17 AUGUST 2014 20TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME
To be a Christ-centred family that loves and
serves one another with joy and humility
THE MOST PERSUASIVE THING OF ALL
St Gregory of Nazianzus, a Father of the Church, prefers persuasion rather than coercion. Because
persuasion carries more weight. St Gregory says that what is willingly done has the foundation of
steadfastness and "it is made fast by the unbreakable bonds of love." On the other hand whatever is
carried out against one's will, under a threat " is like an arrow artificially tied back, or a river damned in
on every side of its channel. Given the opportunity it rejects the restraining force."
How then can we acquire the skills of persuasion? For St Gregory, the most persuasive thing of all is a
man's character. A mild man is transformed into a warrior should the occasion arise. Because "when
your puny human efforts, weighted by the burden of a guilty conscience, meet with rejection," the
warrior with "his blameless life wins him ready acceptance, you will understand the distinction between
a monkey's scream and a lion's roar. A man's character is the most persuasive thing of all."

The Joy of the Gospel
- Pope Francis -
#36All revealed truths derive from the same divine source and are to be believed with the same faith, yet some of them are more important for giving direct expression to the heart of the Gospel. In this basic core, what shines forth is the beauty of the saving love of God made manifest in Jesus Christ who died and rose from the dead.
NCC REFLECTION
The Church is the image of the triune God, and, as such, is to be characterized in terms of its relationships:
relationships so constructed that each individual is focussed towards the others. Only in this relatedness do
individuals become who they are, and acquire their own identity. Relatedness and dialogue are thus fundamental
to the nature of the Church. What constitutes the Church is that each member is conscious of being in
relationship with the others, living through them and for them. No one is there just as themselves; no one
believes just as themselves. Faith is only possible within the Church's reciprocity. One cannot be a Christian on
one's own.
