/2016 fi nancial year released last month, the money has vanished without any explanation.

“It is neither unauthorised expenditure, nor wasteful expenditure, nor returned to the Treasury — it is simply gone!”

The committ ee as well as the Auditor Gen-eral raised the matt er and demanded an in-vestigation but that has never materialised, said Mashele. He added that the committ ee requested the accounting offi cer on numer-ous occasions to submit documents and a re-port pertaining to the money but such report has to date never been submitt ed.

“This falls into a greater issue of Mopani simply breaking rules and the law as it sees fi t. Important Council resolutions from 2012 to date have never been implemented. Exam-ples of such resolutions include:

•The establishment of a municipal plan-ning tribunal to assist the municipality to complete all the outstanding MIG projects;

•An update on the Moshupat-sela Farm at Broederstroomdrift

outside Tzaneen, bought by the MDM for R2,9 million from the Land Bank in 2007, to empow-er young people’s agricultural cooperatives. The farm has been abandoned and is produc-ing only weeds;

•The recruitment of MPAC support staff to probe fi nancial irregularities.”

Mashele also said “failure to implement council resolutions is a clear indication that the political leadership is neglecting the residents of Mopani and is only focused on self-enriching”.

He concluded by saying that heads must roll, since R33million is an extraordinary amount to just disappear.

R33m missing from MDM A much respected and loved member of the Haenertsburg Police, Sgt Modiba Klaas Ramokgopa (46) was killed in a car accident on Saturday. He was due to be promoted to warrant offi cer soon. The late Ramokgopa was on his way from Polokwane on the Lebowakgomo road when an interlink, in front of him, turned. He drove straight into the truck and was killed instantly. He leaves a wife and three young children. A memorial service was held at his home at Mank-weng Unit C on Tursday and the funeral will be held at the same address tomor-row at 18:00.

Dear Protectors of our community

The owner of a swimming pool renovations company was ar-rested in Tzaneen this past week aft er he allegedly defrauded many locals of money paid for his services.

The man, Robert O’ Neil, is the owner of Pool Coatings and Renovations and is for-merly from Gauteng. He was taken into custody aft er one couple he tried to con, report-ed the matt er to the police.

Mr Gerhard “Smirre” Smit and his partner, Sanet Op-perman, had employed O’ Neil to give their swimming pool a revamp. They were

quoted R2 500 for the job and requested to transfer R2 000 up-front so that he could buy the required materials for the pro-ject. He would buy the materials in Gauteng. “While he was in Johannesburg he gave us a call and said he had found a good price on a chlorinator and requested a payment of R850 to pur-chase it. We made the payment and two days later he phoned to say that the seller of the chlorinator was no longer interested in selling,” explained Opperman. “When he came to start the job on a Friday aft ernoon, he only installed a new swimming pool light and said he was quickly going off site to fetch the rest of the material we paid him for such as sealant and the chlorinator. He never returned.”

Smit and Opperman tried in vain to contact O’Neil in the days that followed but were met with unanswered phone calls and no replies to messages. They then contacted his wife who works

as a clerk at the SAPS. “We gave him the ultimatum to return the money or we will report him to the po-lice and lay a charge against him,” Opper-man said. “When he still didn’t reply, we took the matt er further which subsequently led to his arrest.”

hom twee jaar gelede

The newly elected prefects of Mer-ensky High School’s hostels were in high spirits when they started off with a team building exercise. An “Amazing Race” took them across the

school grounds, urging teams to work together to complete various fun challenges. Then followed a formal training session lead by hostel staff , to dis-cuss expectations and plans for their term of of-

fi ce. A braai at the dam ended the day.The following morning a motiva-

tional session set the tone for the rest of the days’ activities. Parents of the members arrived to share in the in-

auguration ceremony and enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast in the hos-tel dining hall. Jason Rodrigues and Joane Fernandes (the head prefects for 2014/15) handed the reigns over to newly elected head prefects, Jo-seph Raspel and Altacia Gubitz.

In the past, a combined inaugu-ration function was held for both school and hostel leaders but, as the Merensky Hostel has its own unique traditions, a new tradition was start-ed with separate functions. As part of the ceremony, the new group of hostel prefects pledged their support and loyalty to the staff , pupils and fel-low inmates of the Merensky Hostels.

“It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to, cry if I want to...” — Lesley Gore
