Bulletin 21st June 2019
Dear Parents/Carers
SUMMER FUN NIGHT
Although it has been unseasonably wet, our annual Summer Fun Night will soon be upon us – and the weather
looks like it is improving towards the end of next week! The event starts at 6pm to 8.30pm on Friday 28th June
with lots of fun activities, face painting and bouncy castle.
The PTA cannot run an event of this size without a lot of volunteers. We need a lot of help all day from
school drop off but especially from 2.30pm onwards and any help you can offer is really appreciated. A rota
will be available in the playground from Monday and details will also be put on our Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/PotleyHillPTA.
Friday 28th will also be a MUFTI day for children in exchange for bringing a bottle for the tombola stall.
SPORTS MORNING
Thank you for your patience and understanding with the weather issues which have
caused our sports afternoon to be cancelled – TWICE! The rain has been
unprecedented for June! Congratulations to Green Team for their narrow win by a
mere one point! It was extremely close all the way through the events this year with
only a few points difference between first and third places. A big thank you goes to
Miss Bucknell who organised this year’s event and prepared the resources three
times! We were really pleased to see everyone having such a good time.
MISS BOXALL’S VOLUNTEER WORK IN UGANDA
Miss Boxall sends you all her thanks and gratitude, last Friday’s non uniform day
raised £236.10 towards her target, she is extremely grateful. Don’t forget the Uganda be in it to win it Quiz
on Thursday 27th June in the school hall.
Uganda Be In It To Win It! QUIZ NIGHT RETURNS! And this time we are raising funds to support Miss Boxall (Hummingbird Class)
who has been accepted into the LRTT (Limited Resource Teacher Training) programme and will be spending
four weeks of the summer holidays in Uganda helping to up skill and energise teaching communities, providing
sustainable support and training to local teachers who will go on to deliver a better education to their
students.
So whether you are taking part in order to help raise vital funds for a worthy cause, fighting to earn school
playground/staff room bragging rights or just fancy coming along to see your Quiz Mistress give her farewell
performance then book your tickets and join us for a rip-roaring child-free night.
When? Thursday 27th June, 7pm for a 7.30pm start
Where? The School Hall
How? Fill in the entry form at the end of the bulletin and return to Mrs Rose/Hummingbird Class along with
your fee - £4 per person, maximum of 6 per team.
Bring your own booze and food (local takeaways are welcome!) Prizes for the winning team, Wooden Spoon
and Best Grub.
See you there! And your teaser question is…. Which sub-Saharan African country is home to King T’Challa,
came under attack by “Killmonger” and is a rich source of vibranium? Oh, wait… that’s fictional and called
Wakanda. I promise they will get better…

TIMID TO TIGER TRAINING
I have included a few key slides from week 3 of our ‘Timid to Tiger’ Course which is taking place on
Wednesday afternoons in the school. This session focused on anxiety.
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a natural, normal feeling we all experience from time to time. It is our body’s way of preparing us
for a challenge when faced with stress, by releasing a hormone called adrenaline. This causes a ‘fight or flight’
response so that we are alert and ready to react to the challenge. So anxiety can be useful and helpful when
we face new or stressful situations. When we are anxious about something, we can get all sorts of funny
feelings in our bodies – shaking, feeling sick, wobbly legs, blurred vision, feeling like we can’t breathe, can’t
swallow, feeling dizzy, tight chest, looking pale and many more.
These feelings feel horrible but are completely normal and harmless. These feelings are just to help our bodies
to prepare to escape from something that we are scared of. If you child gets these feelings, be very calm and
confident, and tell them it’s going to be OK. Even if you are really alarmed by the feelings that your child is
having in their body, don’t let on! If you look upset, you child will think there really is something to worry
about!
The role of Avoidance in Anxiety
If children learn to avoid things that they are scared of, they never get used to them and never learn that they
can cope with them. Remember if we avoid things, the issue just gets bigger! Avoiding things we are scared of
then becomes a very ingrained behaviour, and one that is difficult to break. This is because when we escape
from our fear, we experience a powerful feeling of relief. This then rewards our avoidance behaviours and
increases the odds we will avoid the next time we encounter this fear and reinforces the cycle.
The Avoidance Cycle
Compensating
When you have a marked fear of something “compensate” by making sure your children have lots of extra
opportunities to have a positive experience with that stimulus. For example, if you are scared of spiders, find
someone who is happy around spiders to model how to remove them from your house.
The person needs to be able to:
Be confident with the stimulus
Have a good relationship with the child
CLASS LISTS & MOVE UP DAYS
We will be sending you details of your child’s new class on Monday 1st July in advance of their first move up
morning on Thursday 4th July. A second move up afternoon will take place on Wednesday 17th July. Children in
Y6 moving up to secondary school in September spend the entire day at their new school on Thursday 4th.
SPORTS
On Friday 14th June Annabel R, Amelia H, Lily W, Lois C,
Matthew N, Megan H and Mia S, played their final league game
against Heatherside Junior School, to qualify for a place at the
Hampshire Games. We won 6-3.
On Thursday 20th June, at the Games, we represented North-
East Hampshire and played 6 teams from across the county.
Hattie B and Liam B joined the squad. The overall winner was
Abbotswood, from the New Forest, and in our game against
them they won 6-3, which gives an indication of the standard of
this year’s team. Congratulations and well done to all the squad!
Thank you to all our parents for their support and help transporting the team to fixtures during the season.
Well done to Annabel R and Lily W who are both competing in a basketball tournament on Sunday 23rd June in Sheffield, representing the South of England Under 11s category. What a fantastic achievement, girls!
Y5 ACTIVITY DAY AT YATELEY SECONDARY
On Wednesday 26th June, our Y5s are due to spend a day at Yateley Secondary. These days always prove to
be invaluable in helping with children’s transition to secondary school – even if they do not intend to ultimately
move on to this particular school. Parents of children in Y5 will have received a booking form a few weeks ago
with all of the instructions for dropping off and picking up. Children will be recorded as being on a ‘visit’ in the
register and this is not counted as an absence from school. Just as a reminder, children are being taken
DIRECTLY to Yateley in the morning and being picked up from there (or walking home!).
HART SPORTING EVENT KS1
Primary schools in the Hart District are very excited to have organised their first joint sporting event on
Tuesday 2nd July at the Aldershot Garrison Centre. Unfortunately, the date for this was only confirmed
recently and does clash with our KS2 Production. However, we are pleased to be able to take some of our
KS1 pupils to this athletic event. If your child has been chosen to represent the school, they should be
receiving an invitation shortly. Parents/carers are also welcome to attend if their child is taking part.
PGL INFORMATION EVENING FOR CURRENT Y5
We are due to hold an information evening for parents/carers of our current Y5 children in preparation for
our residential trip in September!! This is at 6pm in the school hall on Tuesday 2nd July. Slides from the
presentation will also be available afterwards on our password protected website – details of this will be
shared shortly.
Y5/6 PRODUCTION After many weeks of practising their lines, getting their costumes ready
and ramping up the humour, our Y5/6 pupils will be presenting “Rock
Bottom” (expect lots of rude jokes!). Performances are on the
afternoon of Monday 1st July to the rest of the school, 1.45pm on
Tuesday 2nd July and 6pm on Wednesday 3rd July. Tickets will be
allocated by the end of next week. Requests must be in by the end of
Tuesday.
Y1/2 SEASIDE DAY
Our Y1/2 team are planning an exciting History day for the children in
school with a visiting Museum workshop to give them a flavour of
seaside days of the past – including a Punch and Judy show and dressing
up. Please remember to send your voluntary contributions of £2.40 into school (payments can also be made
on ParentMail).
