Opening ceremony Opening ceremony took place,

Friday, 5 Juli 2013 on the market

square in Ostrow Wielkopolski, at

18:00. It has begun with ceremonial

march of competitors from all

countries run by Ostrowska

Concert Orchestra. After that the

competitors were greeted by the

President of Ostrow Wielkopolski,

Jaroslaw Urbaniak, and

Championships was opened by the President of the Polish Aeroclub, Włodzimierz Skalik. Then, the

competitors took a vow of fair play, after which the performance of Folk Dance Ensemble "Swojacy"

and Ostrowska Concert Orchestra were given.

The text of the oath

We solemnly pledge our talents, skills, strength and quest for adventure to a contest which we will

make fair and exemplary.

We pledge chivalry in the contest, hoping that a true friendship oft comes out of true rivalry.

We vow respect to the judges who guard that this contest be fair and true.

We go to contest to find true measure of ourselves, for joy, for glory.

We know the line between boldness and recklessness, and know that the glory gained, for itself, at a

hazard to life own or others is a vain glory.

We pledge to carry our common ancestors chivalry ideals to where they could only tread in their

dreams, and not to shame their memory. Let it be so!

Security and emergencies They are no critical security dangers, a general caution is advised like in many western cities.

Emergency phone is 112, both from mobile phones and landlines. Law enforcement is performed by

Police ("Policja") and in the bigger cities additionally by Municipal Guard ("Straż miejska"). Medical

rescue service is called "Pogotowie ratunkowe". Fire-fighters are called "Straż pożarna". They also deal

with non-fire technical emergencies.

Polish language basics Of course we would love if you learn Polish language! If you decide not to, you can still try to speak

other languages. At least basic level of English can be expected with younger people. Some people

speak German, especially in near-border regions. Other languages like French, Italian, Spanish are of

secondary popularity. Russian was a mandatory foreign language in schools for a long time, so many

older people are still able to speak it.

In order to ease the communication (at least on the airport) between these that do not speak the

common language (except hands and other non-verbal types of passing the information) we have

created this chart with names of the basic parts of the glider:

We love the smell of AVGAS in the morning!

[The story about volunteers written by volunteers]

For over a week now Ostrów is hosting 17th FAI European Gliding Championships. If you would try to

bring the secrets of the organization of the event, no doubt it would take a good couple of pages.

Using poor weather conditions and spare time, I came across an article made by Tomasz Kawa about

pilots' pre and after flight activities during the competition. This inspired me to brief a statement of our

airport's thick and thin through the eyes of volunteers here at Ostrów airfiled. Our work might not be

very visible, but I'll try to bring it out from the abyss of oblivion :)

Six o'clock on the alarm clock. A quick wipe of the eyes and a quick run to the shower. Having still wet

hair we're finishing breakfast and at seven o'clock and we're in Robur (high-class sports car, designed

for off-road in all weather conditions, in a word – a real tank among pick-ups of DDR's production).

The transporter gets all the necessary things you need to prepare the grid, namely: scales, ropes,

hooks, cones, flags, vests, fire extinguishers, gallons of water needed to survive at thirty degree heat,

and us – the volunteers... It is worth noticing that our car is like headquarters for us.

Page 17: Bulletin 2 - 17th FAI European Gliding Championshipsegc2013.eu/media/download/biuletyn_2_2013_v2_s_1.pdf · 2013-07-22 · - The tightly arranged "curriculum vitae" in gliding: more

Bulletin 2, 19 July 2013 http:// egc2013.eu

Okay, scales are in place, cones are marking the grid rows, now all you need is just a team, which will

ensure that all ninety two gliders are perfectly positioned to take off. After the briefing we can see the

convoys of cars towing gliders approaching. It's a great opportunity to look at the sailplanes in their

full glory, and wish all the players good luck in today's task. Now the important thing is the grid order

that determines the set of gliders in the right order: club class, standard class and multi-seat class. That

is a job for people assigned especially for that. In the meantime running nimbly between lying wings

there are our volunteers handing out some trackers to observe their flights during the competition.

When everything is ready, the pilots are getting slowly into their machines, and from the hangar zone

starting engines can be heard. At its disposal the Aeroclub of Ostrów has a Piper, Brygadyr and Zlins

from Chech Republic and French Moranes having "Polish plates". Using flags, helpers indicate to which

glider plane has to taxi to. When this happens, the closest person runs for the towing rope and throws

under the fuselage, strapping it to the hook. Now, it's the release of a glider which is usually performed

by pilot's own helper. After the first wave, that is at a time when all the teams (airplane + glider) rise

into the air, we go back for another line, and so the sequence is repeated. The release of all the players

takes just over an hour, and now all that remains is to wait for the return of the pilots at the end of the

task.

Page 18: Bulletin 2 - 17th FAI European Gliding Championshipsegc2013.eu/media/download/biuletyn_2_2013_v2_s_1.pdf · 2013-07-22 · - The tightly arranged "curriculum vitae" in gliding: more

Bulletin 2, 19 July 2013 http:// egc2013.eu

A moment of rest and you can go for

dinner. Great, because meals are

provided by the organizer. Taking this

opportunity, that at this time the

restaurant is almost empty, we can sit

anywhere we want. Peeking into the

eyes of his companions each one is

trying to hide the signs of fatigue and

after the dinner everyone is getting

back to their assigned duties. Maybe

it's not all working like the watches of our colleagues from Switzerland but everyone is trying to

scrupulously fulfill hers or his tasks. Although it could use more ICOMs we have a permanent contact

with our commander – Maciej Całka [on the photo] so in the event of any change in plans, as soon as

we get new instructions we do enforce them.

From the tower, messages about the first arrivals can be heard, so assigned volunteers are using

binoculars or their falcon eyes to write down the competition markings appearing on the gliders' fins

and note the time of landing. Spectacular approach of eight gliders at a time connected with

discharging water brings a smile to the face and at the same time induces a slight jealousy - after all,

who among us would not want to be in the pilot's seat now?! Competitors after landing cope

practically alone albeit we're hanging around the place where the gliders spend the night to listen to

some stories from the flight.

Evening is coming pretty fast, so depending on the willingness each one is devoted to something else.

Some disappear with their noses in the books, some are voracious after observation of the flights sit

for simulators and some go to the closest shop to buy some things for dinner. Most, however, are

ripping pictures from cameras to post a photo story on the Championship's web page and trackers or

radio transciever are being charged. In one word, we're doing stuff for which tomorrow won't be

enough time – we'll be busy all the way. Now anyone with a clear conscience, as long as the

mosquitoes won't bite him to death during the way, can go the place where he sleeps. From the

campsite can be heard the sound of sliding inputs and snoring of neighboring competitors.

The only easy day was yesterday, that's what.

DuoDiscus XLT with controls for the handicapped is ready!

Several months ago at our website we wrote about the "Flying With No Limits - The Handicapped Soar

Into The Air" initiative, supported by Avalon Foundation.

One of our beneficiaries, Adam Czeladzki, at the moment the only handicapped pilot competing in

Poland, committed himself to starting and giving momentum to flight training of the handicapped.

What had been already accomplished then was the establishment of the adapted, staffed training

center in Leszno (SW Poland), the only missing piece was the adapted glider. This last barrier came

down this year. The dual-seat Duo Discuss XLT glider with hands controls is now ready!
