2014 NORCECA World Championship QualificationPRELIMS

St Lucia Sweeps Antigua & Barbuda to Stay Alive for Finals

Spot

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: Indira Laurencin had a team-high 17 points

as Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) champions St

Lucia registered a much needed three sets win over regional rivals

Antigua & Barbuda in their final round-robin match of the 2014

FIVB Women’s World Championship NORCECA second round

Group J qualifiers on Sunday morning.

With the win at the International School of Curacao Auditorium,

Willemstad, St Lucia ended with a 2-1 record in pool play and nine

points, one behind host Curacao which came up against Belize

(five), the only other team in contention to reach the gold medal

match, in their final round-robin encounter in the second match on Sunday morning.

At the bottom of the four-team without a win from its three matches, but with one point was Antigua &

Barbuda.

Laurencin’s tally included 12 kills and four blocks for the St Lucians who entered the match needing a

win to keep its hopes of reaching the championship decider alive while Captain Natalie Edward added

11, inclusive of eight kills.

Dania Hamilton also got eight points, Tyna Williams six, and Latoya Edward, five for the winners’, who

proved too much for their rivals, winning on spikes, 36-16, 6-4 on blocks and 10-4 on service aces.

Naheemah Wilson with seven and the pair of Natasha Best and Reika Michael with four points each

were the main contributors for the losers

.Giselle Azar, captain of Antigua & Barbuda first congratulated St Lucia on its win, but at the same time

expressed disappointment on her team’s display.

“Our intentions was to come out and get a straight sets win, but we were too complacent from the get

go and did not play as aggressive as we needed to.

Azar while admitting that she along with the other senior players in the team fell short in the goals they

set for themselves as part of the team, was full of praise for the younger members of the team who

played to their best ability.

Natalie Edward, St Lucia’s captain was very happy with the win which kept her team in with a chance of

reaching the final.

“The win provided us with a great chance to qualify for the final and also to move into the third round,

but I don’t think we have really played our best match as yet. We lacked the aggression and

concentration that we normally play well and for our next match, which will hopefully be the final we

need to be more relaxed and enjoy the match,” ended Edward.

Esron Gittens, Antigua & Barbuda coach first paid tribute to his opponents, St Lucia, who he described as

formidable rivals.

However, despite the absence of some key players due to injury and work commitments, Gittens said he

expected a better showing from his team than what he has seen to date.

“We were guilty of some basic mistakes in our play and had we limited them it would have helped our

game a lot.

“Overall, I am proud of the young players in the team for stepping up to this level and giving their all

while as a unit we can all take this as a learning experience as we move forward as a team.

Florian Combie, coach of St Lucia was quick to point out that he was very grateful for the victory which

kept his team in with a chance of reaching the final.

“But for me, my team is still looking for our game and we have to get it right for our final match of the

competition, whether it’s the final or the third place encounter,” ended Combie.

Belize (four points), entered the match with a chance to get to the final against Curacao in Sunday’s

afternoon session, but needed to beat the host in three straights sets to overhaul St Lucia’s nine points.

The tournament final will be contested between the top two teams at the end of the round-robin series

from 7pm on Sunday afternoon while the third placed encounter serves off two hours earlier, with the

winner still in with a chance of qualification to the third round.

However, it will only do so as the best third place finisher from all six groups of the second round

qualifiers.

Curacao Eases Past Belize, Sets up St Lucia Final Meeting

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: Host Curacao warmed up for the

finals of the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship

NORCECA second round Group J qualifiers against St Lucia

when they held off a spirited Belize in straight sets in the

final round-robin match of the four-team tournament at

the International School of Curacao Auditorium,

Willemstad on Sunday morning.

The straight sets win, 25-11, 25-19, 25-11, which was

accomplished in 63 minutes was the third from as many

matches in the series for 22nd ranked NORCECA ranked

Curacao to end with maximum 15 points , six ahead of 15th ranked Curacao, while 27th ranked Belize

was third with five and winless Antigua & Barbuda, 19th in NORCECA, fourth with one point.

USA-based Christine Anthony topscored for Curacao for the third straight outing with 13 points which

was highlighted by 11 kills while Lianne Jamanika and Geraldine Grigorius got ten each, and Sonela

Philips, eight .

For Belize, Shantell Arnold led with eight while Tichele Solis and Zaire Garbutt chipped in with five

apiece.

Prior to first serve Curacao had already qualified for the final after winning its first two matches while

Belize, ranked 27th in NORCECA needed to win in straight sets to pip Eastern Caribbean Volleyball

Association champions, St Lucia for a final spots.

However, it was not to be as the host raced into a 1-0 set lead before Belize using most of its younger

players in the second set showed more of a competitive edge, but still went under to miss out on a

chance at the gold medal and automatic qualification to the third round.

The tournament final will see Curacao and St Lucia battling for gold from 7pm on

Sunday afternoon while the third placed encounter, Belize against Antigua & Barbuda serves off two

hours earlier, with the winner still in with a chance of qualification to the third round.

However, it will only do so as the best third place finisher from all six groups of the second round

qualifiers.

Speaking after her team’s third loss from as many matches, Sherylee Young-Thornton n said her team

came out with the drive and passion to win against Curacao.

“But playing against the host country who won their first two matches we knew it was going to be

tough as they are a bigger, more athletic and experienced team than us, but we fought hard as we

could and had a good match.

With respect to the performance of the younger players on the team in the second and third

sets, Young-Thornton said the Belize team knows its capabilities and something when something is not

working with one group, there is enough confidence from the staff to give the other players the chance.’

Curacao captain, Maya Gomez was again satisfied with how her team dictated the match.

“The first set was very easy, but in the second set Belize showed more fight and as a team we were very

determined and did what was needed to get the victory.

Looking ahead to the final against St Lucia, which it swept in round-robin play 25-12, 25-22, 25-19,

Gomez said, “We need to stay consistent, pass and serve the way we can, play our game and execute

our game plan.”

Allan Sharp, coach of the losing Belize squad said he was very proud of the effort from his players.

“We started off slow, but in the second set we showed a lot of fire against a Curacao team which is

much bigger and technically sound than ours.

“We had a good serving game, but unluckily for us I think this was by far Curacao’s best game

defensively mainly due to the play of Chrsitine Anthony and Neysa Hooi who both did a great job passing

against our serves.”

Henri Delfina, coach of Curacao congratulated Belize for giving his team what he described as its

toughest test to date.

“We had two easy matches and today Belize showed a lot of courage and heart and I was glad because

going into the final we needed that kind of competitive match.”
